Business-Class Award Programs Compared
Business-class award programmes are the mileage schemes a member spends miles with to sit in a business-class seat, and the differences between them show up less in the cabin than in what each programme publishes: how the mileage price is set, whether partner airlines appear in the same search, how taxes and fees are handled, and which trips can be booked or changed online. [1] [3]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- The programmes checked publish different levels of price detail. Emirates Skywards shows a Classic Rewards starting figure of 5,000 miles and prices upgrades separately from 7,020 miles [3], while the American page checked describes where awards can be booked but sets out no business-class price table [1].
- Partner flights sit inside the normal search at American: partner airline flights are included in award results and can be filtered on the 'Choose flights' screen [1]. Emirates directs readers to separate FAQs for flydubai and other airline partner rewards [3].
- Taxes are handled differently. American refunds all taxes and fees on a cancelled award except three listed categories [1]; Emirates describes the miles as paying the full ticket cost, excluding taxes [3].
- Qatar Airways' rules cover Avios shared between Privilege Club and British Airways Executive Club accounts: Avios move 1:1, free, in either direction, and can be spent from either account without being moved first [4].
What each programme publishes about price
Emirates Skywards. Classic Rewards lets a member book flights to any Emirates or flydubai destination in any class using miles when booking online, starting from 5,000 miles, with the miles paying the full cost of the ticket excluding taxes and a choice of Saver and Flex Plus fares; round-trip and one-way rewards are both available [3]. The page does not say which cabin the 5,000-mile starting figure applies to [3]. Upgrades are priced separately, from 7,020 Skywards Miles, covering Economy to Premium Economy, Economy to Business, Premium Economy to Business and Business to First [3].
Emirates ties the upgrade price to the fare brand bought. Special fares are not eligible for upgrades; Saver fares can only be upgraded at online check-in between 48 and 6 hours before departure and need more miles than Flex and Flex+; Flex needs fewer miles than Saver, and Flex+ fewer still [3]. When booking, a member can see whether the fare is upgradeable immediately or only later, and exactly how many miles are needed [3].
American AAdvantage. The page checked covers award travel generally rather than a business-class chart: award travel can be booked to more than 1,000 destinations on aa.com and the American app, with partner airline flights included in the results [1].
KrisFlyer. The Singapore Airlines document checked sets out accrual, not the number of miles a business-class award costs. On Singapore Airlines, business-class booking classes C, J and Z accrue at 150% and D and U at 125% [2]. Partner rates vary by operating carrier — Lufthansa business classes C, D and J accrue at 150%, and Z and P at 125% [2]. For codeshares, eligibility and level follow the operating airline's booking class, which may differ from the letter shown on the ticket [2].
Partner access and where awards are booked
American. Award travel on American and many partner airlines is booked on aa.com and in the American app, and partner flights are included in award search results, with a filter for preferred airlines on the 'Choose flights' page [1]. Reservations handles reinstatement where a trip has already started, involves travel on partner airlines, or was changed because of an uncontrollable event since the ticket was issued [1].
Emirates. Classic Rewards covers any Emirates or flydubai destination in any class [3]. For partner flight rewards, the page sends readers to separate FAQs for flydubai and for other airline partners to understand the booking process [3]. Emirates also notes that upgrades are subject to availability, and that on some multi-flight journeys an upgrade is confirmed only if seats are available on the entire journey [3].
Qatar Airways. Linked members may redeem Avios from either or both of their linked accounts for award tickets or Cash + Avios without moving Avios first [4]. At checkout, Avios can be taken in proportion to the balance of each account, or from the Privilege Club account first, or from the BAEC account first, at the member's choice [4].
Taxes, surcharges and refunds
American. On a cancellation, all taxes and fees are refunded in full except sale-imposed nonrefundable taxes, taxes American must pay whether or not the member travels, and cases where the trip has already started; some countries have different refund rules and American follows those [1]. Changing an eligible trip online carries no change fee for award tickets, though a difference may be payable [1]. Miles are reinstated to the original AAdvantage account and deducted from that original account even when the amount is unchanged; tax differences may be payable, and any amount owed is refunded to the credit card used for the original booking [1]. A cancellation made before the first flight departs reinstates the miles and refunds eligible taxes and fees at no charge for up to one year from the ticket purchase date [1].
Emirates. The miles pay the full cost of the ticket excluding taxes [3]. Qatar Airways. Cash + Avios uses Avios to save up to 50% of the cash amount on flight tickets purchasable with Qatar Airways [4], and Avios are described as having no fixed or par value and as not being redeemable for cash [4].
Routing rules and changes after booking
American cash and miles. Cash-and-miles bookings are made only on aa.com or in the American app and only on flights marketed and operated by American within the contiguous 48 U.S. states; they are not available for Basic Economy fares, flights to, from or within Alaska or Hawaii, international flights, multi-city bookings, trips including another airline, reservations including travel in different cabins, AAdvantage Business bookings or TripLink bookings [1]. Cash-and-miles bookings are also not eligible for voluntary changes or exchanges — a change means cancelling and making a new reservation [1].
American mileage upgrade awards. Changes to requested or confirmed mileage upgrade awards were possible until 11:59 p.m. CT on 11 August 2025, and from midnight CT on 12 August 2025 changes can no longer be made [1]. Co-payments for these upgrades are non-refundable, and a ticket upgraded this way keeps all the fare rules and restrictions of the original purchased fare [1].
Emirates multi-flight journeys. Depending on the zones flown, where the member stops over or transits, it may be possible to upgrade only one section of a journey; where partial upgrading is allowed and an instant upgrade is taken at the check-in desk, additional requests must be made at transfer desks or stopover destinations [3].
Qatar Airways. Change or refund of award tickets and Cash + Avios tickets is supported only offline [4]. Where such a ticket is refunded, all Avios to be refunded are credited to the Privilege Club account, and the linked member may then move them to the BAEC account if the accounts remain linked [4].
Exceptions and limits
- American cash and miles eligibility. The member must hold an AAdvantage account, have a valid U.S. home address saved in the profile, including Puerto Rico and U.S. territories, and have at least 500 AAdvantage miles [1].
- American Instant Upgrade with miles. With miles, the upgrade can be requested up to 24 hours before departure, against any time before departure when paying cash, and only where the flight is operated by American or American Eagle, the ticket was booked directly through American, and the ticket was bought within the 50 U.S. states [1].
- American reactivation. Expired miles can be reactivated for a fee within 24 months of expiration, in a single transaction, up to a maximum of 500,000 miles; reactivated miles are credited as a mileage bonus and do not count toward AAdvantage status qualification or Million Miler status [1].
- Emirates mileage validity. Miles must be redeemed before they expire, but the reward ticket booked with them can be valid for up to 12 months; miles due to expire within the next three months can be extended for a further 12 months beyond the original expiry date for a fee [3].
- Qatar Airways linking conditions. A member must be at least 18 and hold both a Privilege Club and a BAEC account; the linking feature becomes available 30 days after account creation and is not available offline; personal details on both accounts must match; only one account from each programme can be linked at a time, and a Privilege Club account can be linked at most twice in any 50-year period [4].
- Qatar Airways household and family pools. A BAEC Household account allows up to seven members, including a maximum of six people under 18, and a household member over 18 may link their individual membership number but can move only their individual Avios balance [4]. The Family Programme allows up to ten members to pool Avios in the Main Member's account, and only the Main Member can move Avios to a BAEC account [4].
