How to use United MileagePlus upgrades
United MileagePlus upgrades are the cabin-upgrade benefits offered inside United Airlines' MileagePlus programme, and the programme rules list upgrade benefits as one of the benefits attached to Premier status rather than as a guaranteed entitlement. What do MileagePlus upgrade benefits cover?
United's rules place upgrade benefits alongside bonus miles, Premier Access and baggage allowance in the list of benefits associated with Premier status. [5] Because those benefits are attached to the account, a member has to keep the MileagePlus number on the reservation throughout the original booking and any later reservation created from it, and for the whole duration of the associated travel. [5] If a companion gets a benefit from the member's status and the member stops travelling on the original reservation, the companion is no longer eligible for those benefits. [5]
The rules also give United room to change what a status level provides: members may not rely on the continued availability of Premier benefits or of any award, and United may withdraw, limit, modify or cancel an award, increase the miles, cash or co-pays required, or limit the number of award seats available. How does Premier status decide upgrade benefits?
Status on the travel date is the deciding factor, so a member who earns or loses Premier status between booking and departure is assessed on the status held when flying. [5] The four ordinary Premier levels are Premier Silver, Premier Gold, Premier Platinum and Premier 1K. [7] For the 2026 qualification year, which runs from 1 January to 31 December, the published thresholds are:

Premier qualifying points (PQP) and PQF are the two credits used for these thresholds, and United also applies a minimum of four paid flight segments on United or United Express. [7] Basic Economy and base fare tickets earn PQP but not PQF. [7] Premier status earned in 2026 is valid through 31 January 2028. [7]
Which upgrade instruments do the MileagePlus rules name?
PlusPoints are treated as a balance in a MileagePlus account, and a member must tell United promptly if a PlusPoints balance is credited in error; using an erroneously credited balance counts as a breach of the programme rules. Which fares and tickets cannot be upgraded?

[5] Award tickets, awards, certificates and seat upgrades may be subject to departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other charges, and the person using the upgrade is responsible for paying them. [5] Award travel, including tickets paid with a combination of miles and money, does not earn award miles or Premier Qualifying Credits. Exceptions and limits
- No guaranteed availability. Members may not rely on the continued availability of a status benefit or an award, and United may change benefits, conditions of participation or mileage levels at any time, with or without notice, even where the change affects the value of status or certificates already accumulated. - Matched status is temporary. Premier status granted through the 2026 Status Match Challenge, with applications open from 8 January to 21 December 2026, lasts 120 days from the activating flight. [6] During that period members may not have access to all reciprocal Premier benefits with United's partners, including Star Alliance lounges, and benefits on United- or United Express-operated flights are obtained by giving the account number at booking or check-in. - Not every PQP counts towards the challenge. PQP from Economy Plus subscriptions, promotional PQF or PQP, conversion of other currencies, and credit card PQF or promotional credit card PQP do not count, and only the primary cardmember earns PQP from card purchases. [6]
- Upgrades do not lift earning. Class-of-service bonus miles and Premier Qualifying Credits, if any, are credited according to the fare paid rather than the cabin flown, and are not credited on an upgrade. [5]
