COURSE

Start here: American Express Membership Rewards in Singapore — earn, redeem, transfer and keep your points

Membership Rewards is the loyalty programme of American Express International Inc. in Singapore, with points earned on eligible Card spending and, in the Frequent Traveller Option, transferred to airline and hotel programmes [1]. This six-step course explains joining, earning, redeeming, transferring and keeping those points, and ends with one task to complete [1].

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • The Programme is American Express Membership Rewards, run by American Express International Inc.; its Frequent Traveller Option covers transfers to airline and hotel programmes and its Non-Frequent Traveller Option covers other rewards [1].
  • Personal Cards billed in Singapore dollars can enrol, except True Cashback Card Members on the cash back option and KrisFlyer Credit Card Members, and the account must be in good standing at the Enrolment Date [1].
  • Most Card Members earn two points per full S$1.60 on eligible purchases; Rewards Card Members earn one point per S$1 [1].
  • Points have no expiry date while minimum Credit Card payment or full Charge Card payment is received by the due date and the account is not overdue, though Amex may introduce an expiry date [1]; airline transfer rates with effect from 23 February 2026 are listed separately for The Platinum Card and for All Eligible Card [2].

What you will be able to do after this course

  • Check whether a personal Singapore-dollar American Express card can enrol and which option it is in.
  • Trace how a purchase earns points, and read an airline transfer rate for your card.
  • Spot the payment and cancellation events that put points at risk.

Step 1: What Membership Rewards in Singapore is and who it suits

You will learn: what the Programme covers, which cards and points it defines, and who it is for.

The Programme is the American Express Membership Rewards Programme, with “American Express” and “Amex” meaning American Express International Inc., its affiliates and licensees [1]. It includes Frequent Traveller Rewards, obtained by transferring points to participating airline frequent flyer or hotel frequent guest programmes, and Non-Frequent Traveller Rewards for shopping, dining, entertainment, financial services, travel and other rewards [1].

“Card” and “Card Account” cover the Basic Card and account for Centurion, Platinum Series, Gold and Personal Charge, Credit and Gold Business Cards billed in Singapore dollars; the Rewards Card is defined separately [1]. Points are not the Card Member’s property, are non-transferable and have no cash value [1].

Amex may change the terms at any time [1]. It can suspend or terminate the Programme when necessary, giving Basic Card Members advance written notice [1].

The course suits holders of personal American Express cards billed in Singapore dollars who can enrol, except True Cashback Card Members on the cash back option and KrisFlyer Credit Card Members [1].

Step 2: How you join: eligibility, options and fees

You will learn: who can enrol, which option to choose and what the fees are.

Participation is open to Card Members whose Card Accounts are billed in Singapore dollars, except True Cashback Card Members on the “cash back” option and KrisFlyer Credit Card Members [1]. The Card Account must be in good standing, not overdue or in collection, at the Enrolment Date, and Supplementary Cards cannot enrol separately [1].

Centurion, Platinum Charge, Platinum Reserve Credit and Platinum Credit cards are automatically enrolled in the Frequent Traveller Option with the fee waived while the card remains valid, in good standing and not cancelled [1]. Other eligible Card Members pay S$10.18 a year for the Non-Frequent Traveller Option or S$40.74 for the Frequent Traveller Option, except Centurion, Platinum Series and Rewards Card Members [1].

The fee is billed on the Enrolment Date and each Anniversary Date; it is non-refundable unless cancellation is requested no later than 30 days after the Anniversary Date, and enrolment is cancelled if it is not paid within 45 days after the date of the statement on which the fee is first billed [1]. The Frequent Traveller Option includes transfers to Frequent Customer Programmes; the Non-Frequent Traveller Option covers only Non-Frequent Traveller Rewards [1].

Go deeper: authorized user; card selection framework.

Step 3: How earning works

You will learn: the earn rates, which purchases do not earn and where points appear.

Most Card Members accrue two points for every full S$1.60 spent on eligible purchases charged and billed on the Card Account and any Linked Accounts, except Centurion Card Members, Corporate Card Members, Rewards Card Members and Cards with certain professional associations [1]. Rewards Card Members accrue one point for every S$1 spent on eligible purchases charged and billed on the Card Account [1].

Non-eligible purchases do not earn, and the terms point to go.amex/sgexclusions for a non-exhaustive list that can change [1]. Points appear in the monthly Card statement of the Primary Account [1]. The earn rate is not changing with the 2026 airline transfer-rate change [2].

Go deeper: earning rate; eligible card spend; KrisFlyer card earning.

Step 4: How to use points: rewards and airline transfers

You will learn: how to redeem rewards, how airline transfers work and what changes on 23 February 2026.

Points may be converted or redeemed only if all enrolled Linked Accounts are in good standing at the time of the request, including a transfer request, and only the Basic Card Member can redeem [1]. A fee of 800 points may be deducted at Amex’s discretion for each redemption or conversion requested through the customer service hotline; no fee applies online or through other means [1]. Points may be bought up to 20,000 per redemption, in multiples of 1,000, only with a reward redemption [1].

For Frequent Traveller Rewards, the Card Member must join the airline or hotel programme first, must transfer only to the Basic Card Member’s own account there, and should note that conversion rates, minimum transfers and increments vary by programme [1]. Rewards Card Members pay a transfer fee per conversion to a Frequent Customer Programme [1]. Travel Accident Insurance does not apply to frequent flyer tickets obtained using converted points, except programmes expressly offering that coverage where the Card Member has enrolled and paid [1].

With effect from 23 February 2026, the rate for The Platinum Card is 500 points = 250 miles for British Airways, Cathay, EVA Air, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas Airways, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways, and 600 points = 250 miles for Emirates [2]. The rate for All Eligible Card is 550 points = 250 miles for the same seven airlines, and 650 points = 250 miles for Emirates [2].

Rates for Pay with Points, eVouchers, Amex Collectibles, Points for Fee and other transfer partners remain unchanged [2]. For personal cards, an Eligible Card is issued in Singapore by American Express International Inc. and enrolled in the Programme, excluding True Cashback Card Members on the cash back option, KrisFlyer Credit Card Members and Amex cards issued by DBS and UOB [2]. For The Centurion Card, the page directs Card Members to log in to their Amex Account for more details [2].

Go deeper: transfer ratio; transfer partner; transfer points checklist; Start here: KrisFlyer.

Step 5: Keeping your points: no expiry, payments and cancellation

You will learn: what keeps points alive and what can forfeit them.

The terms describe no status tiers for the Programme [1]. Points have no expiry date for either option while Amex receives the minimum payment for Credit Cards or full payment for Charge Cards by the statement due date and the Card Account is not overdue, but Amex reserves the right to institute an expiry date [1].

If an enrollee cancels enrolment, points not redeemed or transferred can be carried over for up to 30 days after cancellation and are forfeited after that [1]. Moving from the Non-Frequent Traveller Option to the Frequent Traveller Option carries a transfer fee unless all points are redeemed first [1].

If the Card Account or any Linked Account is not in good standing, enrolment may be cancelled or points forfeited [1]. Cancelling all Cards, or Amex cancelling any Linked Accounts, may suspend points, which are forfeited even if accounts are later reinstated [1]. With another valid, good-standing American Express Card account, the Card Member may continue and pay the prevailing enrolment fee on that account; otherwise the Programme Account is terminated and points are forfeited [1]. Fraud or abuse may result in forfeiture and cancellation of the Programme Account [1].

Go deeper: card points expiry; transferable points when closing a card.

Step 6: Your first concrete action

You will learn: the checks to complete before your first redemption or transfer.

  1. Open the Membership Rewards Terms and Conditions for Personal Cards and check whether your card is eligible and which option you are in [1].
  2. Pay at least the minimum amount for a Credit Card, or the full amount for a Charge Card, by the statement due date, because this condition keeps points from expiring [1].
  3. Before a transfer, confirm you are in the Frequent Traveller Option, that the partner account is in the Basic Card Member’s name, and the current rate for your card on the Amex rate-change page [1] [2].
  4. Redeem or convert online rather than by hotline, because the 800-point fee may be deducted for hotline requests but not for online requests [1].
  5. Redeem or transfer before cancelling enrolment or your last card, because unredeemed points are forfeited after the stated periods [1].

Next: use the transfer points checklist to plan a conversion, then start the KrisFlyer course if Singapore Airlines is your first target and return to the programme hub for every guide on this programme.
