FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is the piece concept vs the weight concept?

Piece concept and weight concept are the two ways an airline can express a free checked baggage allowance: under the piece concept the allowance is a set number of bags and each bag carries its own weight cap, while under the weight concept the allowance is one total weight that is shared across every bag checked. [2] Because one system limits bag count and the other limits combined weight, the two are not interchangeable when you pack. [2] Airlines choose the system per route, fare and cabin, so a traveller can meet both systems on a single trip. [2]

Key takeaways

  • The piece concept counts bags and caps each one; the weight concept sets one combined kilo figure and lets the bag count vary underneath it. [2]
  • Free checked allowances are published airline by airline and route by route, on top of the industry standards, resolutions and recommended practices that govern baggage handling. [1] [2]
  • Emirates applies the weight concept to most routes and the piece concept only on flights to and from the Americas and Africa. [2]
  • A two-piece allowance cannot be turned into one heavier bag, because the per-piece weight cap applies to each bag separately. [2]

What is the weight concept?

The weight concept turns the free allowance into a single figure for the combined weight of everything checked, and leaves the passenger to decide how to divide that figure into bags. [2] At Emirates, the weight-concept allowance is based on the total weight of all your baggage, and you can check in as many bags as you like up to the weight allowance for your travel class. [2] A handling limit sits on top of that: each individual bag must not weigh more than 32 kg. [2]

Emirates uses the weight concept on most routes, with the allowance depending on where you are travelling, your fare and your travel class. [2] The published weight-concept figures as of 18 October 2026 are shown below. [2]

Emirates weight-concept allowance, per passenger
CabinSpecialSaverFlexFlex Plus
Economy Class20 kg25 kg*30 kg35 kg
Premium Economy35 kg
Business Class40 kg
First Class50 kg

*Economy Saver is 30 kg on journeys originating in Australia and New Zealand for tickets issued on or after 26 November 2019, and on journeys from Europe to Australia or New Zealand for tickets issued on or after 5 July 2024. [2]

Size is capped as well: on weight-concept routes the total dimensions (length plus width plus height) of each checked bag should not exceed 203 cm (79.92 inches), and an item above that cannot travel as checked baggage at all — it has to be sent as cargo or freight. [2]

What is the piece concept?

The piece concept counts bags instead of kilos as the primary unit, then attaches a weight allowance to each of those bags, with both the number and the per-bag weight set by fare or travel class. [2] Emirates applies the piece concept on flights to and from the Americas and on flights to and from Africa, and for tickets issued on or after 9 August 2021 it applies to flights into Africa as well. [2] Flights within the Americas and between the United States and Europe follow a separate piece table from the rest of the Americas and Africa network. [2]

Business Class2 pieces up to 32 kg each2 pieces up to 32 kg each

Piece-concept bags must also be smaller than weight-concept bags: each bag's total dimensions may not exceed 150 cm (59 inches), and an item measuring between 150 cm and 203 cm (79.92 inches) is subject to oversize baggage fees. [2] Anything above 203 cm must be sent as cargo or freight. [2]

Why is a two-bag allowance not double a one-bag allowance?

Because the piece concept applies its weight cap to each bag on its own, a two-piece allowance is not a single weight figure that can be doubled, halved or merged into one bag. [2] Two pieces of up to 23 kg each gives 46 kg of potential checked weight in Emirates Economy Class on piece-concept routes, but only if exactly two bags are checked and neither is over 23 kg — a single 30 kg bag would breach the 23 kg per-piece cap even though it sits far below the combined total. [2]

The weight concept works the other way round: the total is fixed and the split is flexible, so the 40 kg Emirates Business Class allowance on weight-concept routes can be packed as two 20 kg bags, four 10 kg bags or any other division that keeps every bag at or under the 32 kg handling limit. [2]

For the same cabin the two systems also produce different totals, and the route decides which one applies: Emirates Business Class carries 40 kg under the weight concept but two pieces of up to 32 kg each under the piece concept. [2]

How is excess baggage priced under each system?

Under the weight concept the chargeable threshold is a kilo figure — the free allowance is the total weight for the cabin, bags can be added freely underneath it, and what is payable depends on how far the total goes past that number. [2] Under the piece concept two separate limits can be broken, the number of pieces and the weight of each piece, so one bag too many and one bag too heavy are different problems. [2] Piece-concept routes add a size charge on top: items with total dimensions between 150 cm and 203 cm are subject to oversize baggage fees. [2]

Emirates directs passengers to Manage your booking to check the rules specific to their journey and how much extra baggage will cost. [2] The general treatment of these charges is covered in excess and overweight baggage fees.

Exceptions and limits

  • Long journeys via Europe or Dubai. If a trip from Australia, New Zealand or Asia to North or South America includes a sector in Europe or a stopover in Dubai longer than 24 hours, Emirates applies the weight concept to the entire ticketed journey; for travel into Africa with a stopover of more than 24 hours, the weight concept may apply. [2]
  • Older tickets. Where the journey originates in Africa and the ticket was issued before 11 May 2020, Emirates allows two pieces of up to 23 kg each in Economy Special. [2]
  • Interline journeys. If travel starts in the United States and the first airline on the booking is not Emirates, different rules may apply; interline flights are on the same ticket as the Emirates flights but operated by another airline without an Emirates flight number, and those carriers' allowances may differ from Emirates'. [2] See baggage interlining.
  • Emirates Skywards elite allowances. Platinum, Gold and Silver members may receive extra baggage allowance on routes that use the weight concept; on piece-concept routes, on Emirates flights only, Platinum and Gold members are eligible for one additional checked piece at 23 kg in Economy Class and 32 kg in Business and First Class above the ticketed limit. [2]
  • Very large parties. If more than 15 pieces are checked in, Emirates may not be able to carry all the extra baggage on the same flight; it says the extra bags will travel on the next available flight and be delivered within five days, and that this arrangement does not apply to flights to and from the United States. [2]

Frequently asked questions

Is a two-piece allowance double a one-piece allowance?

No. The piece concept caps each bag separately, so two pieces of up to 23 kg each only adds up to 46 kg if both bags are checked and neither exceeds 23 kg; a single heavier bag breaks the per-piece cap. [2]

Which Emirates routes use the piece concept?

Flights to and from the Americas and flights to and from Africa, with flights into Africa included for tickets issued on or after 9 August 2021; most other routes use the weight concept. [2]

Can I check more bags than the stated number under the weight concept?

Yes. On Emirates weight-concept routes you can check in as many bags as you like up to the weight allowance for your travel class, provided no single bag weighs more than 32 kg. [2]

Do elite status benefits work the same way under both systems?

No. Emirates Skywards Platinum, Gold and Silver members may get extra allowance on weight-concept routes, while on piece-concept routes the extra piece is offered to Platinum and Gold members on Emirates flights only. [2]

What happens to an oversized bag on a piece-concept route?

Bags with total dimensions over 150 cm but under 203 cm attract oversize baggage fees, and anything above 203 cm has to travel as cargo or freight. [2]
