Award availability: what “award space” means
Award availability means that a loyalty programme offers the flight and cabin you want in exchange for points or miles when you search. It is often called award space. Availability, the points price and the cash payment are separate questions.
Three things to check
| Question | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Can I book it? | An award result for your intended trip, cabin and travelling party. |
| How many points? | The programme’s quote for that result, not a price remembered from another date. |
| How much cash? | Taxes, fees and any applicable carrier-imposed surcharge. |
An available award can still require more miles than you want to spend. American’s terms allow AAdvantage awards on available American and American Eagle seats, potentially at higher mileage prices; awards on partner airlines can have separate seating restrictions. [1]
The programme matters
A cash fare on the operating airline’s website does not, by itself, establish that your chosen loyalty programme can book that flight as an award. Search through the programme whose points you intend to use.
Some programmes offer broad access to their own flights. Aeroplan, for example, advertises access to every seat on Air Canada flights and also offers partner-flight rewards. The Air Canada statement should not be extended to every partner flight or interpreted as a promise of a particular points price. [3]
How to check for yourself
- Search on the programme’s official website or app and choose the points-or-miles option (at American, ‘Redeem miles’). American’s instructions distinguish this from its separate cash-and-miles booking option. [2]
- Search the trip you actually need. Check the dates, passengers, flight details and cabin before comparing results.
- Inspect partner options. American includes many partner flights in its award results and provides airline filters. [2]
- Review the points total, cash charges and booking conditions. Keep the issued-ticket confirmation; a saved search is not a ticket. American’s terms, for example, say a flight award may be withdrawn, need more miles or gain new restrictions at any time before ticketing. [1]
Flight awards, upgrades and seat selection are different transactions
Paying miles to choose a seat on an existing ticket is one transaction. Requesting an upgrade is another. Neither is the same as booking a flight award. American lists reserving seats with miles and Instant Upgrade with miles as separate uses of miles, each with its own instructions. Check the instructions for the transaction you want. [2]
