FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a boarding pass?
A boarding pass is the document, or digital record, that an airline issues to a passenger after check-in to show that the passenger is cleared to board one specific flight, and it is what the gate reads before boarding begins. It normally carries the passenger's name, the flight number, the date, the route and a boarding group or zone, and on American Airlines that group decides the order in which its holder is called to board. Key takeaways
- The group printed on an American Airlines boarding pass sets the order of boarding, running from ConciergeKey and the First and Business cabins through Group 9 for Basic Economy. [1]
- Elite status sits inside that order: AAdvantage Executive Platinum boards in Group 1, Platinum Pro in Group 2, Platinum in Group 3 and Gold in Group 4. [2]
- Boarding on American usually starts 30 to 50 minutes before scheduled departure and ends 15 minutes before it, and a passenger who has not boarded may have the seat reassigned. [1]
- Keep the boarding pass after landing: American's AAdvantage terms allow the airline to ask for copies of boarding passes when a member claims miles that were earned but never credited. [5]
How does a boarding pass work?
A boarding pass comes from check-in rather than from booking. Once the reservation is accepted and a seat is confirmed, the airline produces a record that ties one named passenger to one flight, and the gate uses that record to confirm that the person in front of it is entitled to travel on that flight that day. Paper and digital versions carry the same core information, and which formats a carrier accepts at a particular airport is a matter for that carrier. The document only appears once the traveller has cleared the airline's check-in and arrival cut-offs, which are covered under check-in deadline.
Boarding is where the pass does most of its work. American Airlines boards by group, and its boarding page sets out the order in which each group is called, matched to the type of boarding pass the traveller holds. [1] Group position, and the privileges attached to it, is the part of the pass travellers most often compare; priority boarding is the general term for being called ahead of the standard queue. At airports that verify identity by facial recognition instead of reading the document at the gate, the process is described under biometric boarding.
What do American Airlines boarding groups mean?
American Airlines assigns boarding groups to types of boarding pass, and the group decides the order in which passengers are invited forward. The table below follows American's published boarding order as of 18 October 2026. [1]
| Boarding group | Who it covers |
|---|---|
| ConciergeKey | ConciergeKey members |
| First | Seats ticketed as First on domestic flights, or Flagship First on international flights |
| Business | Seats ticketed as Business on domestic flights, or Flagship Business on international flights |
| Family boarding | Families with children under 2 years old |
| Group 1 | AAdvantage Executive Platinum; active duty U.S. military with valid military ID |
| Group 2 | AAdvantage Platinum Pro; oneworld Emerald |
| Group 3 | AAdvantage Platinum; oneworld Sapphire |
| Group 4 | AAdvantage Gold; oneworld Ruby; AirPass; Premium Economy; Citi/AAdvantage Executive cardmembers; travellers who bought Priority boarding |
| Group 5 (Preferred boarding) | Main Cabin Extra excluding Basic Economy; AAdvantage members who earn 15,000 Loyalty Points; eligible AAdvantage credit cardmembers; AAdvantage Business Select travellers |
| Group 6 | AAdvantage members |
| Groups 7 and 8 | Main cabin |
| Group 9 | Basic Economy |
American states that the Basic Economy entry in Group 9 does not apply to AAdvantage status members, to AAdvantage members who reach 15,000 Loyalty Points during the qualification year, or to eligible AAdvantage credit cardmembers. [1]
The loyalty side of the programme presents the same information as a status benefit, listing Group 4 boarding for AAdvantage Gold, Group 3 for AAdvantage Platinum, Group 2 for AAdvantage Platinum Pro and Group 1 for AAdvantage Executive Platinum, with the warning that benefits may not be available on all flights or may vary by flight. [2] Alliance rank appears in the same list: oneworld Emerald boards in Group 2, oneworld Sapphire in Group 3 and oneworld Ruby in Group 4. [1]
When does boarding close on American Airlines?
Most American Airlines flights begin boarding 30 to 50 minutes before scheduled departure, and the airline notes that the exact time depends on the destination and the aircraft. Boarding ends 15 minutes before departure. A passenger who is not on board by then may have the seat reassigned to someone else, and nobody is allowed to board once the doors have closed. [1]
Those timings sit behind the earlier airport steps, so holding a boarding pass does not by itself protect a seat. The first cut-off to clear is the check-in deadline, and the position in the queue at the gate is set by priority boarding.
Why keep a boarding pass after the flight?
American's AAdvantage terms and conditions, effective 1 March 2026, provide that a member who believes AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points were earned but not properly credited may be required to submit documentation, which may include copies of ticket coupons, boarding passes and receipts. [5] The airline also asks members to quote their AAdvantage number when making a reservation or using a partner's services, and to keep flight documents until the miles and points appear on the mileage summary. [5]
Two further rules attach to the name and number on the travel record. To receive AAdvantage rewards and benefits, the information held on the AAdvantage account — name, date of birth and address — must match the information in the reservation. [5] And after a flight departs, a traveller can no longer change which frequent traveller programme was selected for that flight. [5]
Exceptions and limits
- Early boarding for assistance. Customers who need special assistance can ask to board early at the gate on American. [1]
- Buying a place in the queue. Travellers who buy Priority boarding are listed in Group 4 of American's boarding order. [1]
- Benefits can be flight-specific. American warns that status benefits may not be available on all flights or may vary by flight. [2]
- Privileges can be lost. Priority boarding is among the AAdvantage rewards and benefits that American says are forfeited immediately if it terminates an account for any reason. [5]
Everything above describes American Airlines' published boarding practice for travel on its own flights, as published on 18 October 2026. Group numbers, gate cut-off times and the identity checks performed at the gate are set separately by each airline, so the group names and timings here should not be read across to another carrier.
Frequently asked questions
Which American Airlines boarding group am I in?
The group follows your cabin, status and fare type. AAdvantage Executive Platinum sits in Group 1, Platinum Pro in Group 2, Platinum in Group 3 and Gold in Group 4, while Basic Economy normally boards in Group 9. [1] [2]
Can you board after the doors close on American Airlines?
No. Boarding ends 15 minutes before departure, and American states that a passenger will not be allowed to board once the doors close. [1]
Can families or passengers needing help board earlier?
American lists family boarding for families with children under 2 years old, and says customers who need special assistance can ask to board early at the gate. [1]
Why would an airline ask for a boarding pass after the trip?
It works as proof of travel. American's AAdvantage terms say documentation may be required for miles that were earned but not credited, and that it may include copies of ticket coupons, boarding passes and receipts. [5]
