FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a flight number?

A flight number is the identifier an airline assigns to a scheduled flight, usually paired with the airline’s code so that one specific service can be referred to in timetables, bookings and operational messages. It is not a route name or a fare product, and on codeshare services the marketing and operating flight numbers can differ.

Key takeaways

  • A flight number identifies a scheduled flight rather than a whole route; on a codeshare, the airline whose code appears on the booking may be different from the airline operating the aircraft. [5]
  • United Airlines’ 2026 Premier Status Match Challenge, for applications submitted between January 8 and December 21, 2026, is valid only on flights operated by United and United Express and is not valid on United-marketed codeshare flights operated by other carriers. [5]
  • United Airlines’ MileagePlus rules say United may, in its sole discretion, permit members to credit mileage for flights on other airlines, and may prohibit accrual on certain routes flown by partner airlines. [4]
  • United Airlines’ 2026 Premier Status Match Challenge also says flights on tickets that do not earn Premier qualifying credits do not qualify, so a flight number alone does not settle eligibility. [5]

What does a flight number identify?

At its simplest, a flight number points to one scheduled flight in an airline’s timetable. It is usually paired with an airline code, and the number labels the service rather than the city pair, so the same number can appear on a different date or route later. A flight number is not a route name, a fare product or an airline numeric code; those are separate identifiers.

On a codeshare, one airline may sell seats on a flight operated by another, so the same flight can appear under more than one airline code and number. The airline whose code is used for sales is the marketing carrier; the airline flying the aircraft is the operating carrier. This is why a booking can show one flight number while the aircraft and crew belong to another airline.

How do airline codes work on codeshare flights?

United Airlines’ 2026 Premier Status Match Challenge, for applications submitted between January 8 and December 21, 2026, is valid only on flights operated by United and United Express. [5] It is not valid on United-marketed codeshare flights operated by other carriers. [5]

That wording separates the marketing airline from the operating airline for a programme rule. [5] A United-marketed flight operated by another carrier is excluded even though the booking may be sold by United. [5]

Does a flight number decide mileage or status?

United Airlines’ MileagePlus rules say United may, in its sole discretion, permit members to credit mileage for flights on other airlines. [4] They also say United may prohibit accrual on certain routes flown by partner airlines. [4]

The 2026 Premier Status Match Challenge adds fare conditions. [5] Flights on tickets that do not earn Premier qualifying credits do not qualify for the offer. [5] Basic Economy and base fare tickets earn Premier qualifying points (PQP) but not Premier qualifying flights (PQF). [5]

Exceptions and limits

  • Codeshare exclusion. United Airlines’ 2026 Premier Status Match Challenge is not valid on United-marketed codeshare flights operated by other carriers. [5]
  • Operated-flight limit. The same offer is valid only on flights operated by United and United Express. [5]
  • Fare conditions. The same offer says flights on tickets that do not earn Premier qualifying credits do not qualify, and that Basic Economy and base fare tickets earn PQP but not PQF. [5]
  • Partner routes. United Airlines’ MileagePlus rules say United may prohibit accrual on certain routes flown by partner airlines. [4]
  • Airline-specific numbering. On a codeshare, a United-marketed flight can be operated by another carrier, so the marketing code shown on the booking does not by itself identify the operating airline. [5]
