FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a flight segment?
A flight segment is a single flight leg between two consecutive points — one takeoff and one landing — and it is the unit frequent flyer rules reach for when they price an award, apply an upgrade or credit miles. Because a journey can be sold as one ticket but flown as several legs, programmes usually define the segment in their own documents rather than leave it to the reader. American Airlines, for example, defines a flight segment in its Conditions of Carriage as "a nonstop point-to-point flight that consists of one takeoff and one touchdown". [3]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- A segment is one nonstop hop. American Airlines describes it as a nonstop point-to-point flight made up of one takeoff and one touchdown. [3]
- American uses the segment as the unit for parts of its refund rules, including the cabin flown on the affected segment and the value of an unused segment. [3]
- Some American baggage refund windows run from the last segment of the itinerary rather than from each leg. [3]
- United's MileagePlus rules list Premier qualifying segments (PQS) among the Premier Qualifying Credits, but say that from 1 January 2020 members no longer achieve Premier status on the basis of PQM, PQS or PQD. [6]
How is a flight segment defined?
American Airlines publishes a short list of defined terms inside its Conditions of Carriage, a document it marks as updated 13 August 2026 and describes as the contract between the passenger and the airline. [3] In that list, a flight segment is a nonstop point-to-point flight that consists of one takeoff and one touchdown. [3]
The same list defines a stopover as a planned stop in a city or airport for over 4 hours. [3] The two terms describe different things: the segment is the flying portion between two consecutive points, while the stopover describes the pause in the journey. A long connection therefore changes how the trip is described without changing what a segment is.
American also states that carriage is subject to these Conditions of Carriage in addition to the terms printed on the ticket, published fare rules and applicable tariffs filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation. [3] So the definition of a segment sits alongside — not above — whatever the fare rules for a particular ticket say.
How do segments appear in ticket and refund rules?
American's refund rules use the segment as the unit in several places. If a passenger is downgraded to a lower cabin and chooses to travel anyway, American refunds the difference between the original fare and the fare for the cabin flown on the affected segment. [3] For a non-refundable ticket, American refunds the ticket, or the value of the unused segment of the trip, to the original form of payment in listed circumstances: American cancels the flight, a schedule change moves departure by more than 4 hours, a passenger or travel companion dies, or military orders require cancellation, with supporting paperwork requested for the last two. [3]
Baggage refunds are measured differently again — from the end of the itinerary. American lists a prompt, automatic refund for delayed or lost checked bags when the bag was not delivered or picked up within the windows below, counted from completing the last segment. [3]
| Itinerary | Bag not delivered or picked up within |
|---|---|
| Domestic | 12 hours of completing the last segment [3] |
| International, where the nonstop flight between the U.S. and the international point is under 12 hours | 15 hours of completing the last segment [3] |
| International, where that nonstop flight is over 12 hours | 30 hours of completing the last segment [3] |
Ticket validity is tied to the first completed flight rather than to individual legs: an unused American ticket must be started within one year of issue, and a partially used ticket must have all new travel completed within one year of the first completed flight, unless the ticket states otherwise. [3]
How does United count flights and segments for status?
United's MileagePlus rules define Premier Qualifying Credits to include Premier qualifying dollars (PQD), Premier qualifying segments (PQS), Premier qualifying miles (PQM), Premier qualifying flights (PQF) and Premier Qualifying Points (PQP). [6] The same rules state that, effective 1 January 2020, members may achieve Premier status through the accumulation of PQP and PQF, and will no longer achieve Premier status on the basis of PQM, PQS or PQD. [6]
Where flights rather than segments are the counting unit, the operating carrier matters. Under the 2026 MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge — applications open between 8 January and 21 December 2026 — a member keeps matched status by earning a set number of PQF and PQP during a 120-day Challenge Period, and the offer is valid only on flights operated by United or United Express, not on United-marketed codeshare flights operated by other carriers. [7] Flights must post to the MileagePlus account to qualify, and Basic Economy and base fare tickets earn PQP but do not earn PQF. [7]
For mileage itself, United credits air travel mileage and Premier Qualifying Credits only to individual members and only for flights actually flown by that member, and awards neither for flight cancellations. [6] Class-of-service bonus miles and Premier Qualifying Credits are credited according to the fare paid, not the cabin flown, and are not credited on an upgrade. [6]
Where these rules stop
- Who operates the flight. In its check-in and boarding guidance, American tells passengers on a codeshare flight operated by one of its partners to check with that airline. [3]
- Which ticket. American's segment-based refunds for non-refundable tickets apply only in the circumstances it lists, and the carrier asks for supporting paperwork for the death and military-order cases. [3]
- Which challenge window. The United Status Match requirements apply to applications submitted between 8 January and 21 December 2026, and matched status expires after the Challenge Period unless the PQF and PQP requirement is met or a higher level is earned. [7] Flights on tickets that do not earn Premier qualifying credits do not count toward that offer. [7]
- Which programme. These definitions belong to American Airlines and United MileagePlus respectively; other airlines and hotel programmes write their own rules, so a segment count taken from one programme's document is not a guide to another's. [3] [6]
Frequently asked questions
Is a connecting trip one segment or several?
Under American's definition, each nonstop point-to-point flight with one takeoff and one touchdown is a segment. [3] A journey that changes planes at an intermediate airport therefore consists of more than one nonstop flight.
What is the difference between a segment and a stopover?
American defines a stopover as a planned stop in a city or airport for over 4 hours, while a segment is the nonstop flight itself. [3] The stopover describes the pause; the segment describes the flying.
Do segments still count towards United Premier status?
Premier qualifying segments appear in United's definition of Premier Qualifying Credits, but the rules state that from 1 January 2020 members no longer achieve Premier status on the basis of PQM, PQS or PQD and instead do so through PQP and PQF. [6]
Do codeshare flights earn PQF in the 2026 United Status Match Challenge?
The offer is valid only on flights operated by United or United Express and not on United-marketed codeshare flights operated by other carriers, and the flights must post to the member's MileagePlus account. [7]
How is a segment used in an American refund?
If a passenger accepts a downgrade to a lower cabin, American refunds the difference between the original fare and the fare for the cabin flown on the affected segment. [3]
