How does upgrade priority work?

Upgrade priority exists because upgrade seats are limited. On a flight where upgrades are offered, more members may be eligible than there are seats, so the airline needs a published order to decide who is cleared first and who stays on the list. The order is usually built from a small number of inputs: the member's elite tier, the fare or fare family of the ticket, the status attached to a co-branded payment card, and the point at which the upgrade was requested. Ties are typically settled by whichever input the programme ranks last.

The important point is that the ranking belongs to the programme. Each airline publishes its own order in its own terms, and can change it, so a Silver or Gold member of one scheme will not automatically occupy the same relative position in another. The order can also vary within a single airline by route, by fare family and by airport. A waitlisted upgrade and a complimentary upgrade at the gate can run on different lists, and neither is the same thing as a confirmed upgrade requested in advance.

Does United use the status you had when you booked?

United's MileagePlus rules address the timing question directly. Benefits associated with Premier status — bonus miles, Premier Access, baggage allowance and upgrade benefits among them — are based on the member's Premier status at the time of travel, not at the time that the air travel was purchased, booked or reserved. [6] In practice, the tier that counts against an upgrade is the tier in force on the travel date, so a tier earned between booking and departure is the one applied, and a tier that lapses before departure is not.

Two related conditions sit around that rule. Members receiving benefits at the time of booking, check-in, travel or any other activity in which programme benefits are provided must keep their MileagePlus account number on the entire reservation, and on any subsequent reservations created from the original one, for the whole duration of the travel concerned. [6] Where a companion receives benefits because of a member's status, and that member is no longer travelling on the original reservation, the companion travelling on that reservation stops being eligible for the Premier and other benefits obtained through the member's status. [6]

Which United tickets cannot be upgraded?

MileagePlus rules state that upgrades will not be allowed on some fares or tickets, including but not limited to special promotional accommodations, rentals, industry discounts, consolidation tickets, group rates and special promotional rates such as PassPlus. [6] Because the list is given as examples rather than a closed set, a fare that is not named can still be excluded, and the ticketed fare rules and conditions of carriage apply alongside the programme rules. [6]

Fees can also attach to an upgrade. Award tickets, awards, certificates and seat upgrades may be subject to applicable departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other fees, charges or taxes, and the person using the seat upgrade is responsible for paying any of those items that apply. [6]

Being upgraded does not change how the flight earns. Class-of-service bonus miles and Premier Qualifying Credits are credited according to the fare paid, not the cabin flown, and are not credited on any upgrade. [6] A member who is cleared into a premium cabin therefore earns on the original fare basis.

Exceptions and limits

• The rules can change. United reserve the right to change the rules, benefits, conditions of participation and Premier qualification criteria at any time, with or without notice, even where changes affect the value of status levels, benefits, mileage or certificates already accumulated. [6] Members may not rely on the continued availability of the benefits attached to a Premier status level. [6]
• Matched status has a clock on it. The 2026 MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge accepts applications between 8 January and 21 December 2026. [7] Complimentary Premier status runs for 120 days from the activating flight, a period United call the Challenge Period. [7] To keep the matched level for the remainder of the programme year, a member must earn both a set number of Premier qualifying flights on flights operated by United or United Express and a set number of Premier qualifying points, with the amounts depending on the level matched. [7] If those requirements are not met, the matched status expires and the member may return to a lower earned Premier level or to general member status. [7]
• A matched tier is not identical to an earned one. United state that during the Challenge Period members may not have access to all reciprocal Premier benefits with United's partners, including access to Star Alliance lounges. [7]
• Programme scope. Everything above describes United MileagePlus rules as published in its programme rules and in the 2026 status match terms. Other carriers publish separate orders and separate exclusions, and nothing here should be read as describing how any other airline ranks its upgrade list.
