American AAdvantage vs JetBlue TrueBlue: key differences
American Airlines AAdvantage and JetBlue TrueBlue are two airline loyalty programmes with different currencies and elite structures: AAdvantage uses miles and Loyalty Points, while TrueBlue uses points and Tiles. [1] [3] [5] [6] Both use variable award pricing, but American ties the miles needed to availability while JetBlue ties points to the published base fare and timing. [3] [5] This comparison covers AAdvantage under terms effective 1 March 2026 and TrueBlue help pages as of 18 October 2026. [3] [5]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- AAdvantage separates Base Miles, which earn Loyalty Points, from Bonus Miles, which do not, although both can be redeemed. [3]
- TrueBlue Mosaic status is earned through Tiles: 50 for Mosaic 1, 100 for Mosaic 2, 150 for Mosaic 3 and 250 for Mosaic 4. [6]
- American award seats can be booked on any available seat on its own flights, but the miles required can be higher depending on availability; JetBlue's points requirement varies by destination, day, season and booking window. [3] [5]
- JetBlue Cash + Points is available on JetBlue-operated awards but not on partner-operated awards, which require 100% points; American's new cash-and-miles feature is a checkout option on cash bookings. [4] [5]
How do AAdvantage and TrueBlue compare on earning?
Under AAdvantage, eligible purchased tickets earn Base Miles based on ticket price — base fare plus mandatory carrier-imposed fees — while government taxes and fees and optional airline fees do not earn. [3] Some partner-marketed flights or fare types may earn at a percentage of distance flown by booking code, and partner flights may earn Bonus Miles instead of Base Miles. [3] The programme does not allow earning AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points for the same flight under AAdvantage and another loyalty programme. [3] Requests for past credit can be made up to 12 months after the activity, subject to enrollment-date limits for partner flights, American flights and non-flight transactions. [3]
TrueBlue members can buy, gift or transfer points at a cost; those points can be used for awards but do not earn Tiles. [5] On JetBlue-operated flights, Mosaic 1 members earn 3X points, Mosaic 3 members 4X and Mosaic 4 members 5X. [6]
How do AAdvantage elite status and JetBlue Mosaic compare?
AAdvantage status is based on Loyalty Points earned during the 12-month period starting 1 March each year, and status remains valid from the time it is reached through 31 March of the following full year. [3] The terms name ConciergeKey, Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro, Platinum and Gold in their complimentary-upgrade rules, and upgrades may be available on American-marketed and -operated flights within and between the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Bermuda, and between the United States and Central America. [3] Miles from Buy, Gift and Transfer transactions, and conversions from another programme, earn only Bonus Miles, so they do not add Loyalty Points. [3]
TrueBlue uses Tiles for elite qualification. Qualifying spend in the current year counts toward Mosaic for the following year, enough Tiles qualify through the following calendar year, and qualifying spend resets on 1 January. [6]
| Mosaic tier | Tiles required | Selected benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Mosaic 1 | 50 [6] | Free checked bag, free same-day switches on most fares excluding Base fares, and 3X points on JetBlue-operated flights [6] |
| Mosaic 2 | 100 [6] | A second free checked bag and EvenMore seat selection at booking for the member and two companions, subject to availability and excluding Main Base fares [6] |
| Mosaic 3 | 150 [6] | 4X points and four certificates to upgrade a back-cabin booking to Mint or BlueFirst at no extra charge, subject to availability [6] |
| Mosaic 4 | 250 [6] | 5X points, the ability to gift Mosaic 1 status, and BlueHouse entry for the member and an eligible companion [6] |
How do award prices and cash-plus-points work?
American's terms say flight awards on American and American Eagle may be used for any available seat, including the last seat, but the miles required may be higher depending on availability, such as for a last seat. [3] Partner awards may be subject to special seating limits, and the miles required may vary with the partner's availability. [3] A ticketed AAdvantage award ticket must be completed within one year of ticketing unless otherwise noted. [3]
JetBlue points required for an award vary by destination, day of week, season and advance booking window, and are based on the published base fare at the time of booking; some flights need more points and carry higher government taxes or fees. [5] Cash + Points is available on JetBlue-operated awards, while partner-operated awards require a 100% points redemption, and a redemption booking can use no more than two forms of payment. [5]
American's cash and miles booking is shown as a slider at checkout on cash bookings for eligible AAdvantage members on aa.com and the American app, after an optional trip-insurance step; American said in October 2026 that it would roll out in the coming weeks. [4] American's terms also say a transaction purchased or redeemed with a combination of cash and AAdvantage miles may not accrue miles or Loyalty Points unless otherwise stated. [3]
What fees and partner rules apply?
On AAdvantage awards, the passenger is responsible for immigration fees, surcharges, departure fees and taxes, security fees, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other taxes, fees and surcharges, and any additional award-ticket fees are payable by credit card. [3] American award changes or cancellations are free before ticketing, but after ticketing additional miles or fees may apply; wholly unused awards can be reinstated if cancelled before departure and the ticket has not expired, while expired or partially used tickets are not reinstated. [3]
JetBlue lists award taxes and fees as $5.60 one-way and $11.20 roundtrip on domestic awards, and $5.60–$161.50 one-way and $27.60–$171.60 roundtrip on international awards as of 18 October 2026; baggage and other optional fees are extra, and taxes and fees are paid at booking and may change. [5]
American's AAdvantage terms generally do not allow transferring miles to other loyalty programmes, though miles can be moved between AAdvantage accounts through a Transfer Miles transaction. [3] Bought, gifted or transferred AAdvantage miles are Bonus Miles and do not add Loyalty Points. [3] On TrueBlue, bought, gifted or transferred points can be used for award redemptions but do not earn Tiles. [5]
American's programme is linked to the oneworld alliance, and its flight awards are valid only on flights marketed and operated by American or certain AAdvantage partners. [3] Flights to and from Cuba are eligible for AAdvantage earning and redemption only on American-operated flights. [3]
What are the exceptions and limits?
- American may change the AAdvantage terms at any time with or without notice, even if changes affect rewards already accumulated, and it says members have no vested rights; it may end the programme with six months' notice. [3]
- American may treat an account as inactive and terminate it when it has no earning or redeeming activity for at least 36 consecutive months, a zero-mile balance, no co-branded credit card and no lifetime benefit or active status; accounts created within the prior 24 months may be terminated after 12 months without earning or redeeming activity. [3]
- Mosaic Base fares are not eligible for free same-day switches or standby; Main Base and EvenMore Base fares are excluded from complimentary BlueHouse access, and Main Base fares are not eligible for EvenMore upgrades or Preferred Main Seating, though at least one free checked bag, a carry-on and early boarding still apply on Base fares. [6]
- Mosaic benefits extended to others on the same reservation are available only if the Mosaic member checks in with all travellers and completes all segments with them. [6]
- Gifted Mosaic 1 status does not include a Perks You Pick selection, the 5,000-point bonus or the JetBlue Vacations bonus. [6]
