Hotel status qualification: nights, stays and spend are different

Hotel programmes do not use one shared status measure. A room night, a stay, base points and qualifying spend can count differently, even when they come from the same reservation.

Four different qualification systems

  • Marriott Bonvoy: status commonly advances through Elite Night Credits. Marriott states that one credit is earned for each qualifying night at a participating hotel on a qualifying rate. Qualifying points-redemption stays can count, subject to the property, rate and personal-stay rules; booking several rooms does not multiply one member’s nightly credit.
  • Hilton Honors: the 2026 route can use eligible nights, stays or spend. Hilton states that Base Points are no longer a standalone status-qualification path from 1 January 2026. Paid, reward and Points & Money stays have specific credit rules.
  • World of Hyatt: members qualify through Tier-Qualifying Nights or Base Points. The current terms allow eligible paid nights and specified Free Night Award nights to count. Ineligible rates, some group master-account nights and bonus points are treated differently.
  • IHG One Rewards: members qualify through Elite Qualifying Nights or Elite Qualifying Points. IHG says consumed Reward Nights count as qualifying nights. Only one night per day counts, even if a member books several rooms.

Keep separate ledgers

Redeemable points, Base Points, qualifying points, nights, stays and credit-card status credits are not interchangeable. A stay may award points without giving the status measure you expected, or award qualifying nights without room-rate points. Record each measure separately and read the current programme definition.

Check who and what the stay qualifies for

Before booking, verify the participating property, eligible rate, channel, member number, guest name, who pays, and which person actually stays. If several rooms are booked, ask how many nights can be credited to the member. A promotional night or card benefit may count toward some programme progress but not another offer’s requirements.

Match activity to the correct qualification year

Hotel programmes may use a calendar year, a membership year, or a rolling period. A checkout date can determine which year receives a night. Credit-card nights and partner credits may post later than the purchase or stay. Check the timing in the terms before planning a last-minute qualification.

A practical status plan

  1. Choose the hotel group and tier whose benefits fit trips you will take.
  2. Write down the current qualifying measure and the period that applies.
  3. Separate nights, stays, Base Points, qualifying points and partner credits in your tracker.
  4. Verify each reservation’s property, channel, rate and guest conditions.
  5. Value the benefits you expect to use against the price and restrictions of any extra stays.
