FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is priority check-in?

Priority check-in is a dedicated check-in queue or desk that an airline sets aside for eligible elite members and premium-cabin passengers, so they can hand over hold bags and collect a boarding pass without joining the main queue. United Airlines refers to its priority airport service as Premier Access and lists it among the benefits attached to MileagePlus Premier status. [6]

Key takeaways

  • Priority check-in separates eligible travellers from the main check-in queue; eligibility usually follows the cabin booked or the elite tier held in the operating airline's programme.
  • United lists Premier Access among the benefits associated with MileagePlus Premier status, and Premier benefits are based on the status held at the time of travel rather than at the time of booking. [6]
  • United requires the MileagePlus number to stay on the reservation for programme benefits at check-in to apply. [6]

How does priority check-in work?

Check-in is the step where a traveller confirms the booking, drops hold baggage and receives a boarding pass. Priority check-in moves that step out of the main queue: the eligible traveller joins a shorter line or walks up to a reserved desk, and the agent works through the same booking and travel documents as at any other counter. What changes is where the queue is, not what check-in involves.

Eligibility usually comes from one of two places — the cabin booked on the ticket, or the tier held in the loyalty programme of the airline operating the flight. Because terminals differ in size and layout, the physical arrangement varies too: some locations have a separate desk, others a marked lane, and others one premium queue shared by several eligible groups. Whether a dedicated facility exists at a given airport depends on that airport, so the service cannot be assumed at every departure point.

For airlines that publish airport benefits, check-in is normally named alongside lounges, baggage and seating as one of the moments where status is recognised. United's MileagePlus rules, for example, refer to "benefits at time of booking, check-in, travel or other activity in which Program benefits are provided" and tie those benefits to keeping the account number attached to the reservation. [6]

How does United MileagePlus handle it?

United Airlines includes Premier Access in the list of benefits associated with Premier status in its MileagePlus rules, alongside bonus miles, baggage allowance and upgrade benefits. [6] Three conditions in those rules matter for anyone planning to use the airport side of status.

Timing. Premier benefits are based on the member's Premier status at the time of travel, not at the time the air travel was purchased, booked or reserved. [6] A member whose tier changes between booking and departure is therefore judged on the tier held on the day of the flight.

Booking. Members receiving benefits at booking, check-in, travel or any other activity where programme benefits are provided must keep their MileagePlus account number on the reservation, on any reservations created from it, and for the whole duration of the original and later travel. [6] If the number is not on the booking, the airport benefit does not follow the traveller.

Companions. Where a companion receives a benefit because of a member's status, and that member is no longer travelling on the original reservation, the companion on the original reservation stops being eligible for the Premier and other benefits obtained through the member's status. [6] The benefit runs with the member's presence on the booking, not with the booking alone.

Does priority check-in apply on partner-operated flights?

Airport benefits are also limited by who operates the flight. Under the terms for applications submitted between January 8 and December 21, 2026 for the MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge, a matched member can enjoy Premier benefits on flights operated by United or United Express by giving the MileagePlus account number when making the reservation or at check-in. [7] The activating flight that starts the offer must also be operated by United or United Express and completed within 90 days of approval. [7]

During the 120-day Challenge Period that begins on the date of the activating flight, matched members may not have access to all reciprocal Premier benefits with United's partners, including access to Star Alliance lounges, and Premier membership materials are not issued for that period. [7] Those limits describe matched status inside a fixed offer window; they are not a description of how Premier status behaves for members who earned it. United's programme rules separately reserve the right to withdraw, limit or modify the benefits attached to Premier status at any time, with or without notice. [6]

Exceptions and limits

  • Benefits are not guaranteed. United's rules state that members may not rely on the continued availability of the benefits associated with a Premier status level, and that United may modify Premier benefits at any time, with or without notice. [6]
  • Airport variation. The shape of the service — separate desk, marked lane or shared premium queue — depends on the individual airport, so a member should expect differences between departure points.
  • Account number required. Programme benefits at check-in depend on the MileagePlus number remaining on the reservation throughout the trip. [6]
  • Companion limits. Companion benefits obtained through a member's status end if that member is no longer travelling on the original reservation. [6]
  • Matched status. Premier benefits for matched members are tied to United- or United Express-operated flights, and reciprocal partner access may be reduced during the Challenge Period. [7]
  • Misuse. Prohibited conduct, including misuse of the programme or misrepresentation of information, can lead to loss of other programme benefits among United's remedies. [6]

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a membership card at priority check-in?

United's rules require the MileagePlus number to stay on the reservation for programme benefits to apply. [6] Members matched through the 2026 Status Match Challenge use Premier benefits by providing their account number when booking or at check-in, and no Premier membership materials are issued during the Challenge Period. [7]

Is priority check-in based on the status held when booking or on the day of travel?

At United, benefits associated with Premier status are based on the member's status at the time of travel, not at the time the ticket was purchased, booked or reserved. [6]

Can someone travelling with me use priority check-in too?

United's rules say that a companion who obtained a benefit through a member's status stops being eligible for those benefits if the member is no longer travelling on the original reservation. [6]

Does priority check-in work on partner airlines?

For matched Premier status during the 2026 Status Match Challenge, Premier benefits are available on flights operated by United or United Express, and access to reciprocal partner benefits may be limited for the 120-day Challenge Period. [7]
