FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a travel voucher?

Travel voucher (also airline voucher or flight voucher) is value issued by an airline that can be put toward a future booking instead of being returned as cash. American Airlines counts a ticket paid in full or in part with an American-issued voucher as earning AAdvantage miles on the whole base fare and carrier-imposed fees. [5]

Key takeaways

  • A travel voucher is stored value held with an airline and spent on a future ticket; it is not money returned to the card used for the original purchase.
  • American Airlines gives full mileage credit for the base fare and carrier-imposed fees on tickets paid in full or in part with American-issued vouchers. [5]
  • On American, the fare type still decides whether a ticket earns: some ticket types earn no AAdvantage miles whatever payment method is used. [5]
  • When an AAdvantage award trip is cancelled, miles return to the account and eligible taxes and fees are refunded to the original credit card. [4]

What is a travel voucher?

A travel voucher is a record of value held with an airline. It normally carries an identifying number or code, is issued for a set amount, and is applied at the payment stage of a booking — by the traveller online, or through a reservations agent. Because it is not a payment card, the balance cannot be spent anywhere else: it can only be used with the airline, or group of airlines, that issued it.

Vouchers are typically issued where a cash refund is not due, or as a goodwill gesture after a disruption, rather than as a routine way to pay for flights. The amount, the person entitled to use it, what it may be spent on and how long it stays valid are decided by the issuing airline and written into the terms attached to that individual voucher, so two vouchers from the same airline can behave quite differently.

A voucher is close to, but not identical with, other forms of airline credit. A voucher is usually a separate instrument with its own reference, while a credit is often a balance tied to a particular booking or to the passenger's profile. The words are used loosely in practice, and the conditions attached to the document matter more than the label on it.

Voucher, refund or travel credit: what is the difference?

A refund returns money to the payment method used for the original purchase. A voucher replaces that money with value that must be spent with the airline. Whether a traveller gets one or the other depends on the fare rules, the reason the trip was cancelled and the consumer law that applies to the ticket, and the two are not interchangeable.

American Airlines sets out the split for award travel. When an AAdvantage award trip is cancelled, the miles are reinstated to the AAdvantage account they were taken from — even where the new amount is the same — and eligible taxes and fees are refunded to the credit card used for the original booking. [4] American says the miles are reinstated and eligible taxes and fees refunded at no charge up to one year from the date the ticket was purchased, as long as the trip is cancelled before the first flight departs. [4] That is a refund of money to the original card, not a voucher for future travel.

Not every charge comes back. American excludes sale-imposed nonrefundable taxes, taxes it must pay whether or not the traveller flies, and trips that have already started; where a country's rules differ, American says it will follow those local rules. [4]

Does a ticket paid for with a travel voucher still earn miles?

At American Airlines, paying with a voucher does not reduce AAdvantage earning. Tickets paid in full or partially with American-issued vouchers receive full credit for the base fare and carrier-imposed fees associated with the ticket price. [5]

For American-marketed flights, miles are calculated on the ticket price, which includes the base fare and carrier-imposed fees but excludes government-imposed taxes and fees. [5] A member without status earns 5 AAdvantage miles per U.S. dollar of that eligible price. [5] Status members earn a bonus on top of the base rate: 40% for AAdvantage Gold, 60% for AAdvantage Platinum, 80% for AAdvantage Platinum Pro and 120% for AAdvantage Executive Platinum. [5] Where a ticket is bought in another currency, the miles are calculated by converting to U.S. dollars at the five-day IATA rate on the date the ticket was issued. [5]

Which tickets earn nothing, even when paid with a voucher?

Earning is governed by the fare, not by the payment method. American lists ticket types that earn no AAdvantage miles regardless of booking code: AAdvantage award tickets, charter flight tickets, companion tickets, infant tickets, items occupying a purchased seat, other free or reduced-rate ticket promotions, tickets bought through a travel agency where the airline is not disclosed before purchase (American names Priceline and Hotwire), tickets issued subject to special provisions, and travel agency or industry reduced-rate tickets. [5]

Basic Economy is treated separately, with a date-based split. Tickets bought on or after 12:01 a.m. CT on 17 December 2025 earn no AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points, while tickets bought on or before 11:59 p.m. CT on 16 December 2025 earn 2 AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points per dollar spent. [5]

These rules describe how American Airlines calculates mileage earning under the AAdvantage programme for American-marketed flights, and they apply alongside the conditions printed on the individual voucher. Whether a particular voucher can be used by someone other than the person it was issued to, and how long it stays valid, are matters set by the issuing airline for that voucher.

Frequently asked questions

Does a ticket paid for with a travel voucher still earn AAdvantage miles?

Yes. American Airlines says tickets paid in full or partially with American-issued vouchers receive full credit for the base fare and carrier-imposed fees when AAdvantage miles are calculated. [5] Earning can still be blocked by the fare type, for example on award tickets, companion tickets or Basic Economy bought from 17 December 2025. [5]

Is a travel voucher the same as a refund?

No. A refund returns money to the original payment method, while a voucher is value that must be spent with the airline. When an AAdvantage award trip is cancelled, American reinstates the miles and refunds eligible taxes and fees to the credit card used for the booking. [4]

Can I get money back if I cancel an AAdvantage award trip?

American refunds eligible taxes and fees to the card used for the original booking, and excludes sale-imposed nonrefundable taxes, taxes it must pay regardless of travel, and trips that have already started. [4] Where a country's rules differ, American says it follows those rules. [4]
