How do you earn Membership Rewards points?
The card earns 5X Membership Rewards points on flights and prepaid hotels booked on AmexTravel.com, including bookings through Fine Hotels + Resorts® and The Hotel Collection®. [1] It earns 2X points for each dollar spent at US construction material and hardware suppliers, electronic goods retailers and software and cloud system providers, and shipping providers. [1] The same 2X rate applies to each eligible purchase of $5,000 or more. [1] The 2X rate applies to up to $2 million of these purchases per calendar year, and when a purchase qualifies for more than one additional point bonus, only the highest bonus applies. [1] Other eligible purchases earn 1X. [1]
Card Members can get 35% of points back after using Pay with Points for flights booked through American Express Travel with a selected qualifying airline, up to 1,000,000 points back per calendar year. [1] Membership Rewards points can also be transferred to participating airline and hotel loyalty programmes after the Rewards Account is linked to the partner account. [4] [5] The partner account must be in the name of the Card Member or an Additional Card Member, and an Additional Card must have been issued at least 90 days before the partner account is linked. [4] [5]
Transfers are final and cannot be reversed, and the partner programme's terms then apply. [4] In most cases the minimum transfer is 1,000 points, in multiples of 1,000, and processing usually takes 48 hours. [4] A transfer to a US airline frequent flyer programme carries an excise tax offset fee. [4]

How do employee cards and protections work?
Employee Cards can be set to send real-time Merchant Category Alerts when employees spend outside approved merchant types, and a no-annual-fee option is available. [1] An Account Manager can be assigned to make payments, review transactions and add Employee Cards. [1] Additional Card Members on business card accounts do not have their own Rewards Accounts. [4]
Travel protections include Trip Delay Insurance for a round trip paid entirely with an eligible card when a covered reason delays the trip by more than six hours, up to $500 per trip and two claims per card in 12 consecutive months. [1] Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance can reimburse up to $10,000 per trip and up to $20,000 per card in 12 consecutive months. [1]
Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance applies when the entire rental is reserved and paid with the eligible card and the collision damage waiver is declined; it provides secondary coverage and is not available for rentals in Australia, Italy and New Zealand. [1] Cell Phone Protection can reimburse up to $800 per claim, with a limit of two approved claims in 12 months and a $50 deductible, when the phone line is on a wireless bill paid by an eligible card. [1]
Exceptions and limits
- Statement credits follow different clocks: the hotel credit is semi-annual, the Delta Sky Club visits run from February to January, and most other credits are per calendar year. [1]
- The hotel credit applies only to prepaid bookings through American Express Travel, and The Hotel Collection requires at least two nights. [1] Hilton gift-card purchases are excluded from the Hilton credit. [1]
- American Express relies on airlines to identify incidental fee purchases, and says to call the number on the card if a qualifying credit has not appeared after eight weeks. [1] The list of qualifying airlines can change. [1]
- Lounge access is subject to visit limitations, and unlimited Delta Sky Club access depends on meeting the $75,000 calendar-year spend threshold. [1]
- Membership Rewards points are not the Card Member's property, cannot be sold or transferred to another person's Rewards Account, and may be lost if the last linked product is cancelled or unenrolled. [4] Transferred points cannot be converted back to Membership Rewards points. [4]
