FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a million miler?

A million miler is a lifetime recognition tier that some airlines give a member who has flown a set number of miles or flight segments across their whole membership history rather than within one status year. Delta Air Lines invites SkyMiles members who have accumulated at least 1 million flight miles into its Million Miler programme [3], while Vietnam Airlines awards a lifetime Million Miler membership card to Lotusmiles members who reach 1 million qualifying miles [4].

Key takeaways

  • A million miler tier is counted over a member's lifetime, not reset each status year: Delta bases its tier on flight miles flown over a Member's lifetime [3], and Vietnam Airlines describes its Million Miler card as a card for life [4].
  • Both programmes publish 1 million as the entry point, but they count different things: Delta includes Award Travel and qualifying partner flights, and excludes Basic Economy and similar Economy Light fares [3]; Vietnam Airlines counts only flights with a VN flight number operated by Vietnam Airlines and excludes promotional miles [4].
  • The reward shapes differ: Delta gives annual complimentary Medallion Status plus upgrade priority and bag tags [3], while Vietnam Airlines issues a permanent card whose benefits correspond to SkyTeam Elite Plus [4].
  • Delta's status is not transferable [3]; Vietnam Airlines lets a Million Miler member give a 12-month Platinum card to one family-account relative, once per member [4].

How does a million miler tier work?

A million miler tier is the long-distance version of elite status: the airline keeps a running total of miles or segments flown on eligible flights, and that total keeps growing across decades of travel instead of resetting when a status year ends. Because the target is measured in seven figures, the tier is usually reached slowly and then held, which is why programmes market it as a milestone rather than a yearly target.

Delta frames its version as its most elite milestone, reserved for customers who have flown millions of miles with Delta and its partner airlines. The tier is based on total flight miles flown over a Member's lifetime, and members who have accumulated at least 1 million flight miles are invited into the programme. Membership is not something a member applies for: Delta says a celebratory welcome email with a link to its gift site is sent within 24 hours of reaching a new Million Miler tier, and annual complimentary Status is processed alongside that email. [3]

Vietnam Airlines treats the same idea as a card tier. A Lotusmiles member who accumulates 1 million qualifying miles or more on eligible Vietnam Airlines flights receives a Million Miler membership card for life, and the programme describes the accompanying benefits as those of the top card tier, corresponding to SkyTeam Elite Plus. [4]

Which miles count toward the total?

Whether award travel, partner flying, bonus miles or cheap fares feed the lifetime counter is decided programme by programme, and the two programmes below answer those questions differently.

Delta SkyMiles: flight miles flown

Delta counts flight miles flown over a Member's lifetime, including Award Travel and qualifying flights on partner airlines. Basic Economy and similar Economy Light fares are excluded. [3]

Vietnam Airlines Lotusmiles: qualifying miles on VN flights

Vietnam Airlines' threshold is expressed in qualifying miles rather than flight miles, and the flights that generate them are tightly defined. Only flights carrying a VN flight number and operated by Vietnam Airlines count, and the ticket must be booked from Standard Economy or above on international segments, or from Flexible Economy or above on domestic Vietnam segments. Promotional miles are excluded from the total. [4]

What benefits carry into lifetime status?

Reaching a million miler tier does not usually hand over every benefit of the airline's top annual tier. Delta, for instance, gives annual complimentary Medallion Status, a higher priority position for Complimentary Upgrades and special bag tags that the member personalises, plus a curated gift chosen from the Million Miler Gift Site each time a million miles is reached. [3]

Upgrade priorityA higher priority position for Complimentary Upgrades [3]

Vietnam Airlines' card instead carries a full airport and onboard package on Vietnam Airlines-operated VN flights: two extra standard 23 kg checked pieces and a free golf set of up to 23 kg, SkyPriority baggage tagging, priority check-in and boarding, priority security and immigration lanes, Business lounge access and a Meet & Greet service at Noi Bai, Da Nang and Tan Son Nhat airports, 100% bonus miles after each flight, and 2,000 bonus miles on the member's birthday. [4] On SkyTeam-operated flights the member also receives 100% bonus miles, except on Garuda Indonesia. [4]

Exceptions and limits

  • Delta bag tags are opt-in. A member who does not opt in and select a bag tag before the end of the Medallion Year receives no bag tag in the mail, and Delta says it is not responsible for gifts or bag tags sent to an outdated address. [3]
  • Delta gives one tier, not a stack. A member receives only the Medallion Status and benefits attached to the Million Miler tier, so complimentary Diamond Medallion Status does not also bring the Choice Benefits of Platinum Medallion Status, and lower-tier benefits are not included unless that tier was earned through published requirements. [3]
  • No MQDs and no transfers. Delta's complimentary Status is unrelated to MQDs earned in a Medallion Year and does not generate MQDs, and Million Miler Medallion Status cannot be gifted or transferred to another member. [3]
  • Vietnam Airlines' Platinum gift is one-off. The 12-month Platinum card for a relative in the family account applies once per member, and the member must email the programme to claim it. [4]
  • Vietnam Airlines baggage limits. The SkyTeam baggage benefit does not apply on flights within or between the United States and Canada, the U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico, or on flights to and from Brazil operated by Delta Air Lines, and size and weight rules follow each SkyTeam carrier. [4]
  • Guest conditions. Lounge guests invited by a Vietnam Airlines Million Miler must enter at the same time as the member and hold a ticket on a flight operated by Vietnam Airlines Group or SkyTeam on the same day, and at airports in Vietnam outside Noi Bai, Da Nang and Tan Son Nhat the arrival greeting does not apply when the member has no checked baggage. [4]

Frequently asked questions

Do award flights count toward million miler status?

At Delta they do: Award Travel is included in the flight miles that build Lifetime Flight Miles. [3] At Vietnam Airlines the total is built from qualifying miles on VN-coded flights operated by Vietnam Airlines, with promotional miles excluded. [4]

Does million miler status expire?

Delta's tier is based on lifetime flight miles, but the Medallion Status that comes with it is complimentary for one Medallion Year at a time, currently 1 February to 31 January. [3] Vietnam Airlines issues a Million Miler card for life. [4]

Can a million miler share the status with family?

Delta does not allow it: the status belongs to the earning member and cannot be gifted or transferred. [3] Vietnam Airlines allows a single 12-month Platinum card to be given to a family-account relative, once per member. [4]

Is there a tier above 1 million miles?

Delta states that members who reach the 5 Million Miler milestone receive an annual complimentary invitation for Delta 360° Membership. [3]

How can a Delta member see how close they are?

The accumulated flight miles total appears on the right-hand side of the My SkyMiles page and inside the Fly Delta app. [3]
