How to transfer Amex Membership Rewards points in Australia

Membership Rewards is the loyalty programme of American Express, and its Australian transfer partners are the airline and hotel programmes that an Australian-issued card can send points to, with the transfer rate and minimum requirement varying by partner. [2] American Express says points can be moved to a wide range of airline and frequent-guest programmes, and that the card member must already hold a membership in the programme the points are transferred into. [2]

Key takeaways

  • Points can be used for gift cards, travel booked through American Express Travel, shopping, covering card charges, or transferred to a partner programme; a transfer is only one of those choices. [2]
  • The transfer rate and the minimum requirement vary by partner, so the numbers that count are the ones shown for your card and your chosen programme. [2]
  • Which partners you can reach depends on the card and the products linked to your Rewards account, and the Membership Rewards dashboard lists the redemptions available to you. [2]
  • Marriott point transfers were listed as temporarily unavailable in Australia as of 18 October 2026, and the customer service team could not assist with those transfers by phone or chat. [2]

Which transfer partners can an Australian Membership Rewards card reach?

American Express describes the transfer option as a way to move Membership Rewards points to a wide range of Airline Rewards and Frequent Guest Partner Programs. [2] Redemption options are tied to the products on your Rewards account: the Australian programme page says that the Membership Rewards Ascent programme, available on a range of personal and business cards including the Platinum Edge Credit Card and the Gold Business Card, offers a range of redemption options, and that enrolled card members should log in to the dashboard to see the redemptions available to them. [2]

The brand names the Australian programme page highlights for point transfers are shown below.

PartnerWhat American Express Australia states
ALL AccorPoints can be transferred to ALL Accor and redeemed for stays and experiences at 5,600+ hotels worldwide; minimum redemption and terms apply. [2]
MarriottMarriott point transfers are temporarily unavailable, and the customer service team cannot assist with transfers by phone or chat during that period. [2]
Everyday Rewards$10 off a Woolworths shop for every 2,500 Membership Rewards points transferred; minimum redemption and terms apply. [2]

Qantas transfers sit under a separate document: American Express Australia publishes Qantas Direct terms alongside its consumer and business and corporate Membership Rewards terms. [2] For how Australian cards fit together with other bank and airline schemes, see Australia card points transfer partners.

How do you check the transfer ratio and minimum for a partner?

Start from the rate for the specific partner. American Express says the minimum requirement and transfer rate vary by partner, and that enrolment in the frequent traveller programme is the card member's responsibility, with fees possibly applying. [2] That is why the transfer ratio for one airline tells you nothing about the ratio for another, and why the minimum transfer should be confirmed partner by partner rather than assumed across the programme. [2]

The figure to act on is the one shown inside the account: American Express directs card members to the Membership Rewards dashboard to see their balance, their history of points redeemed and the redemption options available to them. [2] Confirm the partner and the ratio there before committing points, because card members hold different products and the options attached to those products differ. [2]

The governing terms are published in versions. The current Australian consumer terms, business and corporate terms, and Qantas Direct terms are effective until 8 November 2026 inclusive, and new versions of each are effective from 9 November 2026 inclusive. [2] Read the version in force on the date of the transfer.

What timing and eligibility checks decide whether a transfer is worth making?

Check that the receiving programme is open to transfers at the moment you plan to move points. The Australian programme page currently flags Marriott point transfers as temporarily unavailable and notes that the customer service team is unable to help with those transfers over the phone or chat while the pause lasts. [2]

Check your own eligibility on both sides. You must be a member of the applicable frequent traveller programme before points can be redeemed into it, enrolment is solely your responsibility, and fees may apply. [2] Check too that your card account is in good standing, since the programme's no-expiry position is stated on the basis of an active card member whose account is in good standing. [2]

There is no expiry clock forcing a quick decision: American Express says that, as long as you are an active card member and your account is in good standing, Membership Rewards points will never expire. [2] Points can also be spent without transferring them at all, for example on travel booked through American Express Travel. [2]

Exceptions and limits

  • Card type changes the list. The Ascent programme, available on cards including the Platinum Edge Credit Card and the Gold Business Card, sets out its own range of redemption options, and the dashboard is the place that shows what an individual card member can actually redeem for. [2]
  • Fees can sit on the partner side. Joining the frequent traveller programme you transfer into is your responsibility and fees may apply to that enrolment. [2]
  • Partner-level pauses happen. The Marriott suspension applies to point transfers and also removes phone and chat support for those transfers while it lasts. [2]
  • Terms roll over on 9 November 2026. New consumer, business and corporate, and Qantas Direct terms take effect from that date, replacing the versions effective until 8 November 2026 inclusive. [2]
  • Other markets have their own rules. American Express maintains separate United States Membership Rewards terms, and they set out details that belong to that programme: in most cases a minimum transfer of 1,000 points in multiples of 1,000, a typical processing time of 48 hours with some partners posting later, and transfers that cannot be reversed once made. [5] [6] The same terms require the name on the card and the partner account to match, allow a partner account held by an additional card member whose card was issued at least 90 days before linking, and charge an excise tax offset fee of $0.0006 per point, capped at $99, on transfers to a United States airline frequent flyer programme. [4] [6] Those are United States rules; for an Australian card, the rate and minimum to use are the ones shown for your partner in your own account. [2]
