AAdvantage vs Atmos Rewards: status, earning and awards

American AAdvantage is the frequent flyer programme offered by American Airlines, and Alaska Atmos Rewards is the loyalty programme for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. [1] [5] [8] Both run elite tiers and let members book award flights, but they build status differently: AAdvantage tiers come from Loyalty Points earned in a 12-month period that starts every 1 March [5], while Atmos Rewards members choose to earn points and status points by distance travelled, price paid or segments flown on flights departing on or after 1 January 2027. [6] [8]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • AAdvantage status runs on Loyalty Points: Base Miles earn them, while Bonus Miles from Buy, Gift or Transfer Miles transactions, promotional offers or converting another programme's currency do not. [5]
  • Atmos Rewards opened a choice of three flight-earning methods on 1 October 2026, applying to flights departing on or after 1 January 2027, and the choice can be changed once per calendar year for future travel only. [6] [8]
  • AAdvantage ties free checked bags to status, and those bags apply on itineraries marketed and operated by American Airlines. [1] American's terms also describe a complimentary upgrade for one companion travelling on the same flight as a status benefit. [5] Separately, Atmos Rewards Platinum and Titanium members gain a Premium Class companion benefit from 2 November. [8]

How do you earn miles or points on partner flights?

Under the AAdvantage terms effective 1 March 2026, an eligible purchased ticket normally earns Base Miles, and therefore Loyalty Points, based on ticket price — base fare plus any mandatory carrier-imposed fees — while government taxes and fees and optional fees such as change and ticketing fees earn nothing. [5] Some flights marketed by airline partners, and some fare types such as consolidator, bulk or student tickets where the fare is not disclosed, may instead earn a percentage of distance flown set by the booking code. [5] American states that eligibility to accrue on partner airline routes can change with or without notice, and that unless it says otherwise the same flight cannot earn under both AAdvantage and another loyalty programme. [5]

Atmos Rewards puts the choice in the member's hands: the selected method applies to all Alaska, Hawaiian and partner flights, while credit card and partner earning stays as it is today. [6] Choosing is optional, and a current member who does not select a method keeps earning by distance travelled. [6] [8] Alaska's 7 October 2026 announcement also states that booking a partner flight directly with Alaska or Hawaiian earns 100% of the points for the miles flown, and that Business Class fares earn 250% of the distance flown with all partners. [7] The partner line-up includes oneworld airlines and more than 30 global airline partners serving over 1,100 destinations. [8]

How does elite status work in AAdvantage and Atmos Rewards?

The AAdvantage tiers named on American's status page are ConciergeKey, Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro, Platinum and Gold. [1] Members qualify on Loyalty Points earned during the 12-month period starting on 1 March each year, and status membership is valid from the time status is reached through 31 March of the following full year. [5] Not every mile counts: Base Miles earn Loyalty Points, while Bonus Miles — including miles from Buy, Gift and Transfer Miles transactions, promotional offers and converting another programme's currency into AAdvantage miles — do not. [5] Status sets boarding order, with Executive Platinum in Group 1, Platinum Pro and oneworld Emerald in Group 2, Platinum and oneworld Sapphire in Group 3, and Gold and oneworld Ruby in Group 4. [1] Status members also get priority check-in and priority security lanes at select airports. [1]

On the Atmos Rewards side, the three-method choice covers points and status points on flights. [6] Status points also come from everyday spending: Alaska describes the Atmos Rewards Summit card as one of the fastest ways to earn enhanced status, with status points earned through card spend and accelerated earn on international purchases. [8] The programme's material names Platinum and Titanium among its tiers, with Titanium members getting a dedicated check-in facility in Seattle and a Titanium-only offer of global upgrades to Alaska's premium cabins. [8] Bonus status points for international travel appear among the perks attached to its Communities. [8] For more detail, see the Atmos Rewards elite status guide and AAdvantage status.

How do award redemptions compare?

AAdvantage flight awards are one-way unless otherwise noted, and certain special awards require round-trip travel. [5] A one-way award within the United States or Canada is limited to three segments, and awards to other destinations, including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, to four. [5] On American and American Eagle flights an award can be booked for any available seat, including the last one, though the miles needed may be higher when availability is tight; partner awards can face separate seating limits and mileage that varies with the partner's availability. [5] Award travel must be completed within one year of ticketing, and changes or cancellations after ticketing can require additional miles or fees. [5] Wholly unused awards cancelled before departure are normally reinstated if the ticket has not expired, while expired tickets and partially used awards are not. [5] Award tickets can be issued in any name designated at ticketing and carry no cash value, and taxes, fees and surcharges remain the passenger's responsibility. [5]

Atmos Rewards award searches run on alaskaair.com or hawaiianairlines.com by selecting "use points", and discounted award fares show up in the results. [7] A published example is the October 2026 Global Getaways offer, which required booking by 10 October 2026 for travel between 15 January and 8 March 2027: one-way awards started at 20,000 points to Seoul, 25,000 to Helsinki, Munich and Paris, and 30,000 to Sapporo and Stavanger. [7] Those prices applied only to that offer's booking window and travel dates. [7]

What companion benefits does each programme offer?

Certain AAdvantage status members may receive a complimentary upgrade for one companion travelling on the same flight, and American asks members with more than two passengers in the reservation to contact it to request the upgrade for themselves and a companion. [5] Free checked bags apply to the member and guests on the same reservation, excluding group reservations, on itineraries marketed and operated by American Airlines, and may not apply to codeshare flights not operated by American. [1] The number of free bags follows the member's highest status level at ticketing or check-in, and American sets out which record applies when the two differ. [1]

From 2 November, Atmos Rewards Platinum and Titanium members can bring eligible children and one companion into Premium Class on a complimentary basis when space is available. [8] Its six Communities offer benefits ranging from free bags, exclusive flight deals and bonus-point challenges to tailored perks such as award-flight discounts for children and bonus status points for international travel. [8] Atmos Rewards Visa credit cards are described separately as providing travel benefits such as free checked bags, preferred boarding and companion benefits. [8]

Which programme is more useful on the West Coast?

Atmos Rewards serves Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, part of Alaska Air Group, which has hubs in Seattle, Honolulu, Portland, Anchorage, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco and flies to more than 140 destinations across North America, Latin America, Asia, the Pacific and Europe. [8] Alaska and Hawaiian are oneworld members, and Atmos Rewards members can earn and redeem points with oneworld airlines and additional global partners serving over 1,100 destinations. [8] Alaska describes the programme as bringing together its deep West Coast customer base with Hawaiian's presence in Hawaiʻi and across the Pacific. [8]

AAdvantage benefits documented on American's own pages depend on who markets and operates the flight: free checked bags, for example, apply on itineraries marketed and operated by American Airlines and may not apply to codeshare flights not operated by American. [1] American also states that services and benefits available through oneworld or other AAdvantage partners are subject to change with or without notice. [5] The two carriers' relationship is in motion: a 29 September 2026 item on Alaska's newsroom says American Airlines and Alaska Airlines announced plans for Alaska to join the Atlantic and Pacific joint businesses. [8]

Exceptions and limits

  • The Atmos Rewards earning choice opened on 1 October 2026 and applies only to flights departing on or after 1 January 2027; a member who joins on or after 1 January 2027 defaults to earning by price paid unless another method is selected. [6] [8]
  • The choice can be changed once per calendar year and never applies to travel already completed; it covers flight points and status points, while credit card and partner earning is unaffected. [6]
  • American may change the AAdvantage programme, including rules, awards and offers, at any time with or without notice, and states that changes may affect the value of rewards already accumulated. [5]
  • AAdvantage award limits depend on region and carrier: three segments for a one-way award within the United States or Canada and four elsewhere, partner awards subject to the partner's own availability, and flights to and from Cuba redeemable only on American-operated flights. [5]
  • The Atmos Rewards Premium Class companion benefit begins on 2 November and applies only when space is available. [8]
