Through-checked baggage: verify the tag and transfer
A connection does not prove that your bag will be checked through. Confirm the tag destination, ticket arrangement, operating carrier and customs process.
Ask one specific question at check-in
Ask: “Is this bag checked through to [final airport]?” Then look at the printed destination on the bag tag. If it only shows the connection airport, plan to collect and check it again.
Why the answer can differ
Through-checking may depend on whether your flights are on one ticket, whether the carriers have a baggage agreement, which carrier operates each segment, and whether customs rules require you to collect the bag. A codeshare flight number by itself does not prove that the bag will transfer.
If you must reclaim and re-check
- Check whether you need to pass immigration or customs.
- Find the baggage hall and the next airline’s check-in counter.
- Allow time for terminal transfer and the new check-in cutoff.
- Keep the bag tag and baggage receipt until the trip ends.
Ask the operating carrier
Baggage handling is governed by the carriers and itinerary. Verify the rule for your actual ticket before departure, especially when the journey uses separate tickets.
