How to earn AAdvantage Loyalty Points without flying
AAdvantage Loyalty Points are the points American Airlines uses to measure elite status in its AAdvantage® programme, and they can be earned without flying: eligible non-flight activity such as AAdvantage eShopping™, AAdvantage Dining℠, hotel stays and car rentals earns base miles, and base miles are the type that also carry Loyalty Points. [2] [5]

Key takeaways
- Loyalty Points decide AAdvantage® tier status, and only Base Miles earn them; Bonus Miles do not. [5] [4]
- American's status page lists base miles from non-airline partners — AAdvantage eShopping™, AAdvantage Dining℠, car rentals and hotel stays — as an input to its status and rewards estimator. [2]
- Bought, gifted or transferred AAdvantage® miles earn Bonus Miles, so they do not build status. [5]
- The qualification window opens on 1 March each year, and status is held through 31 March of the following full year. [5] [4]
How do you earn AAdvantage Loyalty Points without flying?
The answer depends on which type of mile a transaction credits. American splits AAdvantage® miles into Base Miles, which are standard AAdvantage® miles that also earn Loyalty Points, and Bonus Miles, which do not earn Loyalty Points. [5] [4] American decides at its discretion how many Loyalty Points accrue for Base Miles, and both types of mile are treated the same when you redeem them. [5] In practice, anything that credits Base Miles moves you toward status, and anything that credits Bonus Miles does not. [5]
Non-airline partners. American's status page names AAdvantage® base miles earned through non-airline partners such as AAdvantage eShopping™, AAdvantage Dining℠, car rentals and hotel stays as an input to its status and rewards estimator. [2] Because these are base miles, this is the non-flight activity that also carries Loyalty Points. [5]
Co-brand credit card spending. The same estimator assumes one AAdvantage® base mile per US$1 spent on purchases with a U.S. or internationally-issued American Airlines AAdvantage® credit card. [2] Base miles are the type that earns Loyalty Points. [5]
Packages and paid extras. American sells AAdvantage Pass™ packages made up of AAdvantage® miles, Loyalty Points and AAdvantage® Status, under separate package terms. [5] Some ancillary products, such as Instant Upgrades bought with cash, may also earn Base Miles as American determines. [5] Transactions paid or redeemed with a combination of cash and AAdvantage® miles may not accrue miles or Loyalty Points unless American states otherwise. [5]
Which transactions do not earn Loyalty Points?
Bonus Miles are typically granted through special promotions and offers, and through Buy Miles, Gift Miles and Transfer Miles transactions. [5] The AAdvantage® terms also exclude miles earned from Offers, miles from those buy, gift and transfer transactions, and miles converted from another programme's currency from Loyalty Point earning. [5] Miles earned through an Offer are Bonus Miles unless the offer specifies otherwise, so they do not count toward AAdvantage® tier qualification or Million Miler℠ status. [5]

How does non-flight activity affect elite status?
AAdvantage® tiers are earned on the Loyalty Points a member collects during the 12-month period that starts on 1 March each year, and status membership runs from the moment the tier is reached through 31 March of the following full year, unless American decides otherwise. [5] [4] That means non-flight earning inside the window counts alongside flights toward the same tier decision. [5]
The tiers shown on American's status page are AAdvantage® Member, AAdvantage Gold®, AAdvantage Platinum®, AAdvantage Platinum Pro® and AAdvantage Executive Platinum®, and the estimator also tracks a separate Loyalty Point Rewards level for the coming qualification year. [2] Status brings bonus earning on eligible flights, advertised as 40%, 60%, 80% and 120% more miles and Loyalty Points across the elite tiers, although benefits may not be available on all flights or may vary by flight. [2]
American can use Loyalty Points for any purpose it determines, including tracking qualification toward particular AAdvantage® tiers. [5] It also reserves the right to change how miles and Loyalty Points are earned at any time. [5]
Exceptions and limits
- Late credit. Members may request AAdvantage® miles and Loyalty Points for past eligible transactions up to 12 months from the activity date, but non-flight transactions made more than six months before the enrollment date are not eligible unless American expressly permits it. [5] Claims for uncredited miles or points must reach American within 12 months of the earning date. [5]
- Reversals. If an accrual becomes invalid — for example a qualifying purchase is cancelled or returned — or was obtained fraudulently or without authorisation, the Loyalty Points are removed and any status qualification or benefit they triggered may be reversed. [5]
- Reactivated miles. Miles reactivated after expiry are credited as a mileage bonus and do not count toward AAdvantage® status qualification or Million Miler℠ status. [3]
- Offer registration. For an offer tied to Loyalty Point activity, only eligible Loyalty Points accrued after registration count, unless American permits otherwise. [5]
- No double dipping. Unless American states otherwise, the same flight, hotel stay or car rental cannot earn AAdvantage® miles, Loyalty Points and similar rewards under both AAdvantage® and another loyalty programme in which American participates. [5]
- Once per flight, and no credit for disruption. Miles and Loyalty Points accumulate once per eligible flight regardless of how many seats are purchased, and nothing is awarded for cancelled flights or for being accommodated on another airline. [5]
