FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a marketing carrier?

A marketing carrier is the airline that puts its own flight number on a ticket and sells that seat under its own fare and ticketing rules, which is not always the airline whose aircraft actually flies the route. On a codeshare two carriers share one flight, and United Airlines' 2026 MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge shows the split in practice: the offer counts flights operated by United or United Express and is "not valid on United-marketed codeshare flights operated by other carriers". [7]

Key takeaways

  • A booking can carry one airline's flight number while another airline supplies the aircraft, crew and ground service, so the airline you bought from and the airline you board with may not be the same. [7]
  • United's 2026 MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge counts only flights operated by United or United Express and rules out United-marketed codeshare flights operated by other carriers. [7]
  • MileagePlus award tickets may be subject to the taxes, fees, Contract of Carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which travel is scheduled. [6]

How is the marketing carrier different from the operating carrier?

Every flight in a reservation has two possible identities. The marketing carrier is the airline whose code and flight number appear on the itinerary, whose inventory the seat was sold from and whose ticket conditions travel with the booking. The operating carrier is the airline that provides the aircraft and crew for that flight number. When the two are the same airline there is nothing to reconcile; when they differ, the booking is a codeshare.

United's own wording keeps the two apart. Its status-match terms define an activating flight as one operated by United or United Express that is completed within 90 days of the documentation being approved and posted to the member's MileagePlus account, and the qualification rules say the offer is valid only on flights operated by United and United Express, not on United-marketed codeshare flights operated by other carriers. [7] A United flight number on the booking therefore does not, by itself, make a flight a United-operated one.

The airline operating the flight matters for earning as well. United's MileagePlus rules say United alone decides which partner airlines are eligible for mileage credit, may change that list at any time with or without notice, and may prohibit the accrual of mileage, Premier Qualifying Credits and other benefits on certain routes flown by partner airlines when required by law or otherwise. [6]

Whose rules apply to a codeshare ticket?

In general practice, the fare rules and ticket conditions attached to a booking come from the airline that sells and tickets it, while the operating airline's contract of carriage governs how the flight itself is run — boarding, carriage and re-accommodation. United's MileagePlus rules lean the same way for awards: MileagePlus award tickets "may be subject to the taxes, fees, tariffs, Contract of Carriage, ticket terms, and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which travel is scheduled". [6] That wording points at the airline actually flying, not the one whose flight number is printed.

United is also explicit that it does not answer for its partners. The MileagePlus rules describe partners as independent entities, state that United is not responsible for the nature or quality of products or services provided by partners, and say that partner offers are governed by the terms and conditions set out by the applicable partner. [6] Routing and destinations for award travel on airline partners are likewise determined by the individual travel partners. [6]

The practical point is that a single codeshare itinerary can be touched by two sets of paperwork: the marketing carrier's conditions on the sale and the operating carrier's conditions on the journey. Checking only one of them can leave a traveller expecting a change, refund or rebooking right that the other document does not provide.

Does a United-marketed flight count for the status match?

For the 2026 MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge, the answer turns on who operates the flight. Applications are accepted between January 8 and December 21, 2026, and the qualification rules state that the offer is valid only on flights operated by United and United Express and is not valid on United-marketed codeshare flights operated by other carriers. [7] Flights must also be posted to the member's MileagePlus account in order to qualify. [7]

The Premier qualifying flights (PQF) and Premier qualifying points (PQP) needed to keep a matched level must be earned on flights operated by United or United Express, or as PQP from purchases made with an eligible United Chase credit card, during the Challenge Period. [7] Complimentary matched status runs for 120 days from the date of the activating flight, and the number of PQF and PQP required depends on the Premier level the member is matched to. [7]

This is the clearest everyday example of the marketing/operating split: two bookings can both show a United flight number, and only one of them will clear the challenge requirements.

What follows the operating carrier on the day of travel?

Airport-side treatment can follow the airline operating the flight rather than the flight number on the ticket. United says members may enjoy Premier benefits on United- or United Express-operated flights by providing their account number when making reservations or at check-in. [7] Members holding complimentary status through the challenge period may not have access to all reciprocal Premier benefits with United's partners, including access to Star Alliance lounges. [7] Lounge access, in other words, depends on the programme whose lounge it is and the airline operating the flight, not simply on the marketing carrier printed on the itinerary — see alliance status recognition for how that works across a group of carriers.

Earning on partner-operated flying is a separate question with its own rules; partner earning covers how programmes credit flights that another airline operates. [6]

Exceptions and limits

  • The status-match rule is narrow. The exclusion of United-marketed codeshare flights operated by other carriers belongs to the 2026 MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge, whose application window runs from January 8 to December 21, 2026; it is a rule about that offer, not a general statement of how MileagePlus credits flights. [7]
  • The award-ticket wording is permissive. United says MileagePlus award tickets "may be subject to" the taxes, fees, Contract of Carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which travel is scheduled — the rule allows those terms to attach rather than naming which ones will apply to a given booking. [6]
  • Programme rules can change. United reserves the right to change the MileagePlus rules, benefits, conditions of participation and qualification criteria at any time, with or without notice. [6]
  • The lounge limit is time-limited. The note that members may not have access to all reciprocal Premier benefits, including Star Alliance lounges, is written for the complimentary 120-day Challenge Period, not for every Premier membership. [7]
  • Other programmes may differ. The rules described here come from United's MileagePlus documentation; other carriers and alliances handle codeshare earning, status and airport benefits under their own terms, and this page does not extend United's wording to them.

Frequently asked questions

Is the marketing carrier always the airline that flies the plane?

No. On a codeshare, the marketing carrier's flight number sits on the booking while the operating carrier provides the aircraft and crew. United's 2026 status-match terms treat the two as different things, excluding United-marketed codeshare flights operated by other carriers. [7]

Whose contract of carriage covers a MileagePlus award ticket?

United's MileagePlus rules say award tickets may be subject to the taxes, fees, tariffs, Contract of Carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which travel is scheduled. [6]

Does a codeshare flight earn miles automatically?

Not automatically. United decides which partner airlines are eligible for mileage credit, may change that list at any time, and may prohibit accrual on certain routes flown by partner airlines. [6]

Do matched Premier benefits work on a partner-operated flight?

During the 120-day Challenge Period, United says members may not have access to all reciprocal Premier benefits with United's partners, including Star Alliance lounges, while Premier benefits can be used on United- or United Express-operated flights by giving the account number at reservation or check-in.
