How to get into SFO airport lounges
Whether you can use a lounge before a flight from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) comes down to two things — the cabin you fly in and the frequent flyer status you hold — plus, where a lounge sells it, paid entry bought in advance. [11] [4]

Key takeaways
- Under the Star Alliance lounge access policy, access is decided by your ticket and class of travel or by your frequent flyer status, and you must be departing on a flight operated by a Star Alliance member airline to use a Star Alliance lounge or a member airline lounge at the departure airport. [11]
- Star Alliance Gold customers get in on a Star Alliance flight in any class of travel; Star Alliance Silver customers do not have access to Star Alliance lounges. [11]
- Paid lounge entry is sold without any status or business-class requirement, but only for the lounge you reserved and only when you are flying a Star Alliance member carrier. [4]
- Arrival lounge access is not a Star Alliance benefit at all; arrival lounge questions go to the airline operating your flight. [11]
What decides lounge access at SFO?
Star Alliance states that access to its lounges is determined either by your flight ticket and class of travel or by your frequent flyer status. [11] The same policy adds one condition that applies in every case: you must be departing on a flight operated by a Star Alliance member airline to use a Star Alliance lounge or a Star Alliance member airline lounge at the departure airport. [11]
| Traveller | Access |
|---|---|
| International First or Business Class customer | Access when travelling in First or Business [11] |
| Star Alliance Gold customer | Access on a Star Alliance flight in any class of travel [11] |
| Star Alliance Silver customer | No access [11] |
| Paid lounge entry customer | Access to the reserved lounge only, when flying a Star Alliance member carrier [4] |
Star Alliance counts more than 1,000 member airline lounges worldwide, plus many more contract lounges run by third parties for its member airlines, and six dedicated Star Alliance branded lounges of its own. [11] Its Lounge Finder is the tool the alliance publishes for checking which departure lounges are available at a given airport. [11] United is one of the member carriers listed in that tool. [11]
Does Star Alliance Gold status get you into lounges?
Yes, on the alliance’s terms: Star Alliance Gold customers have access to Star Alliance lounges when travelling on a Star Alliance flight in any class of travel, while Star Alliance Silver customers do not have access. [11] Cabin eligibility is separate — International First and Business Class customers have access when travelling in First and Business. [11]
Guests follow their own rule. International First, Star Alliance Gold and eligible paid lounge membership customers are entitled to one guest, the guest must enter the designated lounge with the eligible customer, and the guest must present a boarding pass for a Star Alliance flight departing from the local airport. [11]
Connecting itineraries extend this. A Gold customer travelling on a connecting itinerary — a direct connection between a Star Alliance member airline flight and a flight operated by a Connecting Partner, held in the same reservation — has access to Star Alliance member owned lounges, Star Alliance branded lounges, Connecting Partner lounges and lounges contracted by the Connecting Partner. [11]
Can you buy lounge access at SFO?
Star Alliance sells paid lounge entry through a reservation website, and buying it requires no frequent flyer status and no business class ticket. [4] You do have to be flying on a Star Alliance member carrier flight, and you may enter only the lounge you made the reservation for. [4]
At the door you present the reservation alongside a valid boarding pass for the same day of travel, and identification may be requested at any time. [4] A reservation can cover up to nine people including yourself, the person booking must be at least 18, and any guests are admitted only in the presence of the person named on the reservation. [4] The booking provides for a maximum three-hour stay unless the access document or the lounge indicates otherwise, some lounges restrict the times at which access can be bought, and child access policies differ between lounges. [4] Taxes and service fees are included in the price shown. [4] First name, last name, email address, flight number and comments can be edited afterwards; the date and time cannot, so a change means cancelling and booking again. [4]
What does an Admirals Club membership cover?
American Airlines lists complimentary snacks, house drinks, made-to-order specialties at select locations, personal travel assistance, shower suites at select locations and a business center at select locations among Admirals Club amenities, and notes that premium food and drink menus differ by lounge. [8] One-Day Pass access to Admirals Club lounges may be limited or not available depending on lounge capacity. [8]
American describes the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Legend Mastercard as the only card with Admirals Club membership, and lists priority check-in, screening and boarding when flying with American Airlines among the airport benefits that come with it. [8]
Exceptions and limits
- Silver status is a hard stop for the alliance: Star Alliance Silver customers do not have access to Star Alliance lounges. [11]
- Arrival lounge access is not a Star Alliance benefit, and arrival lounge information has to come from the airline operating your flight. [11] The Lounge Finder covers departure lounges only, and lounges operated by Connecting Partners are not included in it. [11]
- Paid entry is fully refunded where the reservation is cancelled more than 24 hours before the estimated time of entry because the flight was cancelled or delayed by more than four hours; where the reservation is not cancelled, or the flight is not cancelled or delayed by more than four hours, it is not refunded. [4] Where access was bought less than 24 hours before entry and the flight was cancelled or delayed by more than four hours, the refund is partial and excludes a service fee of 5% of the total transaction. [4]
- Each lounge keeps its own entry terms, including dress code and conduct, which apply on top of the reservation. [4]
