GUIDE
First-Class Award Programs Compared
First-class awards are redemption tickets or upgrades that place a frequent flyer in a First Class or Suites cabin. This guide compares what Emirates Skywards, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and American AAdvantage publish about first-class award pricing, availability, cabin product and carrier surcharges. [1] [2] [3] The sources do not publish a shared first-class award price table, and they do not itemise carrier surcharges for first-class awards. [1] [2] [3]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- Emirates and Singapore Airlines name a First Class or Suites cabin. [1] [2] [3]
- Emirates publishes a Business Class to First Class upgrade path and fare-type rules, but its 7,020-mile starting price is not tied to First Class on the page. [1]
- KrisFlyer publishes that miles can be used for award and upgrade tickets, but not a Suites or First Class award price. [2]
- American publishes award change, cancellation and upgrade rules, but no first-class award price or carrier surcharge schedule. [3]
What the comparison covers
Four fields are used: pricing, availability, cabin product and carrier surcharges. The sources are official programme pages for Emirates Skywards spending, KrisFlyer terms and AAdvantage use of miles. [1] [2] [3] They do not give route-level first-class prices for specific markets. [1] [2] [3]
Pricing and availability
Emirates Skywards. Emirates lists a Business Class to First Class upgrade among its Reward Upgrades, and says Reward Upgrades start from 7,020 Skywards Miles. [1] The page does not say that the 7,020-mile starting price applies to the Business-to-First upgrade, and it does not publish a separate First Class award price. [1] Upgrade pricing depends on fare type: Special fares are not eligible; Saver fares can be upgraded only at online check-in between 48 and 6 hours before departure; Flex and Flex+ fares can be upgraded online up to six hours before departure while seats are available. [1] Saver upgrades require more Skywards Miles than Flex, and Flex more than Flex+, according to the page. [1] Emirates also sells Classic Rewards from 5,000 Skywards Miles, paying the full ticket cost excluding taxes, with a choice of Saver and Flex Plus fares and one-way or round-trip rewards. [1] The page does not say whether that starting price applies to First Class. [1]
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. KrisFlyer miles can be used for award tickets, upgrade awards or redemption tickets on Singapore Airlines, Star Alliance and other partner airlines. [2] The terms state that the award structure, award levels and availability of awards can change, and that partner awards depend on the partner continuing to participate in the programme. [2] They do not publish a Suites or First Class award price. [2]
American AAdvantage. American says award travel can be booked to more than 1,000 destinations on aa.com and the American app, with partner airline flights included and filterable by airline. [3] The page does not publish AAdvantage award prices by cabin. [3] Because the sources do not publish first-class award calendars, award availability has to be read as programme-specific and subject to change, not as a promise of a seat. [1] [2]
Cabin and upgrade paths
Emirates. Emirates names First Class as a cabin and allows a Business Class to First Class upgrade with miles. [1] The page does not describe the First Class seat, suite or service in the sections checked, so it does not support a like-for-like lie-flat seat comparison. [1] Instant upgrades are offered at check-in and on board, subject to availability. [1] On some multi-flight journeys, an upgrade is available only if seats are available on the entire journey, and partial upgrades depend on the zones and stopover or transit points. [1]
Singapore Airlines. The KrisFlyer terms name Suites and First Class in the earning table, with 200% accrual for booking classes A and F, and count Suites, First Class and Business Class flights as eligible for PPS Value. [2] Those are earning and qualification rules, not award prices. [2] The terms do not describe the Suites or First Class seat product. [2]
American. American's page covers award travel and mileage upgrades generally and does not describe a First Class cabin product. [3] Instant Upgrade with miles can be requested up to 24 hours before departure on flights operated by American or American Eagle, if the ticket was booked directly with American and bought within the 50 U.S. states. [3] Mileage upgrade awards could be changed until 11:59 p.m. CT on August 11, 2025; from midnight CT on August 12, 2025, changes can no longer be made. [3] Co-payments for mileage upgrade awards are non-refundable, and upgraded tickets keep the original fare rules. [3]
Carrier surcharges and taxes
None of the three sources publishes a carrier surcharge schedule for first-class awards. [1] [2] [3] Emirates says Classic Rewards cover the full ticket cost using miles excluding taxes, but does not itemise surcharges. [1] American says it refunds all taxes and fees on a cancelled award trip except sale-imposed nonrefundable taxes, taxes it must pay whether or not the member travels, and trips already started, and that some countries have different refund rules. [3] The page separates taxes and fees but does not label any of them as carrier surcharges. [3] KrisFlyer's terms refer to airport taxes in the context of earning miles and PPS Value on cash portions, but do not list fuel surcharges for first-class awards. [2]
Exceptions and limits
- Emirates excludes Special fares from upgrades and limits Saver awards to online check-in between 48 and 6 hours before departure. [1] Flex and Flex+ fares can be upgraded online up to six hours before departure while seats are available. [1]
- KrisFlyer award tickets and redemption tickets do not earn KrisFlyer miles. [2] The terms allow the programme to change award levels and availability. [2]
- American's cash-and-miles option is not available for international flights or reservations that include travel in different cabins. [3] American reinstates miles and refunds eligible taxes and fees on cancellation only if the member cancels before the first flight departs and within one year of ticket purchase. [3]
- None of the sources guarantees first-class award availability, and none publishes a first-class award price by route. [1] [2] [3]
