FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a card points statement credit?
Card points statement credit is a redemption option in which a cardholder converts earned points, miles or cash back into a credit posted to the credit-card account, so the amount owed falls instead of the rewards being spent on a flight, hotel stay or voucher. Whether the option exists at all is set by the individual card: in HSBC's card programme in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, RewardCash can be redeemed to offset purchase transactions, or turned into miles, cash vouchers or gifts instead. Key takeaways
- A statement credit is one route out of a reward balance, not a universal one: HSBC lists RewardCash redemptions against purchase transactions alongside miles, cash vouchers and gifts. [12]
- Rewards quoted in dollars are not always cash: WestJet's Status Lift converts card spend into tier qualifying spend, which has no monetary or other exchange value and cannot be sold or transferred. [4]
- Minimums and exclusions decide whether a small balance converts at all — the BJ's One and BJ's One+ Mastercards require a minimum balance of $10 in rewards to redeem. [8]
How does a card points statement credit work?
A statement credit is a negative entry on a card statement: the issuer applies part of the cardholder's reward balance against the amount due, and the balance falls by that amount. Because the credit settles a debt rather than buying a product, its practical value depends on three things — the conversion rate the issuer sets between points and currency, any minimum balance or minimum redemption amount, and the transactions the credit can be applied to. That is why the same reward balance behaves very differently from one card to another, and why a statement credit is usually weighed against miles, vouchers and travel credits rather than against cash in hand.
In HSBC's card programme in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China the reward currency is RewardCash, earned as a rebate on spending. The HSBC Red Credit Card advertises up to 8% RewardCash rebate at designated merchants and up to 4% when spending online, and the HSBC Visa Signature Card advertises up to 3.6% RewardCash rebate in designated spending categories. [12] HSBC says RewardCash can be redeemed “to offset purchase transactions, redeem miles, cash vouchers, gifts and more”, which makes the cash-like credit one of several routes out of the same balance. [12] The programme also lists instant RewardCash redemption at merchants, a route used at the point of sale rather than on the statement. [12]
Cash-back cards often park rewards in a separate rewards account before they are applied anywhere. Discover says cash back is added to the rewards account within two billing periods, and that the Discover it Cash Back card earns 5% cash back at different places each quarter, up to the quarterly maximum when activated, plus 1% on other purchases. [10]
What value do points have as a statement credit?
There is no shared conversion rate across cards: each programme publishes its own earn rates and its own redemption menu, so a figure quoted for one card says nothing about another. Published rates for the cards described on this page, as of 18 October 2026, are:
| Card | Published rate | Reward type |
|---|---|---|
| HSBC Red Credit Card | Up to 8% RewardCash rebate at designated merchants and up to 4% online [12] | RewardCash, a cash-denominated rebate |
| HSBC Visa Signature Card | Up to 3.6% RewardCash rebate in designated spending categories [12] | RewardCash |
| HSBC EveryMile Credit Card | Miles at a rate as low as HKD2 = 1 mile [12] | Miles |
| Discover it Cash Back | 5% cash back in quarterly categories up to the maximum when activated, plus 1% elsewhere [10] | Cash back |
| Discover it Miles | 1.5x miles on every dollar of every purchase [10] | Miles |
| BJ's One / BJ's One+ Mastercard | 3% / 5% back in rewards at BJ's, and 1.5% / 2% elsewhere [8] | Rewards redeemable at BJ's |
| Capital One Venture X Rewards | 2X miles on every purchase, plus 10,000 anniversary miles [8] | Miles |
The distinction matters when a cardholder chooses a statement credit over miles. Cash-denominated rewards are already counted in currency, and HSBC explicitly lists offsetting purchase transactions among the ways to use RewardCash. [12] Mile-denominated rewards are described in miles, and where an issuer states a currency equivalent it is tied to a stated use: Capital One describes the annual 10,000 bonus miles on Venture X Business as equal to $100 toward travel. [8] Some welcome offers are quoted as a straight either-or between the two — HSBC's EveryMile Credit Card offer is written as up to $1,450 RewardCash or 29,000 miles. [12]
Which minimums and exclusions apply to card rewards?
- Minimum balance. On the BJ's One Credit Card and BJ's One+ Credit Card there is no cap on how much can be earned and rewards last for the life of the account, but a cardholder must hold a minimum balance of $10 in rewards to redeem, and the minimum eligible purchase amount is $10 at BJ's checkout. [8] Eye exams and online optical purchases are not eligible for reward redemption. [8]
- What a first-year match covers. Discover's Cashback Match covers all cash back earned from account approval through the first 365 days, is added to the rewards account within two billing periods, carries no purchase minimum and is for new cardmembers only. [10] It does not match statement credits, rewards processed after the match period ends, rewards transferred from deposit accounts, or rewards on accounts that are closed. [10]
- Spend that does not count. For WestJet's Status Lift, eligible purchases are net purchase transactions on the card's monthly statements, minus returns, other credits, fees, interest charges and cash advances such as balance transfers, cash-like transactions and bill payments that are not pre-authorised merchant charges. [4]
What looks like a statement credit but is not
Travel credit is spent inside a booking channel. The Capital One Venture X Rewards card carries a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit that is applied at checkout in Capital One Travel, expires on the next account anniversary, earns no rewards, and is restored after a cancellation only if it has not expired; the account must be open and in good standing to receive or use it. [8] The Venture card's one-time $300 Capital One Travel Stays credit works the same way and expires one year after account opening. [8]
Status progress can be quoted in dollars without being money. WestJet's Status Lift gives primary cardholders on the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard the equivalent of CAD 200 in tier qualifying spend for every CAD 5,000 in eligible purchases during a qualifying year, up to 50 lifts a year, which is equivalent to CAD 10,000 in tier qualifying spend. [4] That tier qualifying spend has no monetary or other exchange value and cannot be sold or transferred. [4] A Status Lift is awarded about ten business days after the monthly statement date on which the CAD 5,000 is reached, and WestJet reserves the right to remove lifts if the card account is closed before the end of the qualifying year. [4]
Availability depends on the card. HSBC's cards in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China publish a RewardCash menu that includes offsetting purchase transactions, while the WestJet benefit turns card spend into tier progress with no cash value, so whether a statement-credit route exists has to be checked against the terms of the card in hand rather than assumed across a wallet. [12] [4] For the wider set of ways to spend a balance, see card points redemption options.
Frequently asked questions
Can you turn credit card points into a statement credit?
Only where the card's own terms allow it. RewardCash from HSBC in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China can be used to offset purchase transactions, or converted into miles, cash vouchers or gifts. [12]
Is a statement credit the same as a travel credit?
No. A travel credit is spent inside a booking channel: Capital One's $300 annual Capital One Travel credit on Venture X Rewards is applied at checkout in Capital One Travel, expires on the account anniversary and earns no rewards. [8]
Do you need a minimum rewards balance to redeem?
It depends on the card. The BJ's One and BJ's One+ Mastercards require a minimum balance of $10 in rewards to redeem, and eye exams and online optical purchases are not eligible for reward redemption. [8]
Does a first-year cash-back match apply to statement credits?
Discover's Cashback Match does not match statement credits, rewards processed after the match period ends, or rewards on closed accounts; the match covers cash back earned from approval through the first 365 days. [10]
