Points vs Cash for Business Class
Points vs cash for business class is the choice between buying a business-class ticket with money and booking an award, where the price is a number of miles plus a separate cash amount for taxes, fees and carrier charges. The British Airways Club prices a Reward Flight as Avios plus a fixed cash amount covering those charges [4], while Emirates Classic Rewards pay the full cost of the ticket in Miles excluding taxes [2].
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- The cash element of an award is defined differently by each programme: British Airways bundles a fixed cash amount covering taxes, fees and carrier charges into a Reward Flight [4], while Emirates Classic Rewards pay the ticket cost in Miles excluding taxes [2].
- Only one of the three sources publishes a business-class award price: a Club World seat from 154,000 Avios + £350 return, an example correct as of May 2026 [4].
- A published guarantee of business-class award seats exists only for British Airways' own flights to and from Heathrow, Gatwick and London City [4].
- Cash-plus-miles tools are narrower than full awards: American restricts its version to flights marketed and operated by American within the contiguous 48 states and excludes international flights [1].
What the cash part of an award covers
British Airways. A Reward Flight consists of Avios plus a fixed cash amount to cover taxes, fees and carrier charges, and the Avios and cash price depends on date, destination and class of travel [4]. That fixed cash amount applies on British Airways' own flights; when a Reward Flight is taken with Iberia, American Airlines or oneworld partners, the cash needed to cover taxes, fees and carrier charges is variable rather than fixed [4]. The business-class example given is a Club World seat from 154,000 Avios + £350 return, with all examples correct as of May 2026 [4]. Shorter examples on the same page are from 10,000 Avios + £2.50 each-way to Europe, the UK and Ireland, and from 55,000 Avios + £150 return further afield [4]. The date of travel decides whether a peak or off-peak Avios amount applies [4].
Emirates. Classic Rewards pay for the full cost of a ticket using Miles, excluding taxes, and can be booked to any Emirates or flydubai destination in any class, with Saver and Flex Plus fares and round-trip or one-way rewards starting from 5,000 Miles [2]. The page checked does not publish a business-class Classic Reward price or describe a fixed cash amount for those rewards [2].
American Airlines. Award travel can be booked to more than 1,000 destinations on aa.com and the American app, and partner airline flights appear in award search results and can be filtered on the 'Choose flights' screen [1]. The page does not set out a mileage price or the tax and carrier-charge amount for a business-class award; it describes which taxes and fees come back if an award is cancelled [1].
Miles plus cash, and upgrades
Emirates Cash+Miles lets a member pay for an Emirates or flydubai ticket with any combination of cash and Skywards Miles, with the relevant amount taken off the fare at payment [2]. The same currency can be used for lounge access, excess baggage, paid seat selection, meals and insurance on those two airlines [2]. Separately, Reward Upgrades move Economy to Premium Economy or Business, Premium Economy to Business, and Business to First, from 7,020 Skywards Miles, with instant upgrades at check-in and on board [2].
American cash and miles can be booked only on aa.com or in the American app, and requires AAdvantage membership, a valid U.S. home address in the profile (including Puerto Rico and U.S. territories) and at least 500 AAdvantage miles [1]. It is available only on flights marketed and operated by American within the contiguous 48 U.S. states, and is not available for Basic Economy fares, flights to, from or within Alaska or Hawaii, international flights, multi-city bookings, trips that include another airline, reservations that include travel in different cabins, AAdvantage Business bookings or TripLink bookings [1]. Because international flights are excluded, a long-haul business-class itinerary falls outside this option [1]. Cash and miles bookings are not eligible for voluntary changes or exchanges; a change means cancelling and booking again [1].
Availability and fare rules
British Airways guarantees a minimum number of reward seats on all its flights to and from London Heathrow and London Gatwick: at least eight in economy, two in premium economy and four in business (Club Europe and Club World) [4]. On flights to and from London City the guarantee is two reward seats in business and two in economy [4]. Reward Flights remain subject to availability, and Avios-only flights are sold exclusively to Club members on a first-come, first-served basis while seats last, after which remaining seats may open to all customers [4].
Emirates ties upgrade eligibility to the fare brand: Special fares are not eligible, Saver fares can only be upgraded at online check-in between 48 and 6 hours before departure and require more Skywards Miles than Flex and Flex+ fares, while Flex and Flex+ fares can be redeemed any time up to six hours before departure as long as seats are available [2]. Upgrade requests at check-in or on board are subject to availability [2]. American's page describes how partner flights appear in award search results but does not publish availability rules for business-class awards [1].
Changing and cancelling
American award tickets carry no change fees, though a traveller may have to pay a difference; miles are reinstated to the original AAdvantage account, and a tax difference may be due [1]. A trip can be cancelled at any time, with miles reinstated and eligible taxes and fees refunded at no charge up to one year from the date the ticket was purchased, provided the cancellation happens before the first flight departs [1].
British Airways Reward Flights can in most circumstances be cancelled or changed, subject to availability, for a small service fee, and cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before the first flight to be eligible for a refund [4]. Moving from a peak to an off-peak date refunds the difference in Avios, but for Avios part payment bookings the money portion cannot be refunded [4]. On Avios-only flights, cancellation up to 24 hours before departure gives a full refund minus a £35 service fee; for bookings cancelled within 24 hours of departure, taxes, fees and charges paid are refunded, but on Avios & Money bookings the cash portion and the Avios are not refunded [4].
Emirates requires Skywards Miles to be redeemed before they expire, but a reward ticket booked with them can be valid for up to 12 months, and Miles due to expire within three months can be extended for a further 12 months for a fee [2].
Exceptions and limits
- The British Airways seat guarantee covers its own flights to and from Heathrow, Gatwick and London City only, and the page does not extend those numbers to partner-operated flights [4].
- The fixed cash amount on a Reward Flight applies to British Airways flights; with Iberia, American and oneworld partners the cash element is variable [4].
- American refunds all taxes and fees on a cancelled award except sale-imposed nonrefundable taxes, taxes it must pay whether or not a customer travels, and trips that have already started; some countries have different refund rules, in which case those rules apply [1].
- American cash and miles is unavailable on international flights, Basic Economy, Alaska or Hawaii itineraries, multi-city bookings, trips including another airline and mixed-cabin reservations [1].
- Emirates Special fares cannot be upgraded, and Saver fares can only be upgraded at online check-in between 48 and 6 hours before departure [2].
