Loyalty promotions: check registration, eligibility and dates

A headline bonus is not the full offer. Check when to register, what booking qualifies, when the activity must happen and whether the bonus counts toward status.

Separate registration, booking and activity dates

  • Registration window: when must you enrol or enter a code? Does the account show a successful registration?
  • Booking window: when must the ticket be issued, the stay reserved or the purchase made? The trip or stay can have a separate travel window.
  • Activity window: when must the flight, stay or purchase actually occur? Does the offer use the departure, checkout, transaction or posting date?

Record the dates separately. Do not treat an activity, posting and purchase date as interchangeable.

Check six conditions

  1. Who may participate? The offer may be account-, country-, tier-, cardholder- or invitation-specific.
  2. Was registration required? AAdvantage says eligible Loyalty Points for an offer generally must accrue after registration unless the offer states otherwise. Marriott says most promotions require manual registration before completing a qualifying stay.
  3. Which channel and fare? Direct, authorized-agency, corporate, OTA, award and basic-economy bookings can have different rules.
  4. Which route or property? The operator, marketing carrier, property brand, route, room type or named partner may affect eligibility.
  5. What reward is awarded? Redeemable miles, Loyalty Points, status nights, certificates and status benefits are separate. Bonus miles may not count toward elite qualification.
  6. What limits apply? Check activity caps, maximum rewards, cancellations, duplicate bookings, claim deadlines and posting time.

Keep proof before you book

  1. Save the offer page, complete terms and registration confirmation, with the date you checked them.
  2. Mark the sign-up deadline, booking deadline, travel or stay window and posting cutoff.
  3. Confirm your member number, name, fare, booking channel and participating account.
  4. Separate the redeemable bonus from status progress in your calculation.
  5. Compare the total price with the trip you would have booked anyway; do not spend more or book unwanted travel for a bonus.
  6. After the trip, retain the receipt and boarding pass or hotel folio until the credit appears.
