Points transfer checklist: what to confirm before you move a balance
A transfer can reduce your options, and a seat can disappear while points move. Confirm the award and the receiving programme’s rules before you submit.
1. Confirm the receiving programme
Check that the bank or hotel programme currently transfers to the airline or hotel account you plan to use. Read the destination programme’s terms as well as the source programme’s page. A partnership announcement does not establish the current ratio, eligibility or transfer method.
2. Find a use for the points
Search the intended trip on the programme that will receive the points. Confirm each flight or room, the passenger or guest, required balance, taxes and fees, and the cancellation conditions. A third-party result is a lead; confirm that the issuing programme can book it.
3. Check account and transfer details
Compare the names on both accounts, confirm the partner and transfer path, and read any minimum, increment or processing-time rule. Promotions may require registration before transferring. Keep the terms and confirmation number.
4. Treat the move as potentially irreversible
Marriott’s terms state that a completed conversion to airline miles cannot be reversed. Other programmes may have different rules, but do not assume points can be moved back. Award inventory can change while a transfer is pending, so have a backup date or fare.
5. Verify the balance before ticketing
After the transfer posts, confirm the balance in the receiving account and return to the official booking flow. If the award price or availability changed, compare the new option with cash rather than moving more points automatically.
