American Express Membership Rewards (India)

American Express Membership Rewards is the card loyalty programme through which American Express rewards Cardmembers for using its Cards; in India the company describes it as a programme in which points accumulate as the Card is used, can be redeemed for travel, shopping and entertainment rewards, and can also be transferred to airline frequent flyer programmes and hotel frequent guest programmes. [3] This profile covers only what the American Express India pages state about earning, transfer and redemption; it describes no account test, and it makes no claim about Membership Rewards programmes in other markets, which these sources do not cover. Key takeaways

  • Amex's India FAQ says a Cardmember earns Membership Rewards points simply by using the Card, that there is no limit to the points that can be earned, and that points never expire until the card is closed. [3]
  • Points can be transferred to a participating frequent flyer programme or frequent hotel guest programme, but the frequent flyer number must first be registered with American Express by telephone, with up to 14 days allowed for verification. [3]
  • The Membership Rewards catalogue is described as holding more than 500 redemption options, from travel and accommodation to electronics and luxury retail. [3]

Earning points

American Express India presents its personal Cards in premium, rewards and travel groups on its homepage, and points earning appears across that range rather than in a single group. [4] [7] The India card page names the American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card, the American Express Membership Rewards Credit Card and the American Express SmartEarn Credit Card as Cards on which Membership Rewards points are earned and redeemed, and each of them carries its own fee and bonus structure. [3]

SmartEarn multipliers. The SmartEarn Credit Card advertises 10X Membership Rewards points at Zomato, Ajio, Nykaa, BookMyShow, Uber and other merchants, and 5X points at Amazon, for every Rs. 50 spent. [3] Amex defines the 10X category as 9 points on every Rs. 50 at participating merchants over and above the regular earn rate, and the 5X category as 4 points on every Rs. 50 over and above it. [3] The page's worked example is a Rs. 250 eligible spend: 5 regular points plus 45 additional points under 10X, or 5 regular points plus 20 additional points under 5X. [3] The bonuses are capped per Card Account per month — 500 points in total for the 10X group of Flipkart, Uber, BookMyShow and other merchants combined, 500 points for Zomato under 10X, and 250 points for Amazon under 5X. [3]

Recurring and threshold bonuses. The Membership Rewards Credit Card offers 1,000 bonus points for using the Card four times on transactions of Rs. 1,500 and above in a month, plus an additional 1,000 points for spending INR 20,000 or more in a calendar month, the latter described as an enrolment-based benefit. [3] The Platinum Travel Credit Card offers 10,000 points on reaching a spend threshold of ₹4 lakhs, and a Taj Stay voucher worth ₹20,000 on reaching ₹7 lakhs in a Card Membership year. [3]

Welcome gifts and annual fees. Welcome gifts are quoted as 4,000 bonus points on the Membership Rewards Credit Card, 10,000 points on Platinum Travel and 11,000 bonus points on Platinum Reserve. [3] Each is available only in the first year, on payment of the annual fee, and against a minimum spend inside the first 90 days — INR 15,000 for the Membership Rewards Credit Card and Platinum Travel, and INR 30,000 for Platinum Reserve. [3] Annual fees on the same page are Rs. 495 in both the first and second year for SmartEarn, Rs. 1,000 in year one and Rs. 4,500 in year two for the Membership Rewards Credit Card, Rs. 5,000 in both years for Platinum Travel, and Rs. 10,000 in both years for Platinum Reserve, each plus applicable taxes. [3]

Transferring points

Amex states that Membership Rewards points can be transferred to a participating frequent flyer partner programme or frequent hotel guest programme. [3] The process starts on the Amex side: the Cardmember registers the frequent flyer number by calling the 24x7 Membership Services Helpline, may link accounts at any time, and faces no limit on the number of partners linked. [3] Amex asks Cardmembers to allow up to 14 days for the account to be verified, after which points are transferred to the frequent flyer account online. [3]

One stated exclusion applies to the whole transfer facility: it is not available to Cardmembers enrolled in the Non-Frequent Traveler option. [3]

Redeeming points

Redemption runs through the Cardmember's online account, and the India site lists several routes: redeeming points for e-vouchers, shopping with points, travelling with points, paying Card charges with points, and the Membership Rewards catalogue itself. [3] The catalogue is described as offering more than 500 hand-picked redemption options spanning travel and accommodation, electronics and luxury retail. [3] Points can also be spent as pay with points at checkout online or in store at participating merchants. [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • Card closure. The statement that points never expire is qualified by the words "until the card is closed", so closing the Card is the limit Amex states on the life of the points. [3]
  • Transfers. Cardmembers enrolled in the Non-Frequent Traveler option cannot use the points transfer service, and the frequent flyer number must be registered by telephone before any online transfer. [3]
  • Bonus caps. The SmartEarn 10X and 5X bonuses are capped per Card Account per month, calculated jointly across the merchants grouped in each category. [3]
  • Changing merchant lists. Amex warns that eligible merchant partners may change from time to time and points readers to a separate page for the complete list. [3]
  • Excluded spend. For the bonus and statement-credit offers, eligible spends exclude cash advances, express cash transactions, drafts made from the account, balance transfers and fees. [3]
