FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is checked baggage?
Checked baggage is baggage accepted under an airline's checked-bag allowance, which sets how many bags can be checked and their size, weight and fee terms. American Airlines publishes these rules for its own flights. [1]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- American Airlines calculates checked-bag size by adding length, width and height. For all regions except to or from Australia and New Zealand, the checked-bag limit is 62 in / 158 cm and 50 lbs / 23 kg; First/Business free bags get 70 lbs / 32 kg and First/Business excess charged bags get 50 lbs / 23 kg. For flights to or from Australia and New Zealand, free bags get 70 lbs / 32 kg and excess charged bags get 50 lbs / 23 kg. [1]
- For travel within and between the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean (except Cuba and Haiti), Central America (except Panama) and Guyana, American Airlines charges $50 for the first checked bag ($45 if paid online) and $60 for the second ($55 if paid online); Basic Economy tickets pay $5 more for the first and second checked bags. [1]
- American Airlines through checks bags only when all tickets are in the same reservation and the connection is to another American Airlines or one world flight. [1]
- United Airlines' MileagePlus rules state that Premier status benefits, including baggage allowance, are based on the member's status at the time of travel, not at the time the air travel was purchased, booked or reserved. [6]
Allowance basics
American Airlines allows passengers to check up to 10 bags on American-operated domestic, Trans-Atlantic and Trans-Pacific trips, and up to 5 bags on American-operated flights to, through or from Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, South America or Brazil. Seasonal and year-round bag restrictions apply to those regions. [1]
Checked-bag fees
American Airlines charges checked-bag fees per person and for each direction of travel. For travel within and between the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean (except Cuba and Haiti), Central America (except Panama) and Guyana, the first checked bag is $50 ($45 if paid online) and the second is $60 ($55 if paid online); Basic Economy tickets pay $5 more for the first and second checked bags. [1]
Fees paid at the airport are non-refundable. If a passenger pays for checked bags and later buys or receives an upgrade that includes free checked bags, any bag fees already paid will not be refunded. If a passenger believes a bag fee was charged incorrectly, American says to contact a representative or file a refund claim within 45 days. [1]
American Airlines says published bag fees are base rates according to travel dates and destination, apply at each check-in location, and do not show applicable taxes. [1]
Premier status and baggage allowances
United Airlines' MileagePlus rules state that benefits attached to Premier status, including baggage allowance, are based on the member's status at the time of travel, not at the time the air travel was purchased, booked or reserved. [6]
The same rules require a member who receives benefits such as an additional baggage allowance to maintain their MileagePlus account number throughout the entire reservation and any subsequent reservations created from the original reservation, and for the entire duration of the original and future travel associated with those reservations. [6]
They also say that if a companion traveler receives benefits through a member's status and the member is no longer traveling on the original reservation, the companion will no longer be eligible for the Premier and other benefits obtained as a result of the member's status. [6]
Size and weight
American Airlines calculates the size limit by adding the total outside dimensions of each bag, length + width + height. For all regions except to or from Australia or New Zealand, the checked-bag allowance is 62 in / 158 cm in dimension and 50 lbs / 23 kg in weight; First/Business free bags get 70 lbs / 32 kg and First/Business excess charged bags get 50 lbs / 23 kg. For all confirmed customers on flights to or from Australia or New Zealand, the allowance is 62 in / 158 cm in dimension, with 70 lbs / 32 kg for free bags and 50 lbs / 23 kg for excess charged bags. [1]
Exceptions and limits
- Cuba has its own allowance. Each passenger traveling to Cuba may check no more than 2 bags with a maximum weight of 70 lbs / 32 kg per bag, plus 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item; seasonal exceptions apply to Havana. [1]
- Free bags come with conditions. American Airlines says AAdvantage and one world status may be eligible for up to 3 free checked bags on itineraries marketed and operated by American Airlines. The number of free bags depends on the highest status level at ticketing or check-in and requires the AAdvantage number in the reservation. Free checked bags may not apply on codeshare flights operated by partners. [1]
- Bag limitations can apply. American Airlines says seasonal and/or year-round limitations apply on checked bags and the number of boxes allowed for travel to select cities. [1]
