What is airline elite status?

Elite status is a tier in a loyalty programme that can provide extra benefits after a member meets that programme’s qualification rules.

Also calledAirline status, elite tierScopeProgramme-specific

What it means

An airline loyalty programme may group members into tiers. A member who meets the programme’s qualification rules can receive a higher tier for a defined period. The tier is separate from the miles or points the member can spend on awards.

Programmes set their own tier names and requirements. A silver tier in one programme does not necessarily match the benefits or qualification level of a silver tier elsewhere.

How qualification works

Depending on the programme, progress may be based on eligible spend, flights, distance, segments or a combination. Rules also define a tracking period, eligible activity, tier start and end dates, and what is needed to renew. Partner flights and card activity may count differently from flights operated by the airline.

Do not assume that every mile earned is a qualifying mile. Check the programme’s terms for which activity counts toward status and which balance is only redeemable.

Benefits and limits

Possible benefits include priority check-in or boarding, extra baggage, lounge access, preferred seats or priority service. The programme’s own terms set the details. A benefit can depend on the operating airline, route, cabin, ticket type, airport and whether the member is travelling with a companion.

Airline status may also be recognised by an alliance, but alliance benefits have their own conditions. Check both the airline programme and the alliance rule before relying on a lounge or priority benefit on a partner flight.

Before pursuing a tier

  1. Check the exact activity that qualifies and the end date of the qualification period.
  2. Compare the benefits you would actually use with the flights or spend required.
  3. Read the rules for partner flights, award tickets and credit-card activity.
  4. Confirm the tier’s validity dates and renewal requirements.
