FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What are booking-platform rewards on airport transfers?

Booking-platform rewards on airport transfers are the points, credits or member benefits a travel booking platform offers on a pre-booked airport transfer, together with the separate question of whether the same purchase also counts towards a hotel or airline loyalty programme. A transfer is sold as a product in its own right — a paid ride between an airport and a hotel, home or city address, often operated by a local transfer company rather than by the airline or the hotel — so a hotel or airline programme credits it only where that programme's own earning definition reaches the charge. [5] [8]

Key takeaways

  • A transfer is a separate travel product, so the deciding question is whether a hotel or airline programme's earning definition reaches the charge paid to the platform or the transfer operator. [5]
  • Marriott Bonvoy anchors qualifying spend to a stay folio at a participating property, or to spend at participating outlets located at those properties. [5]
  • American Airlines AAdvantage allows earning on third-party sites run by its partners, but miles earned through an offer post as Bonus Miles that do not count towards tier qualification. [8]
  • The same purchase cannot be credited to two programmes: AAdvantage excludes earning on a flight, hotel stay or car rental under both AAdvantage and another loyalty programme. [8]

How airport transfers are sold on booking platforms

An airport transfer is a pre-booked, paid ride between an airport and another address. Booking platforms offer it as an add-on beside flights, hotels and car hire, with its own price, its own confirmation and often its own provider, because the ride is frequently operated by a local transfer company rather than by the platform or the carrier. That separation matters because hotel and airline earning rules are written around specific kinds of charge rather than around the journey the transfer supports.

Marriott Bonvoy, the loyalty programme of Marriott International, Inc., states that members earn points or miles, and redeem awards, only in accordance with its programme rules and any applicable partner programme terms. [5] The AAdvantage programme of American Airlines, Inc. treats activity on third-party booking sites as the partner's territory: the member's dealings there are governed by that site's own terms and privacy policy, and American states that it is not responsible for the site or for the goods and services offered through it. [8]

Rewards offered by the platform itself are a separate arrangement from hotel or airline credit; they are covered in the programme pages for Booking.com Genius, One Key and Trip.com Membership.

Do hotel loyalty programmes earn on airport transfers?

Marriott Bonvoy's earn rules are built around the stay. Qualifying Charges are charges incurred during a stay in a guest room at a Participating Property by the member as the registered guest, on the member's folio and on up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates. [5] The examples the rules give are room rates, food and beverage, direct-dial in-room telephone and fax, and in-room movies and video games. [5] Spend away from the property is treated separately: charges incurred at outlets that are not located within the Participating Property or All-Inclusive Resort are not Qualifying Charges. [5]

There is also a route to earn without staying the night. A member can earn on charges incurred without a stay in a guest room at participating outlets located at certain participating properties, at five base points for each US dollar of qualifying spend on the total bill after discounts and exclusions. [5]

On that structure, an airport transfer is credited only when the charge reaches the programme through the property: as a folio charge during a stay, or as spend at a listed participating outlet. A transfer paid directly to a booking platform or to a transfer company is neither a charge on the member's folio nor spend at a participating outlet, so it falls outside the definition as written. [5]

Do airline programmes earn on transfers booked through a platform?

AAdvantage separates Base Miles, which also earn Loyalty Points, from Bonus Miles, which do not. [8] Unless an offer specifies otherwise, miles earned through an offer are Bonus Miles and therefore do not accrue Loyalty Points or count towards AAdvantage tier qualification or Million Miler status. [8]

Members may be able to earn Bonus Miles, or redeem AAdvantage miles, on third-party websites operated by AAdvantage Partners, which the programme calls Third-Party Sites; its own examples are AAdvantage Cars, AAdvantage Hotels and AAdvantage Cruises. [8] Those sites belong to the partner: the content is the partner's, and American disclaims responsibility for the site and for what is sold through it. [8] Where miles are earned through a partner offer, they post as Bonus Miles unless the offer says otherwise. [8]

Credit follows the person who uses the service. AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points are credited only to the account of the member who flies, rents a car, stays at a hotel, or otherwise earns mileage through other AAdvantage Partners. [8]

How do you claim missing rewards on a transfer booking?

American sets a twelve-month window: members may request miles and Loyalty Points for past, eligible transactions up to twelve months from the activity date, and a claim for uncredited miles from an eligible transaction must reach American within twelve months after the miles were earned. [8] For transactions with non-airline AAdvantage Partners, members are asked to keep the original paid invoice until the credit appears. [8]

Marriott Bonvoy asks for missing-credit requests within one year of the applicable activity, subject to its posting timelines, request channels, documentation requirements and property-specific procedures, and it reserves the right to correct, adjust, cancel or reconcile points, status or transactions at any time. [5]

Exceptions and limits

  • No double credit. Unless American states otherwise, AAdvantage miles, Loyalty Points and similar loyalty rewards cannot be earned for the same flight, hotel stay or car rental under both AAdvantage and any other loyalty programme in which American participates. [8]
  • Cash plus miles. Unless American states otherwise, transactions purchased or redeemed for a combination of cash and AAdvantage miles may not accrue AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points. [8]
  • Company bookings. Marriott Bonvoy accounts are individual, and points, awards, status and other value may not be earned, held, redeemed, transferred or used on behalf of a company or other entity except as the rules expressly permit. [5]
  • Non-participating properties. Listed brands and properties that do not participate in Marriott Bonvoy earn nothing, and a guest stay at a branded residence earns no points, miles, elite night credit or benefits unless the residence is expressly identified as participating. [5]
  • Partner availability and conflicts. Some AAdvantage Partner products and services are not available in every state or country, and where a partner's terms conflict with the AAdvantage terms, the AAdvantage terms take precedence as between the member and American. [8]

Frequently asked questions

Do airport transfers booked through a travel platform earn hotel points?

Marriott Bonvoy's qualifying charges are anchored to the stay folio and to participating outlets located at participating properties, so a transfer paid separately to a platform or a transfer operator falls outside that definition as written. [5]

Do transfer bookings earn airline miles?

AAdvantage permits earning and redemption on Third-Party Sites run by AAdvantage Partners, subject to those sites' own terms, and miles earned through a partner offer post as Bonus Miles that do not count towards tier qualification. [8]

Can I collect platform rewards and airline miles on the same transfer?

For the three travel components its rule names — a flight, a hotel stay and a car rental — AAdvantage excludes earning under both AAdvantage and another loyalty programme for the same purchase. [8]

What if my transfer booking never credits?

AAdvantage claims must arrive within twelve months after the miles were earned, and members should hold the original paid invoice for non-airline partners. [8] Marriott Bonvoy asks for missing-credit requests within one year of the activity. [5]

Who receives the credit when a transfer is booked for someone else?

AAdvantage credits miles and Loyalty Points only to the member who flies, rents a car, stays at a hotel or otherwise earns through its partners, and Marriott Bonvoy accounts are individual and may not be shared or jointly held. [8] [5]
