What is a systemwide upgrade?
A systemwide upgrade is an upgrade entitlement — usually a certificate or an elite-choice benefit — that an airline loyalty programme gives a top-tier member and that moves an eligible booking into a premium cabin without the member redeeming miles for the upgrade itself. Delta Air Lines runs the same idea under product names: its Global Upgrade Certificates and Regional Upgrade Certificates are issued as Choice Benefits to Platinum and Diamond Medallion members. [2]

How is a systemwide upgrade different from a mileage upgrade?
A mileage upgrade spends the currency in the account. Delta's Mileage Upgrade Awards require the member to hold enough miles to upgrade each passenger on the eligible one-way segment, and they are valid only with a published qualifying fare; Delta lists bulk fares, companion fares, group fares, certain pricing programmes, Round the World fares and International Bereavement Fares as ineligible. [4] Those awards are also valid only in certain markets and on carriers other than Delta-operated and marketed flights, and they cannot be combined with other promotional or discount offers or with SkyMiles programme awards. Certificates work the other way round: nothing extra leaves the mileage balance, and the rules expressly allow them where a Mileage Upgrade Award is barred. Award tickets are not eligible for Mileage Upgrade Awards, yet members may use Global or Regional Upgrade Certificates with Award Travel tickets, Miles + Cash tickets on Delta-operated flights and Pay with Miles tickets, in each case except Delta Basic experiences. Delta also offers a miles-based path of its own: Upgrade with Miles lets a member pay the difference to a premium product with miles on eligible flights within the U.S. 50 when travelling on a Delta Classic or Extra experience. [4]
Certificates are not the same as the free upgrades that come with status either. Medallion members are eligible for Unlimited Complimentary Upgrades to Delta First and Delta Comfort, excluding Delta Basic experiences, and Delta notes that those complimentary upgrades are subject to availability and may not be available on all flights or in all markets. What do Delta's upgrade certificates cover?
Both certificates are Choice Benefits. For the 2026 Medallion Year a member may select one benefit when qualifying for Platinum Medallion Status and three when qualifying for Diamond Medallion Status, with selection open immediately after the status is earned and due by January 31, 2027; the 2027 Medallion Year follows the same pattern with a January 31, 2028 deadline. [2] Selection is available only in the Delta app, and members with an email address on file receive an email within 48 hours of selecting, with certificate numbers visible in My Profile. [2]

Diamond Medallion members may select Upgrade Certificates only once across their 2026 or 2027 Medallion Year selections. [2]
Global Upgrade Certificates. These are one-way certificates for Delta and select partner-operated flights, usable by the member and/or multiple companions on all paid, published Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort and Delta Main fares, except Delta Basic experiences. [2] They can also be applied to Award Travel tickets and Miles + Cash tickets on Delta-operated flights, Pay with Miles tickets, Companion Certificates and tickets booked as part of a Delta Vacations package. Regional Upgrade Certificates. These are one-way certificates for Delta flights, again for the member and/or multiple companions on paid, published Delta Comfort and Delta Main fares, except Delta Basic experiences, and again with Award Travel, Miles + Cash, Pay with Miles, Companion Certificate and Delta Vacations tickets included. [2] They work on the same routes as Medallion Complimentary Upgrades, including all flights with Delta First and the domestic Delta One experience. [2]
When must the certificate be booked and flown?
Certificates must be booked and flown by the end of the Medallion Year associated with the Choice Benefit selection, regardless of when in that year the benefit was chosen. [2] In practice, certificates selected for the 2026 Medallion Year must be booked and flown by January 31, 2027, and those selected for the 2027 Medallion Year by January 31, 2028. [2] Once redeemed, Choice Benefits cannot be exchanged or replaced, and Delta reserves the right to modify or discontinue any Choice Benefit without advance notice, or to substitute an alternative of equal or greater value, including after selection. Exceptions and limits
- Fare exclusions. Delta Basic experiences fall outside both certificates, and the paid-fare lists differ: the Global list covers Premium Select as well as Comfort and Main, while the Regional list starts at Comfort. [2]
- Matched status. Members matched to Platinum Medallion Status through the Medallion Status Match Challenge are not eligible for Choice Benefits unless they meet the requirements to extend Platinum Medallion Status. [6]
- Complimentary Platinum through American Express Centurion. Centurion members enrolled in complimentary Platinum Medallion Status must earn at least $2,500 Medallion Qualification Dollars in each calendar year after enrollment to be eligible for Choice Benefits for that Medallion Year, and MQDs from MQD HeadStart count toward Medallion qualification but not toward that $2,500 threshold. - No resale. SkyMiles rules prohibit the sale or barter of upgrade certificates; certificates obtained through a prohibited sale or barter transaction are void, invalid for travel and confiscated, and Delta may terminate or deduct miles from the account involved. [4]
- Account closure and audits. Termination of SkyMiles membership cancels any unused upgrade certificates, and while an account is inhibited during an audit Delta may cancel outstanding upgrade certificates, which must be surrendered on request. [4]
