How to use AAdvantage Elite Choice Rewards

AAdvantage Elite Choice Rewards are the status-linked rewards in the American Airlines AAdvantage programme: reaching an elite tier unlocks travel benefits and, alongside them, “a variety of rewards that enhance your travel”. [3] Status itself is earned with Loyalty Points over a 12-month period that begins on 1 March each year, and the membership you reach then runs to 31 March of the following year. [6]

Key takeaways

  • You qualify for AAdvantage tiers with Loyalty Points earned in the 12 months starting each 1 March, and your status is valid from the moment you reach it through 31 March of the following full year. [6]
  • Reaching a tier unlocks benefits plus a variety of rewards, and American notes that benefits may not be available on all flights or may vary by flight. [3]
  • Status-linked selections carry their own eligibility rules and deadlines: the limited-edition centenary luggage tag, for one, must be selected by 11:59 p.m. CT on 30 April 2027, or before you qualify for a different status. [2]
  • Complimentary upgrades are tied to listed status tiers, apply on American Airlines marketed and operated flights in listed regions, and cannot be combined with any other offer. [6]

How the AAdvantage status year works

American Airlines AAdvantage has five published tiers: AAdvantage Member, AAdvantage Gold, AAdvantage Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum Pro and AAdvantage Executive Platinum. [3] For programme rules, “AAdvantage Status” also covers the ConciergeKey programme and the Million Miler programme. [6]

The clock matters more than the calendar year. American says members qualify for AAdvantage tiers based on the Loyalty Points earned during the 12-month period starting on 1 March each year, and that status membership is valid from the time you reach status through 31 March of the following full year, unless American determines otherwise. [6] The ConciergeKey membership year is an exception: it takes effect on the date you are offered and accept ConciergeKey membership, or on 1 May, whichever comes first, and runs through 30 April of the following year. [6]

Miles and Loyalty Points are not the same currency. As you earn eligible miles you also earn Loyalty Points toward status and rewards, [3] but Bonus Miles — including miles from offers, from Buy Miles, Gift Miles and Transfer Miles transactions, and from converting another programme’s currency — do not earn Loyalty Points. [6] If an accrual later turns out to be invalid, or was obtained fraudulently or without authorisation, the Loyalty Points are removed and any status qualification and benefits triggered by that accrual may be reversed. [6]

Boarding is the most visible status benefit and is published by group:

Group 2AAdvantage Platinum Pro members and oneworld Emerald members [2]
Group 3AAdvantage Platinum members and oneworld Sapphire members [2]
Group 4AAdvantage Gold members and oneworld Ruby members [2]

ConciergeKey members, First and Business travellers, and families with children under 2 years are invited to board ahead of these groups, and members may board any time after their own group is called, up to 15 minutes before departure. [2]

What comes with elite status, and when must you choose?

American presents the AAdvantage programme as one that keeps evolving and directs members to its AAdvantage programme updates page to learn about new benefits and rewards coming in the year ahead and beyond. [2] A status-linked selection is not open indefinitely: eligibility usually depends on how and when you qualified, and there is a closing date.

The published example is the limited-edition luggage tag marking American’s 100th year as an airline. Only members who either newly qualify for AAdvantage status or requalify for the same or higher status starting 1 March 2026, with a status expiration year of 2028, are eligible to receive one. [2]

Deadline to select11:59 p.m. CT on 30 April 2027, or before qualifying for a different AAdvantage status, whichever comes first [2]
PersonalisationThe name on the AAdvantage account is printed on the tag, which is mailed to the address saved on the account; an address must be added before selecting [2]
DeliveryAllow 6–8 weeks; international addresses and P.O. boxes may take longer, and tags are available while supplies last [2]
ExchangesNo exchanges, returns or replacements except if the tag is damaged on arrival [2]

Two further conditions attach to that selection. Claiming the tag means U.S. AAdvantage members agree to receive marketing from American Airlines, [2] and the member’s name, AAdvantage number, address and email address may be shared with the third-party distributor Specialty Print Communications and with the shipping carrier so the tag can be fulfilled and shipped. [2] Because the eligibility line, deadline and delivery terms are set for each selection, they are worth reading before you click — a member who changes status mid-window can lose the chance to choose. [2]

How do status benefits interact with upgrades?

Complimentary upgrades may be available, as determined by American, for ConciergeKey, AAdvantage Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum Pro, AAdvantage Platinum and AAdvantage Gold members. [6] Certain status members may receive a complimentary upgrade for one companion travelling on the same flight; if a reservation holds more than two passengers, American must be contacted because upgrades are not processed automatically for those bookings, and members without status are eligible for a complimentary upgrade only when travelling as a status member’s companion. [6]

Upgrades are valid on American Airlines marketed and operated flights offering a higher class of service or cabin within and between the 50 United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Bermuda, and between the United States and Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua or Panama). [6] They apply to the next class of service on eligible fares; American decides how many seats on each flight are eligible and reserves the right to vary eligibility and notification timelines by status, and upgrade priority is at American’s discretion. [6] If a confirmed upgrade is not available, the member is added automatically to the Airport Upgrade Standby List at check-in. [6]

Upgrade instruments sit on top of status rather than replacing it. Systemwide upgrades are transferable and assignable but may not be sold or bartered, and are void if sold, purchased or expired; they are also governed by their own additional terms, which override the programme terms where the two conflict. [6] Unless American permits otherwise, members may not combine AAdvantage flight awards with systemwide upgrades. [6] And when a flight is upgraded with a complimentary upgrade, an Instant Upgrade or a systemwide upgrade, miles and Loyalty Points accrue under the usual rules that applied before the upgrade, not on the cabin actually flown. [6]

Fixed-rate mileage upgrades are gone: American no longer offers Static-Mileage Upgrade Awards and replaced them with redeeming miles for Instant Upgrades. It no longer accepts new requests, but honours awards requested on or prior to 11 August 2025, and any change to a requested or granted award after that date cancels it — the miles return to the account, while the non-refundable cash co-payment does not. [6]

Exceptions and limits

  • The programme can change. American may change AAdvantage, including its rules, regulations, awards and special offers, at any time with or without notice, and holds the right to end the programme with six months’ notice; accumulating rewards does not give a member vested rights in them. [6]
  • Account closure wipes benefits. Termination of an AAdvantage account by American for any reason results in immediate forfeiture of all accrued and unused rewards and benefits, such as upgrades, baggage fee waivers and priority boarding privileges, and some terminations also cancel existing redemptions. [6]
  • Bag benefits are itinerary-specific. Free checked bags apply by status for the member and guests on the same reservation, excluding group reservations, on itineraries marketed and operated by American, and may not apply to codeshare flights not operated by American; if the standard cabin allowance is higher than the status allowance, the standard allowance applies. [2]
  • Status at ticketing versus check-in. The number of free checked bags follows the highest status held at ticketing or check-in: if status was higher at ticketing, the member shows the ticket receipt to an airport agent, and if it was lower at ticketing, current benefits apply automatically. [2]
  • Upgrade offers cannot be traded. Complimentary upgrades cannot be combined with any other offer, and selling or buying them is prohibited and constitutes fraud, voiding the upgrade. [6]

Frequently asked questions

When does the AAdvantage status year start and end?

Loyalty Points are counted over the 12-month period starting on 1 March each year, and status reached in that period is valid from the date it is reached through 31 March of the following full year. [6]

Do Loyalty Points from buying or transferring miles count toward status?

No. Miles from Buy Miles, Gift Miles and Transfer Miles transactions, from offers, and from converting another programme’s currency only earn Bonus Miles, which are not eligible for Loyalty Points. [6]

Do you still earn miles on a flight you upgraded?

Yes. If travel is upgraded with a complimentary upgrade, an Instant Upgrade or a systemwide upgrade, AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points accrue under the usual rules that applied before the upgrade, not on the upgraded class of service flown. [6]

Can systemwide upgrades be given to someone else?

Systemwide upgrades are transferable and assignable, but they may not be sold or bartered and are void if sold, purchased or expired. [6]
