FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a fare rule?
A fare rule is the set of conditions that attaches to a particular airline ticket or fare brand and governs what the buyer may change, cancel, refund, carry, select, upgrade and earn. The conditions travel with the fare rather than with the cabin, so two passengers on the same flight can be bound by different rules because they bought different fare brands. [1] [2] [3]

Key takeaways
- A fare rule is the contract behind the price: it sets whether a ticket can be changed or refunded, what credit a cancellation produces, when a seat is assigned, how the passenger boards and how much the ticket earns. [1] [2] [3]
- The same airline can apply very different rules inside one cabin, and the cheapest brand is normally the most restricted: Southwest's Basic fare earns 2 Rapid Rewards points per dollar against 14 for Choice Extra. [3]
- Restrictions are usually written per brand, not per route, but route and ticket-issue date can still change the outcome — American's Basic Economy baggage allowance depends on where the ticket flies and when it was issued. [1]
What does a fare rule control?
A fare rule answers the practical questions a traveller asks after buying a ticket. Can the date be moved, and at what cost? If the trip is abandoned, does the money come back to the card, or arrive as a credit with an expiry date? Is a checked bag included? Is a seat chosen in advance or handed out at the airport? Is the ticket eligible for an upgrade or a same-day change? How many miles or points will the flight produce? Airlines publish these answers against each fare brand, which is why the same seat can carry several different rule sets on one flight.
American Airlines publishes its Basic Economy conditions as a distinct set of rules: those fares cannot be combined with other fare types, the tickets cannot be changed except in the listed cases, and the brand carries its own baggage, seating, boarding and earning terms. [1] Delta Air Lines sells three fare experiences — Basic, Classic and Extra — inside each cabin from Delta Main to Delta One, and the experience rather than the cabin determines flexibility, seat selection and mileage. [2] Southwest Airlines bundles its conditions into four fares: Basic, Choice, Choice Preferred and Choice Extra. [3]
How do American, Delta and Southwest fare rules compare?
The table compares the most restricted brand at each of the three carriers.
| Condition | American Basic Economy | Delta Basic | Southwest Basic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Changes | Not permitted by default, with a 24-hour window and a Europe-origin exception [1] | Allowed for a fee [2] | Allowed only by upgrading to a higher fare [3] |
| Refund or credit | Refund inside 24 hours in defined cases; afterwards no refund to the original form of payment, though AAdvantage members may cancel for travel credit for a fee [1] | Partial eCredit minus cancellation fees; a full refund to the original form of payment is an Extra benefit [2] | Non-refundable apart from the 24-hour policy; cancelling at least 10 minutes before departure yields a flight credit valid six months from booking [3] |
| Seat selection | Free assignment at check-in unless the member qualifies; otherwise a seat can be bought at any time [1] | Seat assigned after check-in [2] | Standard seat assigned at check-in except for A-List Preferred, A-List and Rapid Rewards credit cardmembers [3] |
| Boarding | Last, typically Group 9 [1] | Zone 8 in Delta Main [2] | Last to board [3] |
| Earning | No AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points on tickets bought on or after 17 December 2025 [1] | For general SkyMiles members, no miles in Delta Main Basic, but 2 miles per $1 in Delta Comfort Basic, Delta First Basic, Delta Premium Select Basic and Basic Business; Medallion members earn 4 (Silver), 5 (Gold), 6 (Platinum) or 8 (Diamond) miles per $1 in those Basic experiences [2] | 2 Rapid Rewards points per dollar, against 6 for Choice, 10 for Choice Preferred and 14 for Choice Extra [3] |
How do fare rules decide changes, refunds and credit?
American. Basic Economy tickets cannot be changed, but a buyer has 24 hours from the moment of purchase to change or cancel for a refund if the booking was made at least seven days before departure; after that, changes and refunds to the original form of payment are not allowed. [1] Flight changes may still carry a difference in fare. [1] Two exceptions exist: trips originating in Europe, excluding Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, can be changed for a fee, and AAdvantage members may cancel for travel credit for a fee when the AAdvantage number is already in the reservation, the trip was booked in the United States directly with American, the flight is American-marketed and operated from the 50 states, and the cancellation happens before the first flight departs. [1]
Delta. Basic tickets allow changes for a fee, and cancelling a Basic ticket makes it eligible for a partial eCredit minus cancellation fees, while Extra fares are refundable to the original form of payment. [2] Award tickets follow the same logic: cancelling a Basic award ticket carries a fee, while Classic award tickets receive a full mileage redeposit, and the Extra experience cannot be booked with miles at all. [2]
Southwest. Basic fares are non-refundable except as allowed by the 24-hour cancellation policy, and a change requires upgrading the fare. [3] Cancelling at least 10 minutes before the original departure time produces a flight credit, which expires six months from the date the fare was booked and ticketed, against twelve months for credits created from Choice, Choice Preferred and Choice Extra. [3] No cancellation fee applies to any of the four fares. [3]
How do fare rules change bags and mileage earning?
Baggage is part of the fare rule, and at American the position is route-specific: Basic Economy fares do not include free checked bags, with exemptions for AAdvantage status members and, on flights within the United States and Canada marketed and operated by American, for eligible AAdvantage credit cardmembers. [1] Travel to and from Australia and New Zealand carries one free checked bag in Basic Economy, and for travel to and from Asia, India and Qatar there are no free checked bags on tickets issued on or before 22 April 2026 but one free checked bag on tickets issued on or after 23 April 2026. [1] At Southwest, bag fees apply to Basic, Choice and Choice Preferred, while Choice Extra and A-List Preferred members receive two free checked bags; A-List members and Rapid Rewards credit cardmembers receive only their first checked bag free, and checked bag benefits do not apply on flights booked with a partner carrier. [3]
Earning is written into the same rules. American calculates AAdvantage miles on ticket price, meaning base fare plus carrier-imposed fees and excluding government taxes and fees, but Basic Economy tickets bought on or after 12:00 a.m. Central Time on 17 December 2025 earn neither AAdvantage miles nor Loyalty Points. [1] At Southwest, points are earned on qualifying flights paid entirely in dollars, LUV Vouchers, gift cards or flight credits, and on the dollar portion of a Cash + Points booking; reward flights, charter flights, nonrevenue travel, Companion Pass travel and some agency bookings are excluded. [3]
Exceptions and limits
- The American travel-credit route applies only if the cancellation fee is lower than the ticket price; if the fee is more, no travel credit is issued. [1]
- American Basic Economy tickets bought on or after 18 May 2026 are not eligible for complimentary upgrades, while earlier tickets let AAdvantage status members upgrade themselves plus one companion on the same flight; complimentary upgrades are limited to flights marketed and operated by American within and between the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Central America. [1]
- Delta does not let a passenger change the fare experience after purchase — the seat product can be upgraded, but a Classic ticket cannot be turned into Basic or Extra. [2] Basic experiences are also excluded from same-day confirmed changes and standby and from complimentary upgrades. [2]
- On a Southwest round trip where one or both segments are booked with a Basic fare, cancellation is permitted only if both segments are cancelled or the Basic segment is upgraded. [3]
- Scope: every condition on this page belongs to the named brand of the named carrier in the market described, and other brands of the same airline carry their own terms. [1] [2] [3]
Frequently asked questions
Can a Basic Economy ticket be changed?
At American it cannot be changed except inside the 24-hour purchase window or when the trip originates in Europe, where a fee applies; at Delta Basic changes are allowed for a fee; at Southwest a change requires upgrading to a higher fare. [1] [2] [3]
Do the cheapest fares still earn miles?
It depends on the carrier and the cabin: American Basic Economy tickets bought on or after 17 December 2025 earn nothing; for general SkyMiles members, Delta Main Basic earns nothing while Delta Comfort Basic, Delta First Basic, Delta Premium Select Basic and Basic Business earn 2 miles per $1, and Medallion members earn more by tier, up to 8 miles per $1 for Diamond; Southwest Basic earns 2 Rapid Rewards points per dollar. [1] [2] [3]
What happens to the money if a restricted ticket is cancelled?
American returns nothing to the original form of payment after the 24-hour window, Delta issues a partial eCredit minus cancellation fees on Basic, and Southwest issues a flight credit that expires six months after booking. [1] [2] [3]
Is a checked bag included in a restricted fare?
American Basic Economy excludes free checked bags with route and status exceptions, and Southwest applies bag fees to Basic, Choice and Choice Preferred while Choice Extra includes two free checked bags. [1] [3]
