FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a confirmed upgrade?

Confirmed upgrade is the term for an upgrade that has already been secured for a specific flight, so the traveller is no longer waiting for space to open. It matters because an upgrade request is only worth what its certainty is worth: a waitlisted request can fail, whereas a confirmed upgrade has moved from a request into a seat. Which fares, flights and passengers qualify is decided by the programme that issues the upgrade, not by the term itself. [1]

Key takeaways

  • A confirmed upgrade is already attached to a booking for a named flight, so it is not the same thing as a request sitting on a waitlist or an upgrade decided at the airport on the day of travel. A certificate is the instrument a member spends to obtain the upgrade, not the upgrade itself.
  • Delta Air Lines ranks its Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates above Medallion Complimentary Upgrade requests. [1]
  • Both certificate types exclude Delta Basic experiences from the paid, published fares they accept, and certificates chosen for the 2026 Medallion Year must be booked and flown by January 31, 2027. [1]

What is the difference between a confirmed upgrade and a waitlist upgrade?

A waitlist upgrade is an open request. The traveller has asked for a better cabin, the airline has recorded the request, and whether it is honoured depends on space and on the programme's priority order; nothing is settled when the request is lodged, and it can lapse at check-in or at the gate. A confirmed upgrade has already been applied to the booking, so the outcome is known before departure rather than at the airport. A day-of-departure upgrade sits between the two: it is decided close to the flight, typically at check-in or at the gate, and is therefore never certain in advance.

Delta draws the distinction in its own terms. The airline says its Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates have a higher priority than Medallion Complimentary Upgrade requests, which means a member who has applied a certificate is processed ahead of ordinary upgrade requests. [1] At the same time, Delta states that Medallion Complimentary Upgrades are subject to availability and may not be available on all flights or in all markets. [1] Priority is therefore a statement about the order in which requests are handled, while the availability of the cabin remains a separate question.

How is an upgrade certificate different from the upgrade itself?

A certificate is a unit of value that a member holds in an account. It gives the member something to apply to a booking, but it does not by itself put anyone in a better seat: the programme's rules decide which fares, which flights and which passengers the certificate can cover, and the certificate usually carries a validity window. The confirmed upgrade is the result of applying that value to a specific itinerary. An upgrade award or a miles-plus-cash upgrade works in the same conceptual way, in that the redemption is the instrument and the cleared seat is the outcome.

At Delta, Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates are chosen through the airline's Choice Benefits programme, which is available to Medallion members who reach Platinum or Diamond status. Selection is made in the Delta app, and a certificate number can be viewed in the member's profile; where an email address is on file, Delta says the email arrives within 48 hours of the selection. [1] A Diamond Medallion Member may select Upgrade Certificates only once for their 2026 or 2027 Medallion Year selections. [1]

Which Delta fares and flights accept Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates?

The two certificates are not interchangeable. Delta lists them as follows for the 2026 and 2027 Medallion Years. [1]

Delta upgrade certificates: where they can be used
FeatureGlobal Upgrade CertificateRegional Upgrade Certificate
FlightsDelta and select partner-operated flights [1]Delta flights [1]

Both are described by Delta as one-way certificates. [1] Regional Upgrade Certificates can be used on the same routes as Medallion Complimentary Upgrades, including flights with Delta First and the domestic Delta One experience. [1]

How many Delta upgrade certificates can a member choose, and when do they expire?

The quantity depends on status tier, and Delta publishes the same figures for the 2026 and 2027 Medallion Years. [1]

Certificate choices by tier, 2026 and 2027 Medallion Years
Medallion statusChoice in each Medallion Year
Diamond4 Global, or 8 Regional, or 2 Global and 4 Regional [1]
Platinum4 Regional [1]

Certificates must be booked and flown by the end of the Medallion Year associated with the Choice Benefit selection, regardless of when that benefit was selected. [1] In practice, certificates selected as part of the 2026 Medallion Year Choice Benefits programme must be booked and flown by January 31, 2027, which is the end of that Medallion Year; certificates selected for the 2027 Medallion Year must be booked and flown by January 31, 2028. [1] The relevant selection deadline for a Medallion Year is the same end date, so 2026 selections must be made by January 31, 2027. [1]

Exceptions and limits

  • Basic fares are out of the paid, published fare list. Delta Basic experiences are excluded from the paid, published fares that Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates accept. [1]
  • Booking and flying are two separate requirements. Having a certificate is not enough: the itinerary must be both booked and flown inside the Medallion Year window. [1]
  • Redeemed means gone. Once a Choice Benefit has been redeemed, Delta says it cannot be exchanged or replaced. [1]
  • Award ticket taxes stay with the passenger. Where an upgrade is applied to Award Travel, taxes and any applicable fees are the passenger's responsibility and must be paid when the ticket is booked. [1]
  • Benefits can change. Delta reserves the right to modify or discontinue any Choice Benefit at any time without advance notice, and may substitute an alternative benefit of equal or greater value. [1]

Frequently asked questions

Is a confirmed upgrade the same as a waitlisted upgrade?

No. A waitlisted upgrade is still pending and can fail, while a confirmed upgrade has already been secured for the flight. Delta ranks its Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates above Medallion Complimentary Upgrade requests, so a certificate is handled ahead of an ordinary request. [1]

Can a Delta upgrade certificate be used on an award ticket?

Yes. Delta allows both Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates on Award Travel and Miles + Cash tickets on Delta-operated flights, as well as on Pay with Miles tickets, Companion Certificates and tickets booked as part of a Delta Vacations package. [1]

Do Delta upgrade certificates work on Basic fares?

Delta excludes Delta Basic experiences from the paid, published fares that both certificate types accept. [1]

When must a Delta upgrade certificate be used?

By the end of the Medallion Year attached to the Choice Benefit selection. Certificates from the 2026 Medallion Year must be booked and flown by January 31, 2027, and those from the 2027 Medallion Year by January 31, 2028. [1]

Can one certificate cover other people on the same booking?

Yes. Delta describes the certificates as usable for the member and/or multiple companions, and describes them as one-way. [1]
