Key takeaways

  • Lotusmiles runs five elite tiers above the basic registered account; Titan and Gold correspond to SkyTeam Elite, while Platinum and Million Miler correspond to SkyTeam Elite Plus. [6]
  • Titan requires 15,000 qualifying miles or 20 qualifying segments in a 12-month qualifying period, Gold 30,000 or 30, Platinum 50,000 or 50, and Million Miler requires one million qualifying miles flown with Vietnam Airlines and is held for life. [6]
  • Miles are credited after eligible flights with a tier bonus of 30% to 100%, and can also be bought, transferred or earned through bank and other partners. [1]
  • Miles pay for award tickets, baggage awards, cabin upgrades and Cash & Miles tickets that start from 2,500 miles. [1] [3]

What are the Lotusmiles membership tiers?

Lotusmiles publishes five elite tiers above the basic registered account: Silver (Bạc), Titan, Gold (Vàng), Platinum (Bạch kim) and Million Miler (Triệu dặm). [6] Progress is measured in qualifying miles or qualifying segments earned inside a qualifying period of 12 consecutive months counted from the date the tier was confirmed. [6]

Tier criteria and validity as published by Vietnam Airlines. [6]

The Silver tier has no expiry, while Titan, Gold and Platinum are valid for 12 months from the date of the upgrade and Million Miler is held for life. [6] Members who do not meet the criteria for their current tier during a qualifying period are moved down automatically to the tier that matches the miles and segments they earned in that period. [6]

The Million Miler threshold is narrower than the headline figure suggests: it counts qualifying miles flown on Vietnam Airlines-numbered flights operated by Vietnam Airlines, on tickets booked from Standard Economy upward on international sectors and from Flexible Economy upward on domestic Vietnam sectors, and promotional miles are excluded. [5] [6]

How do you earn Lotusmiles miles?

Miles are credited after a flight once it satisfies the programme's accrual conditions, which include sectors operated by Vietnam Airlines or by SkyTeam carriers. [6] Elite members receive a percentage bonus on the flight miles credited: Million Miler and Platinum members 100%, Gold 50% and Titan 30%. [6] Birthday bonus miles are also published by tier: 2,000 for Million Miler and Platinum, 1,500 for Gold and 1,000 for Titan. [6] Because the tier bonus is a percentage of the miles credited, the booking class that sets the base accrual rate matters; see booking class and earning for how that works at other carriers.

Beyond flying, Vietnam Airlines states that members can buy miles and can receive miles from promotions or separate announcements. [6] The programme menu also lists buying and transferring bonus miles, extending and reinstating them, co-branded bank cards, and earning with other partners. [1] Cards with VPBank and the Vietcombank Vietnam Airlines American Express are promoted on the programme's front page. [1] Several banks and a telecoms company are named as routes to tier upgrades: Vietcombank, Techcombank, VPBank, VietinBank, VIB, Standard Chartered, Sacombank and MobiFone. [6]

Members who live outside Vietnam and already hold status with another airline can apply to have it matched to the corresponding Lotusmiles tier. [6] Partner activity of this kind is covered more broadly in partner earning.

How do you spend Lotusmiles miles?

Vietnam Airlines lists award tickets, baggage awards, upgrade awards, Cash & Miles tickets, mile donations and a rewards catalogue among the ways to use miles. [1] Cash & Miles tickets start from 2,500 miles. [1] A family account lets members collect awards for family members. [1]

Mileage upgrades can be requested online, at a Vietnam Airlines ticket office or branch, or at the airport with a combination of cash and miles. [3] Any member can upgrade their own ticket; the parent, adoptive parent or legal guardian who heads a family account can redeem for the accounts of children under 16; and Million Miler, Platinum, Gold and Titan members can also upgrade for relatives. [3]

The online and ticket-office channels apply to Vietnam Airlines-numbered flights operated by the airline and to codeshare flights operated by other carriers with numbers from VN*2000 to VN*2999 and from VN*8000 to VN*8999, and only to certain fare classes on tickets issued by Vietnam Airlines with numbers beginning 738. [3] Airport upgrades must be requested between 8 hours and 1 hour 15 minutes before departure, on flights operated by Vietnam Airlines or Vasco, at Noi Bai in Hanoi, Da Nang or Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City, and only on domestic Vietnam flights. [3]

An upgraded ticket keeps its original conditions, validity and mileage accrual rules, and a Business class upgrade includes Business lounge access. [3] Upgrades taken during peak periods cost more miles than at normal times. [3] When you are ready to book partner flights, the partner award booking checklist walks through the sequence.

Million Miler carries services the other tiers do not list: a Meet & Greet service at Noi Bai, Da Nang and Tan Son Nhat, lounge access for up to three guests at Vietnamese airports, and the right to gift a Platinum card valid for 12 months to a relative in the family account, once per member. [5] On SkyTeam carriers, Million Miler members are offered a guaranteed Economy seat on international flights of six hours or more when they buy the highest Economy fare at least 24 hours before departure, along with priority waitlisting and one extra checked piece or 20 kg. [5] Flights on SkyTeam carriers other than Garuda Indonesia also earn an additional 100% of the miles credited. [5]

Exceptions and limits

  • Airport upgrades are partial. Tickets upgraded at the airport with cash and miles do not receive the Business class baggage policy or Business lounge access. [3]
  • Upgrade eligibility is narrow. The published conditions restrict mileage upgrades to specific flight-number ranges and to tickets issued on 738 stock, and the airport channel is limited to three Vietnamese airports and domestic flights. [3]
  • Tier rules are not uniform. Silver has no expiry, Titan, Gold and Platinum last 12 months and lapse to a lower tier if the criteria are missed, and Million Miler is lifetime. [6]
  • Age-based reduction. Members aged 60 and over receive a 20% reduction in the Platinum, Gold and Titan criteria by emailing the programme with their membership number and a photo of an identity card or passport from their registered address. [6]
  • Miles have a shelf life. Flight miles credited are valid for 60 months from crediting unless otherwise stated, and the programme lists separate functions for extending and reinstating bonus miles. [5] [1]
  • SkyTeam generosity is capped in places. Extra baggage on SkyTeam is not offered on flights within or between the United States and Canada, the US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico, or on Delta-operated flights to and from Brazil, and the extra flight miles exclude Garuda Indonesia. [5]
  • Partner benefits vary. Outside SkyTeam, Vietnam Airlines publishes separate lounge, priority and baggage offers for carriers including ANA, Pacific Airlines, Cambodia Angkor Air, VASCO, Philippine Airlines, EL AL, Bangkok Airways and China Southern. [5]

Frequently asked questions

Do Lotusmiles miles expire?

How many qualifying miles do you need for Lotusmiles Gold?

Gold requires 30,000 qualifying miles or 30 qualifying segments earned within a qualifying period of 12 consecutive months from the date the tier was confirmed. [6]

Can you use Lotusmiles miles to upgrade someone else's ticket?

Million Miler, Platinum, Gold and Titan members can upgrade for relatives, and the head of a family account can redeem for the accounts of children under 16. [3]

Which flights accept a mileage upgrade?

Online and ticket-office upgrades cover Vietnam Airlines-operated VN flights and codeshares numbered VN*2000–VN*2999 and VN*8000–VN*8999, on tickets issued by Vietnam Airlines with numbers starting 738. [3] Airport upgrades add flights operated by Vasco and are limited to three Vietnamese airports. [3]
