FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is ticket validity?
Ticket validity is the window in which an issued airline ticket can be used for travel, together with the fare conditions that must still be met for the airline to accept it. At American Airlines a ticket is generally valid for one year — counted from first issuance if the ticket has not been used, and from the first completed flight if it has been partly flown — unless the ticket states otherwise. [3]

Key takeaways
- Ticket validity covers two separate things: the date by which travel must be finished, and whether the ticket still meets the conditions attached to its fare. [3]
- American Airlines counts one year from first issuance for an unused ticket and one year from the first completed flight for a partly used one, unless the ticket states otherwise. [3]
- A ticket can be refused well before that deadline if the fare's dates of stay, purpose or status requirements are not met, or if it was bought through a prohibited booking practice. [3]
- Refunds run on separate rules from the travel deadline and depend on the fare type and on who ended the trip. [3]
How long is an American Airlines ticket valid?
In its Conditions of Carriage as updated on 13 August 2026, American Airlines sets the general period at one year. [3] If the ticket has not been used at all, travel must start within one year of the date the ticket was first issued. [3] If the ticket has been partly used, the remaining travel must be completed within one year of the first completed flight. [3] The carrier adds that these rules apply unless the ticket states otherwise, so a ticket that sets its own terms is governed by those terms. [3]
| Ticket state | Clock starts | What the deadline covers |
|---|---|---|
| Unused | Date the ticket was first issued | Travel must begin [3] |
| Partly used | Date of the first completed flight | All new travel must be completed [3] |
American gives two worked dates. An unused ticket issued on 1 June 2025 must have travel begun by 1 June 2026, and a round-trip ticket partly flown on 1 March 2026 must have all new travel completed by 1 March 2027. [3]
What starts the ticket validity clock?
Two events anchor the period. For a ticket that has not been flown, the reference point is the date it was first issued. [3] Once the first flight has been completed, the reference point moves to that flight, which is why the second example runs to a date a full year after the flight rather than a year after purchase. [3]
The ticket document is not the only text that counts. American incorporates the terms printed on the ticket, ticket jacket or receipt, the published fare rules and the applicable tariffs into its agreement with the passenger. [3] Its glossary describes a fare as the price paid plus the rules attached to that ticket, including whether it is refundable, and describes a ticket as the passenger ticket, bag check and boarding pass that incorporate the conditions of carriage, electronic tickets included. [3] Those attachments are where a different period or a condition on the fare would be found.
When is a ticket not valid before its end date?
American lists what a ticket must satisfy to be valid for travel: the journey must be to and from the cities on the ticket and in the trip record, and the passenger must meet all fare requirements. [3] Fare requirements can be dates of stay such as a Saturday night or a weekend, military status for a military fare, official government business for a government fare, or attendance at an event for a meeting or convention fare. [3] A ticket is not valid where those dates of stay, purpose or status requirements are not met. [3]
Tickets obtained through prohibited booking practices are also invalid. [3] American's examples include hidden city ticketing, where someone buys a ticket without intending to fly every flight in order to pay a lower fare; back-to-back ticketing, where two or more round-trip excursion fares are combined to get around minimum stay rules; booking a ticket in another person's name without consent; holding reservations to secure upgrades or block seats; automated re-shopping; and duplicate or physically impossible trips. [3] Where American finds evidence of such a practice it may cancel any unused part of the ticket, refuse to carry the passenger, decline a refund on an otherwise refundable ticket, and charge what the ticket would have cost without the practice. [3]
A fare sold by mistake can also be withdrawn: if American sells a fare in error it may void the ticket, refund it in full and notify the passenger within 72 hours of learning of the mistake, or at least 24 hours before departure where the ticket was bought less than 72 hours before that flight. [3]
How long does a ticket stay refundable?
Refund rights sit alongside validity but do not follow the same clock. American requires each passenger to hold a valid ticket to fly, states that a ticket cannot be used by or refunded to another passenger, and sends refunds to the original form of payment. [3] Where a ticket is bought directly and at least seven days before departure, the passenger generally has up to 24 hours from purchase to obtain a full refund, provided the trip is cancelled inside that window; tickets bought through a travel agency or another booking source must be handled by that source. [3]
On a refundable fare, American pays the full amount where travel has not started and the value of the unused travel where the ticket is partly used, refunding a credit card within seven business days and other payment methods within 20 days of receiving the paperwork. [3] On a non-refundable fare it pays no cash, but if the trip is cancelled before departure it cancels the ticket and issues a travel credit for future travel on American. [3] A non-refundable ticket is refunded to the original form of payment where American cancels the flight, where a schedule change moves departure by more than four hours, where a passenger or travel companion dies, or where military orders require cancellation, with supporting paperwork in the last two cases. [3]
Where the airline rather than the passenger ends the trip, involuntary refunds return the full amount if travel has not started and the unused value if it has, and passengers who were involuntarily denied boarding pay no refund fees or penalties. [3]
Exceptions and limits
- The ticket's own terms. American's one-year rule applies unless the ticket states otherwise, so an individual ticket can carry a different period. [3]
- Local refund rules. Some countries have different refund rules, and where they do American says it follows them. [3]
- Tickets from other sellers. A ticket bought through a travel agency or another booking source has to be refunded through that source rather than directly. [3]
- Government travel. Tickets issued for official government travel are refunded only to the government agency that issued the transportation request. [3]
- Award tickets. These are treated separately. United's MileagePlus rules say an award ticket may be subject to the taxes, fees, tariffs, contract of carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which travel is scheduled [6], so the operating carrier's ticket terms can still bear on an award trip. The rules specific to award travel are set out on the award ticket validity page.
- Other carriers. The one-year period described here is American Airlines' rule under its own conditions of carriage and is not a universal period that can be assumed for another airline.
Frequently asked questions
How long is an American Airlines ticket valid?
One year. An unused ticket must have travel started within a year of the date it was first issued, and a partly used ticket must have all remaining travel completed within a year of the first completed flight, unless the ticket states otherwise. [3]
Can I get money back if I cancel a non-refundable ticket?
Not in cash. If you cancel before departure, American cancels the ticket and issues a travel credit toward future travel, and refunds to the original form of payment happen only in listed situations such as the airline cancelling the flight or a schedule change of more than four hours. [3]
Can someone else fly on my ticket or receive the refund?
No. American states that a ticket is non-transferable, that it cannot be used by or refunded to any other passenger, and that all refunds go to the original form of payment. [3]
Is my ticket valid if I do not fly every flight on the itinerary?
American says a ticket is valid only when travel is to and from the cities on the ticket and in the trip record, and buying a ticket without intending to fly all the flights in order to obtain a lower fare is listed among its prohibited booking practices. [3]
