AAdvantage

Overview

AAdvantage is American Airlines’ frequent-flyer programme. Redeemable unit: AAdvantage miles. Elite qualification uses separate Loyalty Points (LP). Directory elites: AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, Executive Platinum.

How to use AAdvantage miles

  1. Keep the redeemable balance separate from any status measure listed on this page.
  2. Before a flight, check the operating airline, marketing airline, fare and booking class against the programme earning rules.
  3. Before moving points or booking an award, check current availability, taxes, fees and change conditions on the official site.
  4. Review the expiry rule and the programme terms for account-specific exceptions.

Joining / eligibility

Verified from official T&Cs (effective March 1, 2026; page updated January 13, 2026):

  • You agree to the AAdvantage Terms by enrolling as an AAdvantage member, participating in the programme, or using Rewards/Benefits.
  • Programme covers personal AAdvantage accounts; AAdvantage Business℠ is separate and subject to its own terms.
  • High-level how-to: use Join AAdvantage® on aa.com (overview page shows Join CTA). Exact age/residency line items beyond what is quoted below were not isolated as a single “who may join” clause in this pass — treat residual fine print as not verified; follow T&Cs.

Earning & using

Official T&Cs — how miles/LP are earned on flights (paraphrase of readable clauses):

  • Eligible members may earn on eligible purchased tickets by (i) ticket price (base fare + mandatory carrier-imposed fees) for Base Miles (which also earn Loyalty Points), or (ii) distance flown (percentage by booking code) for some partner/special fares.
  • Government taxes/fees and optional airline fees (e.g. change/ticketing fees) do not earn.
  • Certain fares may be ineligible; Cuba routes only on AA-operated for accrual.
  • Past activity claims: up to 12 months; partner travel lookback limits relative to enrollment date apply (see T&Cs).

Official earn marketing page: earn miles and Loyalty Points when flying American; status members earn more (page cites +40% / +60% / +80% / +120% marketing bands — exact tier mapping not re-tabled here from that page alone).

Redeem (official)

Verified high-level from T&Cs §3 Mile Redemptions:

  • Miles redeem for travel-related awards including flight awards and upgrades; American may change opportunities any time.
  • Flight awards: availability and mileage cost can vary (including “last seat” may cost more); partner awards can have seating limits.
  • Award tickets once issued: generally one year from ticketing to complete travel unless noted; taxes/fees/surcharges are passenger responsibility.
  • Dynamic award pricing / partner charts: see official redeem flows — no static chart extracted this pass.

Core benefits

  • Miles separate from Loyalty Points for status.
  • Native elite rates raise both miles and LP on the reviewed self-op matrix.
  • oneworld alliance benefits referenced in T&Cs (details partner-dependent).
  • Overview CTAs: earn on AA flights; use miles for upgrades; partner hotels/cars/cruises.

Key limitations

  • Partner, special-fare, and credit-card bonuses must not reuse self-op rates.
  • Full joining age/residency matrix not isolated as a single verified bullet beyond enrollment acceptance language.
  • Award charts dynamic — not reproduced.

Use a calculator

The mileage calculator compares programmes with checked rules. The status calculator shows a number only where a threshold has been checked. Neither one treats an unknown condition as zero. Come back to this page for the scope those numbers belong to.
