FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is alliance status recognition?

Alliance status recognition is the practice by which an airline alliance extends the elite benefits of one member airline's frequent flyer programme to travel on the alliance's other member airlines. Star Alliance, whose published pages are the sources for this term, describes Star Alliance Gold and Star Alliance Silver as tier levels recognised across all of its member carriers, so that a single status is recognised equally across its network. [1] [5]

Key takeaways

  • Star Alliance recognises two alliance tiers, Gold and Silver, across all of its member carriers, while each member airline defines its own programme tiers and decides which of them equate to Gold or Silver. [1] [5]
  • Recognition is a published list of airport and reservation benefits rather than one rulebook: the Gold list covers priority check-in, priority boarding where available, an extra baggage allowance, lounge access, Gold Track and priority baggage delivery, while the Silver list covers priority waitlisting and priority standby where the law allows. [1] [5]
  • The member carrier and the flight still decide the detail: the extra allowance is 20 kg (44 pounds) or one additional piece depending on the airline's baggage policy, and the benefits apply when travelling on eligible Star Alliance flights. [1]
  • Status does not move between programmes, because Star Alliance says its frequent flyer programmes are operated independently by the member airlines and that Gold status cannot be transferred to another programme. [1] [5]

What alliance-wide recognition covers

Star Alliance presents the idea as one status recognised equally across its network, earned in any of the frequent flyer programmes offered by its 26 member airlines. [1] The same page counts 19 frequent flyer programmes across those airlines. [1]

At Gold level the published list reaches both the reservation and the airport: priority waitlisting when the preferred cabin is full and a reservation is possible, priority airport standby for a preferred flight when plans change and flights are full, priority check-in, priority boarding where available, priority baggage delivery, an extra baggage allowance, worldwide lounge access with some restrictions, and Gold Track lanes for security and immigration. [1] [5]

At Silver level the alliance publishes only two benefits: priority waitlisting, and priority airport standby where the law allows it. [1] [5]

The scale given for the lounge benefit is more than 1,000 airport lounges worldwide, including six Star Alliance lounges, when flying with any Star Alliance member airline. [1] For baggage, the allowance is either 20 kg (44 pounds) or an additional piece of luggage, depending on the airline's baggage policy, and the alliance marks the baggage, waitlist and standby benefits as subject to individual member carrier fare conditions and legal regulations. [1]

Some benefits are delivered locally and are named accordingly. Star Alliance says the naming and availability of Gold Track lanes may vary by airport, and that priority check-in is available at selected participating airports and member airlines. [1] The benefits page also carries a non-airline arrangement: Gold members and one companion receive a complimentary upgrade to PREMIER+ on Heathrow Express after buying a PREMIER+ single or return ticket and showing the frequent flyer programme card on board when requested. [1]

Where member rules still decide

Qualification sits with the programme, not the alliance: each member airline defines its own tier status levels, which equate to Star Alliance Gold and Silver, and the airline's own programme pages hold the requirements. [1] [5] When the programme status matches the alliance level, the member's frequent flyer card shows the respective Star Alliance Gold or Silver logo. [1] [5]

The flight matters too. The alliance states that the benefits are available when travelling on eligible Star Alliance flights, and it describes priority airport standby as excluding award ticket bookings. [1] For priority waitlisting, the higher position applies when a reservation is possible. [1]

Recognition is also handled at the counter rather than automatically resolved. Star Alliance suggests that members carry their frequent flyer programme membership card while travelling, and, if a status is not recognised by another member airline, contact that airline's frequent flyer programme after the flight for assistance. [1] [5]

Exceptions and limits

  • No transfer of status. Star Alliance answers directly that Gold status cannot be transferred to another programme, because the frequent flyer programmes within the alliance are operated independently by the member airlines. [1] [5]
  • Earning and redeeming miles across member airlines. The alliance describes earning and redeeming miles across member airlines as part of its network offer. [4] [1]
  • Tier gaps. The Silver list is limited to priority waitlisting and priority standby, so the check-in, boarding, baggage, lounge and Gold Track benefits described above are published for Gold only. [1]
  • Flight and carrier conditions. The extra baggage allowance, priority waitlisting and priority standby carry the alliance's own caveat that they are subject to individual member carrier fare conditions and legal regulations. [1]
  • Codeshare journeys.
  • Changing membership. The alliance states 26 member airlines, and the alliance's news list carries an item dated 23 June 2026 headed "Asiana Airlines to Exit Star Alliance" alongside one dated 31 March 2026 headed "ITA Airways Joins Star Alliance". [1] [4]
