Checked baggage allowance: weight, pieces, carriers and status
Baggage allowance depends on the ticket, route, operating carrier and fare. Check each segment, then verify the final destination printed on the bag tag.
Start with the e-ticket
Check the checked-baggage field for every passenger and flight segment. It may specify a number of pieces, a total weight, or both. Weight-based and piece-based systems work differently, and destinations on the same airline can use different systems. An excess fee may apply to weight, number of bags or dimensions separately.
Check every carrier on a codeshare itinerary
A codeshare displays the marketing airline’s flight number even when a partner operates the aircraft. Check-in and baggage handling may be determined by the operating carrier, and a partner can apply different limits even when the ticket shows the marketing airline’s code.
British Airways says that on many connecting journeys using several airline codes, the allowance is generally determined by the airline operating the longest flight. Treat that as the carrier’s own rule for eligible journeys, not a universal rule for every airline, country or ticket. Ask the issuing carrier and check the actual operating carriers for the full ticket.
Check elite and cabin allowances
Extra baggage from a frequent-flyer tier or premium cabin can depend on programme, route, fare, operating airline and alliance conditions. Some carriers apply a member’s extra allowance only to their own operated flights. Confirm each segment and do not assume the card’s headline benefit covers every partner flight.
Confirm whether bags will go to the final airport
A single itinerary, booking reference or connected ticket can affect through-check, but does not guarantee it. Customs procedures, airport transfer rules, airline agreements and separate tickets can require you to collect and recheck a bag. At the counter, look at the printed bag-tag destination. If it stops at the connection airport, ask the agent how to check the next flight. Keep the baggage receipt, especially on a self-transfer.
Before booking and at the airport
- List the marketing carrier, operating carrier, cabin, fare type and allowance for every segment.
- Check whether checked baggage is included in the fare; Basic Economy and award tickets may follow different rules.
- Confirm any elite-status or card benefit applies to the operating flight and ticket.
- For a codeshare or multi-airline itinerary, ask the ticketing carrier which allowance applies and check the operating airline’s conditions.
- Weigh each bag before leaving; a piece-based allowance generally does not let an overweight bag borrow unused weight from another bag.
- At check-in, verify the bag tag shows the intended final destination and keep the receipt until collection.
