PROGRAMME PROFILE

American Express Membership Rewards (Australia)

American Express Membership Rewards is American Express's own card rewards programme, in which points held in a Rewards Account can be moved to participating airline and hotel loyalty programmes once the two accounts have been linked. [4] [5]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • Membership Rewards points can be transferred to participating airline and hotel loyalty programmes, but only after the Rewards Account has been linked to the partner programme account. [4] [5]
  • The partner account must be held by the member or by an Additional Card Member on the card account, and an Additional Card must have been issued at least 90 days before linking. [4] [5]
  • Transfers run one way: points moved out cannot be converted back to Membership Rewards, and the partner programme's terms then govern them. [4] [5]

How a transfer works

Under the Membership Rewards terms, a member may be able to transfer points to participating partner loyalty programmes, such as those offered by airlines and hotels. [4] The Rewards Account must be linked with the partner loyalty programme account before any transfer can be made. [4] To link them, the partner account must be in the member's name or in the name of an Additional Card Member on the card account. [4] The American Express FAQ states the same requirement in plainer terms: the name on the card and the name on the partner loyalty account must match for the accounts to be linked and the transfer to succeed. [5]

Once the accounts are linked, the member chooses how many points to move. In most cases the minimum transfer is 1,000 points, made in multiples of 1,000. [4] Processing typically takes 48 hours, though individual partner programmes may delay posting points to the member's account, and American Express advises checking the partner account before booking. [4] The rate at which points convert varies by partner, and American Express points members to its points-information page for the current rates rather than listing them in the terms. [4]

Transfers are final. American Express states that points transferred to a partner account cannot be converted back into Membership Rewards points, that transfers cannot be reversed, and that the partner programme's terms and conditions apply once the points arrive. [4] [5] The FAQ adds the practical consequence: because the airline or hotel is responsible for the booking, a member should confirm award availability and the points required before completing a transfer. [5]

What is established for Australia, and what is not

The programme itself is listed by American Express among its rewards offerings, with terms applying to Membership features. [3] Membership Rewards transfer partners are described as "participating" programmes and the transfer rate as varying by partner, which means any list of airlines and hotels has to be read from the programme's own current documentation rather than assumed. [4]

Transfer availability also depends on the card product held, which the terms show through a specific exclusion: where the only card linked to the Rewards Account is a Legacy Card, the transfer option is not available at all. [4] Because rates and partner lists are set per market and can change, members should check the current terms for their own card before planning a transfer. [4]

Exceptions and limits

  • Fees tied to one market. The United States terms impose an excise tax offset fee of $0.0006 per point, capped at $99, on points transferred to a U.S. airline frequent flyer programme; the terms describe this as offsetting a federal excise tax American Express must pay on the transfer. [4]
  • Partner programmes leaving. If an airline loyalty programme stops participating, American Express may cap how many points can be transferred to it before participation ends, and says any such cap will be at least 100,000 points. [4]
  • Additional Card timing. An Additional Card must have been issued at least 90 days before the member links the Rewards Account to that Additional Card Member's partner account; additional terms may apply to partner transfers. [4]
  • Checking accounts only. Where a member has no card account linked to the Rewards Account and only a checking account, use of points is limited to redeeming for deposits and transferring to a limited selection of partner programmes. [4]
  • No card-charge protections on award flights. A flight booked with frequent flyer miles is not charged to the card account, so insurance and other benefits that apply when a flight is charged to the card do not apply. [4]
