How to compare car rental booking channels

Car rental booking channels are the different routes a traveller can use to reserve a vehicle — the rental company's own website or app, a business or agency account, or a loyalty-linked entry point — and the route decides which pages hold the reservation tools, where payment questions are answered, and who a renter contacts for support. [4] [8] The two company sites checked here publish their own reservation tools and help centres, but neither publishes terms for a reservation made through an airline portal or an online travel agency. Key takeaways

  • On a direct booking, the company publishes the reservation, change and location tools itself: Enterprise lists Start a Reservation, View/Modify/Cancel Reservation and Find a Location in one menu. [4]
  • SIXT's help centre answers questions by stage of the rental — before you book, pricing and payments, booking and changes, pick-up, during the rental, return, billing — and offers live chat, WhatsApp and phone contact. [8]

Booking direct with the rental company

Enterprise's own site invites travellers to book with thousands of airport and city locations, and places Start a Reservation, View/Modify/Cancel Reservation and Find a Location in the same reservation menu. [4] Payment and receipt pages sit in that same structure: Payment Options and Get a Receipt are listed next to the booking and change tools, and the site also links a page for all deals and coupons. [4] The company also offers an iOS and Android app for managing reservations on the go. [4]

A direct booking is also where market differences become visible. Enterprise's United States site lets a visitor choose USD, CAD or EUR and English or Español, and it links separate websites for Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Spain and the United Kingdom. [4] What appears in the menu, and which currency is displayed, therefore depends on which of those sites you are using. [4]

SIXT organises its published answers by stage rather than by seller: Before You Book; Pricing, conditions and payments; Booking & Changes; Picking Up Your Car; During Your Rental; Returning Your Car; Billing & Payments; Your Account & Rewards; Damages, Accidents & Breakdowns; and Our Fleet. [8] Within that structure, change and extension questions sit under Booking & Changes, and deposits, invoices and fines sit under Billing & Payments. [8] SIXT lists live chat, WhatsApp and a phone line as ways to reach its support team. [8]

Business, agency and public-sector routes

Enterprise groups business renting under Business Rentals, where it says its customised rental programmes are designed to meet a company's needs, and it lists an Enterprise Business Rental Program alongside Public Sector and a mileage reimbursement calculator under its business solutions. [4] SIXT's site lists SIXT for business, Register my business, business car rental, business car alternatives and a Travel agencies page. [8] Both companies therefore publish an entry point for customers who do not book as individuals. [4] [8]

Loyalty and partner routes

Enterprise Plus is presented as a way to earn points toward free rental days, and the site states that this covers base rate, time and mileage only. [4] The same site carries links labelled Partner Rewards Programs and Affiliate Programs in its footer, so partner routes exist in the site's navigation. [4] SIXT lists SIXT ONE among its programs and keeps an Account & Rewards help topic covering profiles, SIXT ONE and data privacy. [8]

Airline portals, agencies and brokers

Neither company's pages, as checked, name airline portals, online travel agencies, brokers or metasearch sites as a way to book a car, and neither publishes payment, cancellation or support terms for a reservation created through one. [4] [8] A guide that promised such terms would be going beyond what these sources say.

What the sources do show is the shape of each company's own support. SIXT answers questions by rental stage and offers chat, WhatsApp and phone contact [8]; Enterprise offers Help & FAQs and Contact Us alongside its reservation tools [4].

Exceptions and limits

  • Market. Enterprise publishes separate sites for Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Spain and the United Kingdom, so the menus and deals described here describe the United States site. [4]
  • Currency.
  • Payment and cancellation rules. Neither source publishes cancellation windows, no-show charges, deposit amounts or rules separating prepaid from pay-at-counter rates. [4] [8]
  • Loyalty limits. Enterprise Plus points cover base rate, time and mileage only, so charges outside those elements are not covered by the points described. [4]
  • Other companies. Only Enterprise Rent-A-Car and SIXT are covered here; no other rental company's channel rules are described. [4] [8]
