FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a minimum transfer?

Minimum transfer is the smallest number of points that a loyalty programme will move in one transfer from a credit-card or hotel currency into a partner airline or hotel programme. It matters because points below that floor cannot be sent on their own, so a small balance may stay stranded until enough points are collected, and because transferred points may not be reversible. In the examples below, the floor applies per transfer or per day: American Express Membership Rewards in the United States generally requires at least 1,000 points and transfers in multiples of 1,000 [2], while Marriott Bonvoy lists a daily range of 3,000 to 240,000 points for airline transfers as of 18 October 2026 [4].

Key takeaways

  • A minimum transfer is a floor set by the programme that holds the points; it is separate from the transfer ratio and from any bonus threshold. [2] [4]
  • American Express Membership Rewards in the United States generally requires at least 1,000 points per transfer, in multiples of 1,000. [2]
  • Marriott Bonvoy lists a daily transfer range of 3,000 to 240,000 points for airline partners. [4]
  • Transfers are final at American Express once made, so the minimum also sets the smallest amount a member can move in one irreversible step. [2] [5]

How does a minimum transfer work?

Transferable points sit in a flexible currency, such as a bank rewards programme or a hotel loyalty programme, and can be moved to partner airlines or hotels. [2] [4] The minimum transfer is the smallest number of those points the programme will send in one transaction. It can be paired with an increment: after the floor is met, the transfer may have to be made in set blocks.

American Express Membership Rewards states that, in most cases, a member must transfer a minimum of 1,000 points and only in multiples of 1,000 points. [2] That rule appears in the US terms last updated in October 2026. [2] The member must also link the Rewards Account to the partner loyalty programme account before transferring. [2]

Marriott Bonvoy’s points-to-miles page gives a different shape: members can transfer 3,000 to 240,000 points per day to airline partners. [4] Marriott also says transfers to most programmes run at a 3-to-1 ratio, with 38 airlines participating as of 18 October 2026. [4] The daily range controls how many points can move; the ratio controls how many partner miles those points become. [4]

Published minimum-transfer rules
ProgrammePublished minimumIncrement or daily range
American Express Membership Rewards (United States)1,000 points in most cases [2]Multiples of 1,000 points [2]
Marriott Bonvoy3,000 points per day [4]Up to 240,000 points per day [4]

Each figure applies only to the programme named; the American Express minimum and the Marriott Bonvoy daily range are separate rules, not one combined rule. [2] [4]

Why can small balances be unusable?

A balance below the published floor does not meet the programme’s stated minimum for a transfer. At American Express, the terms say the minimum is 1,000 points in most cases, so a smaller Membership Rewards balance is below that published threshold. [2] At Marriott, the daily range starts at 3,000 points, so a smaller balance is outside the published daily range for airline transfers. [4]

Transfers are not reversible at American Express. The terms say that once points are transferred, the transfer cannot be reversed and the partner programme’s terms apply. [2] The customer help page repeats that all points transfers are final. [5] A member cannot use a small transfer as a trial and then move the points back if the award does not appear. [2] [5]

Marriott Bonvoy adds a separate reason to watch the balance. Members must have Qualifying Activity at least once every 24 months to retain accumulated points, and converting points with designated partners counts as Qualifying Activity. [6] A balance below 3,000 points falls outside Marriott’s published daily transfer range [4], so a member in that position may need a different Qualifying Activity to keep the points active under the 24-month rule. [6] This is a Marriott Bonvoy rule, not a general rule for every hotel programme. [6]

What else affects a points transfer?

Account linking and name matching. American Express requires the partner loyalty programme account to be linked to the Rewards Account before a transfer. [2] The partner account must be in the member’s name or the name of an Additional Card Member, and an Additional Card must have been issued at least 90 days before linking. [2] [5] Marriott says that for most airline partners, the member name on the frequent flyer account must match the Marriott Bonvoy first and last name. [4]

Processing time. American Express says a transfer typically takes 48 hours to process, but some programmes delay posting points to the partner account. [2] Meeting the minimum does not mean the points appear instantly. [2]

Fees and caps. American Express charges an excise tax offset fee for points transferred to a U.S. airline frequent flyer programme. [2] If an airline loyalty programme stops participating in Membership Rewards, American Express may limit the number of points a member can transfer before participation ends, and that limit will be at least 100,000 points. [2] These rules apply to Membership Rewards transfers. [2]

Bonuses above the minimum. Marriott Bonvoy offers 5,000 bonus miles for every 60,000 points transferred to frequent flyer miles, with 10,000 bonus miles for every 60,000 points transferred to United MileagePlus. [4] The bonus does not apply to American Airlines AAdvantage, Avianca LifeMiles or Delta SkyMiles. [4] The 60,000-point bonus level is separate from the 3,000-point daily minimum and changes the reward for a larger transfer. [4]

Exceptions and limits

  • American Express states the 1,000-point minimum applies in most cases. [2]
  • If the only Card Product linked to a Membership Rewards account is a Legacy Card, the transfer option is not available. [2]
  • A Rewards Checking or Business Checking account can transfer to a limited selection of partner loyalty programmes, and the name on the partner account must match the name on the checking account. [2]
  • Marriott’s published daily range ends at 240,000 points. [4]
  • Once points move, the partner programme’s terms govern them. [2] [5] Marriott also says the terms of the applicable airline frequent flyer programme control the redemption, transfer and distribution of miles. [6]

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum transfer for American Express Membership Rewards?

In most cases, American Express requires a minimum of 1,000 points per transfer, and transfers must be in multiples of 1,000 points. [2] The rule appears in the US Membership Rewards terms last updated in October 2026. [2]

What is the minimum transfer from Marriott Bonvoy to airlines?

Marriott Bonvoy lists a daily transfer range of 3,000 to 240,000 points for airline partners. [4] That makes 3,000 points the published daily minimum on that page as of 18 October 2026. [4]

Can I transfer fewer points than the published minimum?

The published minimum is the smallest amount the programme lists for a transfer or daily transfer range. [2] [4] A balance below it does not meet the stated floor, so it cannot be sent under that rule. [2] [4]

Why does the name on my account matter for a transfer?

American Express requires the partner loyalty programme account to be in the member’s name or an Additional Card Member’s name, with the Additional Card issued at least 90 days before linking. [2] [5] Marriott says most airline partners require the frequent flyer account name to match the Marriott Bonvoy first and last name. [4]

Are transferred points reversible?

At American Express, no. The terms say a transfer cannot be reversed and that the partner programme’s terms then apply. [2] The customer help page also says all points transfers are final. [5]
