How to combine Amex Membership Rewards points

Membership Rewards is the American Express points programme in the United States, and it pools points at the level of a Rewards Account rather than a single card: where a member holds more than one enrolled product, American Express may link them to the same Rewards Account automatically, so the points sit in one balance. [4] Additional Card Members on consumer and business accounts do not get a Rewards Account of their own, and points cannot be moved into someone else's Rewards Account. [4]

Key takeaways

  • American Express may automatically link several enrolled products to one Rewards Account, so points earned on different cards can sit in a single balance. [4]
  • Linking is not fixed at enrolment: a member can ask for products to be linked to, or delinked from, the same Rewards Account by calling the number on the back of the card. [4]
  • Additional Card Members on consumer and business card accounts do not have their own Rewards Accounts. [4]
  • Corporate Cards issued to more than one individual may not be linked to a single Rewards Account. [4]
  • Points cannot be transferred into someone else's Rewards Account, sold, or passed on through a divorce, an inheritance or a bankruptcy. [4]

When do points from different Amex cards combine?

The rules described here are the ones published for the United States Membership Rewards programme, in terms last updated in October 2026. [4]

A Rewards Account exists because at least one eligible, enrolled product is attached to it. [4] Where a member holds several products, American Express says it may link them to the same Rewards Account automatically, and adds that the ways points can be used may differ depending on the product and on which products are linked. [4]

A member who would rather have products linked to, or delinked from, the same Rewards Account can call the number on the back of the card to arrange it. [4]

One shared balance does not mean identical options for every card in it. If the only product linked to a Rewards Account is a Legacy Card, the redemption options available are limited, and transferring points to partner airline and hotel programmes is not one of them; Pay with Points is then usable only through American Express Travel, and gift card redemptions are restricted to American Express Gift Cards. [4] Transfer times and minimums for partner transfers are set out in the dedicated transfer guide.

Do additional card members get their own points?

Additional Card Members on consumer card accounts and business card accounts do not have their own Rewards Accounts; the account belongs to the Basic Card Member, who is the primary Card Account holder. [4]

Because the balance belongs to that one Rewards Account, the programme terms describe points as something other than personal property: points cannot be transferred into someone else's Rewards Account, cannot be sold, and cannot be passed on as part of a legal action such as a divorce, an inheritance or a bankruptcy. [4] The authorized user entry explains where a second cardholder does and does not change the picture.

How do business and corporate accounts fit in?

Business Card Accounts follow the same pattern: Additional Business Card Members are the people whose cards are tied to the business's Card Account, and they do not have their own Rewards Accounts. [4]

There is one explicit limit on combining corporate plastic. Corporate Cards issued to more than one individual may not be linked to a single Rewards Account. [4] Business and Corporate customers may use points for personal or business reasons, but they cannot be directed or required to use them for business, and it is treated as fraudulent or abusive for Corporate Card Members to use one Card Account or Rewards Account to accumulate points for company use. [4]

Deposit accounts pool in a similar way to cards. On a Rewards Checking account, a second named owner earns points in the same manner as the first named owner, but all points accrue into the first named owner's Rewards Account, and only the first named owner can redeem. [4] On a Business Checking account, an Admin user's eligible Business Debit Card purchases are credited to the account owner's Rewards Account, and only the account owner can redeem. [4]

Which products share the Rewards Account also changes the deposit rate on those points. [4]

Business Checking with a linked Business Platinum Card1,000 points for a deposit for the first 1,000,000 points per calendar year, then 1,000 points for an $8 deposit [4]

Exceptions and limits

  • Only a deposit account linked. If no Card Account is linked to the Rewards Account and only a Checking Account is, use of points is limited to Redeem for Deposits or to transferring points to a limited selection of participating partner loyalty programmes. [4]
  • Restricted or past-due accounts. Generally a member cannot use points, and American Express may cancel the Rewards Account, if a product is in restricted status, cancelled or past due, or if a returned payment is outstanding; New York Card Members can keep using points in these scenarios for 90 days by calling the number on the back of the card. [4]
  • Cancelling a product. What happens to the balance depends on whether another product stays linked: cancelling or unenrolling the last linked product means losing all points immediately, except that where the last linked product is a Corporate Card the member may be able to redeem points for up to 30 days. [4] The card cancellation entry covers the wider consequences.
  • Cancellation by American Express. If American Express cancels any product for any reason, including death, insolvency or bankruptcy, all points in the Rewards Account are lost; the executor or personal representative may be able to make a one-time redemption depending on the product, a cancellation for inactivity gives 90 days to use the points, and points are not lost where a product is cancelled by accident. [4]
  • Suspended corporate charges. Where a Corporate Card is the only card linked to the Rewards Account and the ability to charge is suspended, the ability to use points is suspended too, until charging resumes. [4]

Frequently asked questions

Do all my Amex cards earn into one Membership Rewards balance?

American Express may automatically link multiple enrolled products to the same Rewards Account, and a member can also ask for products to be linked or delinked by calling the number on the back of the card. [4]

Can I send my Amex points to my partner's airline account?

The partner loyalty programme account must be in the member's name or in the name of an Additional Card Member on the Card Account, whose additional card must have been issued at least 90 days before the link. [4] American Express's help page puts it as a name-match rule between the card and the loyalty account. [5]

Does an additional card member have a separate points balance?

No. Additional Card Members on consumer and business card accounts do not have their own Rewards Accounts. [4]

What happens to pooled points if I close one of two cards?

Points are lost immediately only if the cancelled or unenrolled product was the last one linked to the Rewards Account; if a Corporate Card was the last linked product, redemption may remain possible for up to 30 days. [4]
