FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a booking-platform rewards qualifying booking?

Booking-platform rewards qualifying booking is a reservation that meets an online booking platform's published conditions for counting toward its rewards programme, whether the reward is level progress, a discount or points. The term describes a test applied to a booking, not one universal rule: Booking.com's Genius programme counts completed stay, flight, rental car, taxi and attraction bookings toward level progress and excludes several other booking types, so a reservation that counts in one programme may not count in another. [6]

Key takeaways

  • A qualifying booking is defined by the programme that offers the reward, not by the booking alone; Booking.com Genius uses completed bookings for level progress and excludes ride hail, cruises, insurance, public transit, free options and extra purchases. [6]
  • Booking.com counts each reservation as one booking, even when it covers multiple nights, rooms, seats or a return flight. [6]
  • Marriott Bonvoy attaches earning to the member's role as registered guest, the membership number at reservation or check-in, and payment of the charges, with property-level channel exceptions. [8]

What makes a booking a qualifying booking?

A qualifying booking is a reservation that satisfies the earning conditions a rewards programme publishes for that transaction. Those conditions can concern the booking channel, the rate or property, the payment status, and whether the booking is completed rather than cancelled. The term matters because an otherwise valid reservation can fail the test, leaving the traveller without the expected progress or reward.

Booking.com's Genius programme is a free loyalty programme built around three levels and discounts on stays and rental cars; the relevant qualification question is whether a booking counts toward level progress. [6] Booking.com says all stay, flight, rental car, taxi and attraction bookings a member completes count toward progress. [6] Before completed bookings appear in progress, Booking.com says they need to be updated in its system, which can take some time. [6]

Booking.com also limits the field: ride hail, cruises, insurance, public transit, free options, and extra purchases such as room upgrades, car seats for rental cars and additional luggage are excluded from Genius. [6] That exclusion list is programme-specific and does not set a rule for other booking platforms.

How does Booking.com Genius decide which bookings count?

As of 18 October 2026, Booking.com lists three Genius levels. Level 1 is unlocked by creating a free Booking.com account; Level 2 requires five completed bookings within two years; Level 3 requires 15 completed bookings within two years. [6]

Booking.com Genius levels and booking thresholds
Genius levelHow to reach itMain rewards
Level 1Create a free Booking.com account [6]10% discounts on stays and select rental cars [6]
Level 2Complete five bookings within two years [6]10–15% discounts on stays and select rental cars; free breakfasts and room upgrades on select stays [6]
Level 3Complete 15 bookings within two years [6]10–20% discounts on stays; 10–15% on select rental cars; free breakfasts, room upgrades and priority support on all stays [6]

Each reservation counts as one booking, no matter how many nights, flights or people the reservation includes. [6] For accommodation, a reservation covering multiple rooms counts as one booking. [6] For flights and other bookings, multiple seats on a single flight or a return flight booked under one reservation count as a single booking. [6]

Genius discounts on stays are applied to the price before taxes and fees, while rental-car discounts apply to the cost of the car only. [6] Eligible options are marked with a blue Genius label and discounts are applied automatically. [6]

How do channel and payment conditions work in Marriott Bonvoy?

Marriott Bonvoy is the loyalty programme of Marriott International, Inc., so it is a hotel programme rather than a booking-platform rewards scheme, but its published rules show the same kind of conditions attached to a booking. [8] Under the terms updated October 2026, members may earn Points or Miles only in accordance with the programme rules and any applicable partner programme terms. [8]

For a stay to generate Qualifying Charges, the member must be the registered guest and provide their membership number at the time of reservation or check-in, must stay in one of the reserved guest rooms, and must pay for the charges. [8] The charges can cover the member's room and up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates, and can include Qualifying Rates for Stays, food and beverages excluding alcoholic beverages or tobacco where prohibited by law, direct-dial in-room telephone and fax, and in-room movies and video games. [8]

Booking channel can override the general rule at a specific property. At Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas, Marriott Bonvoy says Points or Miles are not earned, and Points cannot be redeemed, for reservations booked through AtlantisBahamas.com. [8] The property is a non-branded Participating Property with limited participation, and members may earn Points or Miles on room rate only. [8]

Exceptions and limits

  • Level 1 does not need a booking. Booking.com says creating a free account instantly unlocks Genius Level 1 discounts. [6]
  • A higher level is not a guaranteed bigger discount. Booking.com says discount percentages can vary by property, and some participating properties may offer the same discount to members at every level. [6]
  • Unlocked rewards are kept. Booking.com says it does not demote members to lower levels, and once a level is unlocked its rewards are kept for life. [6]
  • A property can leave the programme. Marriott Bonvoy says that if a Participating Property exits, a member will not earn Points or Qualifying Nights for stays there, and awards and offers will no longer be valid after the exit date, even if the reservation was made before that date. [8]
  • Missing credit has a deadline. Marriott Bonvoy says missing-credit requests must be received within one year of the applicable activity, subject to posting timelines, request channels, documentation requirements and property- or programme-specific procedures. [8]
  • Account activity is separate from a qualifying booking. Marriott Bonvoy requires Qualifying Activity at least once every 24 months to retain accumulated Points, Awards and other benefits; gifting, transferring or receiving Points from another Member does not count. [8]

Frequently asked questions

Does every Booking.com reservation count toward Genius?

No. Booking.com counts completed stay, flight, rental car, taxi and attraction bookings, while ride hail, cruises, insurance, public transit, free options and certain extra purchases are excluded. [6]

Do multiple rooms or seats count as separate bookings?

No. Booking.com says each reservation counts as one booking regardless of the number of nights, rooms, flights or people; multiple rooms under one reservation, multiple seats on one flight, and a return flight under one reservation each count once. [6]

Does a higher Genius level always mean a bigger discount?

Not necessarily. Booking.com says discount percentages can vary by property, and some properties may offer the same discount at every level. [6]

What makes a Marriott Bonvoy stay count for points?

The member must be the registered guest, provide their membership number at reservation or check-in, stay in one of the reserved rooms and pay for the charges; the stay can include up to two additional guest rooms with the same dates. [8]

Can a booking stop qualifying after it is made?

For Marriott Bonvoy, yes, if the Participating Property exits the programme: stays there stop earning Points and Qualifying Nights, and awards and offers are no longer valid after the exit date, even for reservations made earlier. [8]
