FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is an upgrade instrument?
Upgrade instrument is the umbrella name for the different mechanisms a frequent flyer programme uses when a member asks for, or is granted, a cabin above the one booked — among them certificates, vouchers, miles, cash co-pays and complimentary benefits attached to elite status. In United Airlines' MileagePlus programme, for example, the rules refer separately to certificates, co-pays and seat upgrades, so the mechanism a member uses carries its own conditions. [6]

Key takeaways
- An upgrade instrument is the thing spent or the rule invoked to move cabins; the seat is the result, and the instrument is what decides eligibility, cost and conditions. [6]
- One programme can run several instruments at once. United's MileagePlus rules reserve the right to change the mileage required, the cash required, the applicable co-pays or the number of certificates required for any award. [6]
- Instruments can carry their own charges: award tickets, awards, certificates and seat upgrades may be subject to departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other fees, and the person using them pays. [6]
- An upgrade does not raise mileage earning in MileagePlus: class-of-service bonus miles are credited by the fare paid rather than the cabin flown, and are not credited on any upgrade. [6]
How does an upgrade instrument differ from the upgrade itself?
The distinction is between the outcome and the means. The upgrade is a seat in a higher cabin; the instrument is the permission, currency or entitlement that gets the member there, and it is the instrument that carries the fine print about who qualifies, what has to be paid, and when the request can be made. Two travellers can end up in the same cabin on the same flight while using different instruments and meeting different conditions.
In MileagePlus, certificates and co-pays are handled as distinct quantities rather than one generic upgrade price: United states that it may increase the mileage, cash required, applicable co-pays or number of certificates required for any award. [6] Status-based complimentary upgrades work differently again, because entitlement is measured against the membership tier held at the time the member flies, not the tier held when the ticket was bought, booked or reserved. [6]
Using miles as the instrument usually also brings a membership condition. Qantas says a traveller must be a Qantas Frequent Flyer to earn and use Qantas Points, and that a joining fee may apply. [3] Qantas also offers calculators for working out how many Qantas Points are needed to book a Classic Flight Reward or to upgrade a flight. [3]
Which upgrade instruments does a programme use?
Four broad groupings cover most of what members encounter. Each sits inside its own programme's rules, so the conditions attached to one instrument say nothing about the conditions attached to another, even inside the same programme.
Certificates and co-pays
A certificate is a finite entitlement the member holds, which is why MileagePlus rules speak of the number of certificates an award may require and reserve the right to change that number. [6] A co-pay is a cash amount charged alongside a redemption, and United's 2026 Premier Status Match Challenge treats PQP earned from MileagePlus Upgrade Award co-pays as counting towards that offer. [7]
Miles
Points or miles can themselves be the instrument: Qantas Points may be used to upgrade a flight, and its upgrade calculator is built around that use. [3] Because the balance has to be there at the right moment and under the right membership, the miles instrument sits inside both the earning rules and the redemption rules of its programme. [3]
Cash and paid upgrades
Some upgrades are simply bought. United's 2026 Status Match Challenge counts PQP earned from paid upgrades towards the offer's PQP requirement, alongside PQP from Economy Plus seating and preferred seat purchases. [7] The spending is treated as qualifying activity rather than as a redemption. [7]
Complimentary priority tied to status
The complimentary route is an entitlement that arrives with elite status: United lists upgrade benefits among the benefits associated with Premier status, and fixes them to the status held at the time of travel. [6] Membership balances are tracked separately — mileage, certificate and PlusPoints balances are each named as things a member should check and correct — and the 2026 Status Match Challenge credits 20 PlusPoints to members who qualify for Premier Platinum and 100 to those who reach Premier 1K, within 7–10 business days. [6] [7]
| Activity | Counts towards the offer's PQP requirement |
|---|---|
| MileagePlus Upgrade Award co-pays | Yes [7] |
| Paid upgrades | Yes [7] |
| Economy Plus seating and preferred seat purchases | Yes [7] |
| Economy Plus subscriptions | No [7] |
| PQP converted from other currencies | No [7] |
Members can apply for that offer between 8 January and 21 December 2026, and Basic Economy and base fare tickets earn PQP but not PQF under it. [7]
What exceptions and limits apply?
- Some fares cannot be upgraded at all. United states that upgrades will not be allowed on some fares or tickets, including special promotional accommodations, rentals, industry discounts, consolidation tickets, group rates and special promotional rates such as PassPlus. [6]
- Taxes and charges follow the instrument. Award tickets, awards, certificates and seat upgrades may attract departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other charges, and the person using the award, certificate or seat upgrade is responsible for paying them. [6]
- Instruments are not personal property that can be traded. MileagePlus certificates, awards, benefits and status are not transferable except as United expressly permits, and selling, bartering or otherwise transferring them is prohibited. [6]
- Status-matched complimentary benefits are narrower. During the 120-day Challenge Period that follows an activating flight in the 2026 Status Match Challenge, members may not have access to all reciprocal Premier benefits with United's partners, including Star Alliance lounges. [7]
- Earning is unaffected by the cabin. Class-of-service bonus miles and Premier Qualifying Credits are credited according to the fare paid, not the cabin flown, and are not credited on any upgrade. [6]
Frequently asked questions
What does upgrade instrument mean?
It is a collective label for the ways a programme lets a member reach a higher cabin — a certificate, a voucher, miles, a co-pay, a paid upgrade or a complimentary entitlement attached to elite status. United's MileagePlus rules refer to certificates, co-pays and seat upgrades separately, each with its own conditions. [6]
Do you earn more miles when you fly in an upgraded cabin?
Not in MileagePlus: class-of-service bonus miles and Premier Qualifying Credits follow the fare paid rather than the cabin flown, and none are credited on any upgrade. [6]
Do upgrade co-pays count towards elite qualification?
Inside United's 2026 Premier Status Match Challenge they do: PQP earned from MileagePlus Upgrade Award co-pays and from paid upgrades count towards the offer's PQP requirement. [7]
Can an upgrade certificate be sold or given away?
United prohibits the sale, barter or other transfer of mileage, certificates, PlusPoints, awards, benefits or status except as it authorises or sponsors. [6]
Who pays the taxes on an upgraded ticket?
The person using the award, certificate or seat upgrade is responsible for any departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other charges that apply. [6]
