How to get a United MileagePlus Premier status match

United MileagePlus Premier Status Match is United Airlines' offer that gives elite members of other airlines a complimentary Premier tier for 120 days, provided they then earn Premier qualifying flights (PQF) and Premier qualifying points (PQP) to keep it. Applications for the 2026 edition run from January 8 to December 21, 2026, and the trial clock starts with an activating flight on United or United Express. [1]

Key takeaways

  • The 2026 MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge accepts applications from January 8 to December 21, 2026, and starts with 120 days of complimentary Premier status from an activating flight. [1]
  • Approval takes up to 14 business days, and the activating flight must be flown within 90 days of approval on a United or United Express ticket that earns Premier qualifying credits. [1]
  • Keeping the tier requires both PQF and PQP inside the 120-day Challenge Period; spending on an eligible United Chase card can supply part of the PQP. [1]
  • Matched status expires when the Challenge Period ends unless the target is met, and the offer cannot lift a member above the tier United maps them to. [1]

Who is eligible for a United Premier status match?

An applicant has to be an authenticated MileagePlus member, hold an active account with an eligible airline, and hold an eligible elite level that is valid for the current calendar year. [1] That competitor status has to be earned: United accepts members who qualified for their current level by meeting the other airline's published criteria, or who hold a lifetime status award, but not members whose level comes from a trial, temporary or promotional offer. [1]

Two waiting periods apply. The offer is not valid for anyone who has taken part in the MileagePlus Status Match programme in the past three years, or who has received a Premier Status Exception in the past five years. [1] United also says a request will not be granted if the member already holds equivalent or higher status in MileagePlus, and that members who have just enrolled and have not yet authenticated their account may not be eligible. [1]

Applying means filling in the request form and uploading proof of current airline status. [1] United says it will say within 14 business days whether the request is approved, and it reserves the right to ask for supplemental documentation to decide eligibility. [1] The offer page lists the airlines and tiers it accepts, among them Delta Air Lines SkyMiles Medallion tiers, American Airlines AAdvantage tiers, British Airways Executive Club Bronze, Silver and Gold, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Alaska-Hawaiian Atmos Rewards, Emirates Skywards, Qantas Frequent Flyer, Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards A-List and A-List Preferred, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. [1]

How does the activating flight and the 120-day trial work?

Matched status is not switched on at approval. The member first takes an activating flight: a flight operated by United or United Express, completed within 90 days after the submitted documentation is approved, and posted to the MileagePlus account. [1] Flights on tickets that do not earn Premier qualifying credits do not satisfy this step. [1] A member who misses the window is no longer eligible for the offer and cannot submit again in the same calendar year. [1]

There is one alternative route in. When documents are submitted, a member can declare a United or United Express flight taken in the previous 30 days that has already posted and carries a flight date on or after January 1, 2026; United reviews that once and, if the member is eligible, treats it as the activating flight, using the earliest qualifying flight when there is more than one. [1]

The tier granted mirrors the level held in the competitor programme and is one of Premier Silver, Premier Gold, Premier Platinum or Premier 1K. [1] It takes effect within five to seven business days of the activating flight and lasts 120 days from that flight's date — the Challenge Period. [1] No Premier membership materials are issued for the Challenge Period: benefits on United- and United Express-operated flights come from giving the MileagePlus number at booking or check-in, and access to all reciprocal Premier benefits with partner airlines, including Star Alliance lounges, may not be available. [1]

What do you have to fly or spend to keep the matched status?

Keeping the tier for the rest of the programme year takes two separate earnings inside the same 120 days: a set number of PQF on United or United Express, and a set number of PQP from United or United Express flying or from purchases on an eligible United Chase credit card. [1] United says those two targets depend on the tier matched and are set out in the offer's programme details. [1]

United also sets out which activity feeds the two targets. [1]

What counts toward the challenge requirements
ItemCounts as
Flights operated by United or United Express, posted to the MileagePlus accountPQF and PQP [1]
Base fare and carrier-imposed surchargesPQP [1]
United or United Express travel on award tickets, or paid with Money + MilesPQF and PQP [1]
Economy Plus seating, preferred seat purchases, MileagePlus Upgrade Award co-pays and paid upgradesPQP [1]
Purchases on an eligible United Chase card, primary cardmember only, posted from the activating flight date to the last day of the Challenge PeriodPQP [1]
Basic Economy and base fare ticketsPQP but no PQF [1]
United-marketed codeshare flights operated by another carrierNeither [1]
Economy Plus subscriptions, promotional PQF or PQP, PQP converted from other currencies, credit card PQF or promotional credit card PQPNeither [1]

Two details catch people out. Because Basic Economy and base fare tickets earn PQP but no PQF, a challenge flown entirely on those fares cannot clear a PQF requirement. [1] And points and flights earned on the activating flight itself do count toward the challenge. [1]

United separately publishes standard qualification thresholds for Premier status. For the 2026 qualification year, which runs from January 1 to December 31, they are: [2]

Published Premier qualification thresholds, 2026 qualification year
Premier tierPQF with PQPPQP only
Premier Silver15 PQF and 5,000 PQP6,000 PQP
Premier Gold30 PQF and 10,000 PQP12,000 PQP
Premier Platinum45 PQF and 15,000 PQP18,000 PQP
Premier 1K60 PQF and 22,000 PQP28,000 PQP

The standard path also requires at least four paid flight segments on United or United Express during the qualification year. [2] The offer itself cannot take a member above the tier United matched, even with surplus flying; reaching a published threshold is the route to a higher level. [1] See elite qualification thresholds for how these targets compare across programmes.

What happens when the challenge ends?

When the Challenge Period closes, the result is binary. A member who meets both targets has Premier status confirmed, with the account updated within five to seven business days of the requirement being completed and posted. [1] Premier status earned through the offer in 2026 is valid through January 2028, and through January 2029 for members who earn it on or after January 1, 2027. [1] Reaching Premier Platinum through the challenge brings 20 PlusPoints and Premier 1K brings 100 PlusPoints, credited within 7 to 10 business days, while the matched status on its own brings none. [1]

A member who falls short loses the trial tier. Matched status expires at the end of the Challenge Period unless the matched level or a higher one has been earned or awarded, and the account may return to a lower earned Premier level or to general member status at United's discretion. [1] The same can happen if a member asks to have United flight activity removed from the account in a way that breaks the requirement. [1]

Exceptions and limits

  • United can withdraw a matched status after an audit or investigation. Listed grounds include altered documentation, documentation for a Premier level or airline the member does not hold, false contact information, a deliberate change to the spelling of the member's name after registering for the offer, submission through a broker or agency, and merging MileagePlus accounts where both had a status match in the past three years. [1]
  • Only flights operated by United and United Express count toward the offer; United-marketed codeshare flights operated by other carriers are excluded. [1]
  • MileagePlus permits one account per person and says duplicate accounts are subject to cancellation, so a second account cannot be used to run a fresh attempt. [4]
  • Premier benefits depend on the status held at the time of travel, not at the time the ticket was booked. [4]
  • United may change or end the MileagePlus programme, its rules, benefits and Premier qualification criteria at any time with or without notice, and accumulated status does not create vested rights. [4]
  • Claims that mileage or Premier Qualifying Credits were not credited must reach United within 12 months of the date the credit was earned. [4]
  • The status match offer is itself subject to change without notice and to other restrictions. [1]

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply if I already hold United Premier status?

Not for the same or a lower tier. United says a request that otherwise meets the criteria will not receive status if the member already holds equivalent or higher status in MileagePlus. [1]

Does the 120-day Premier status include partner lounge access?

Not necessarily. During the Challenge Period the matched tier works on United- and United Express-operated flights, and United warns that not all reciprocal Premier benefits with its partners, including Star Alliance lounge access, may be available. [1]

What happens if I miss the activating flight deadline?

The member stops being eligible for the offer and cannot submit another Premier status match request in the same calendar year. [1]

Can a household member's card spending help me qualify?

No. Only the primary cardmember earns PQP from eligible United Chase card purchases, and those points must post between the activating flight and the end of the Challenge Period. [1]

How long does the whole process take?

United says approval or rejection of the request comes within 14 business days, the matched tier starts within five to seven business days of the activating flight, and confirmation after meeting the target is also updated within five to seven business days. [1]
