How to book a last-minute award flight

A last-minute award flight is a seat booked with miles close to departure. On United Airlines MileagePlus, the number of award seats, the mileage price and the blackout dates are all set by the programme and can be limited or withdrawn at any time, so close-in space is never guaranteed. [7]

Key takeaways

  • United Airlines MileagePlus can withdraw, limit or reprice an award, cap the number of award seats to any destination and add blackout dates at any time, with or without notice. [7]
  • An award ticket can carry departure taxes, inspection fees and passenger facility charges, and the person flying is responsible for paying them. [7]
  • American Airlines AAdvantage lets eligible members combine cash and miles at checkout on a cash booking made on aa.com or the American app, a feature it announced on 2 October 2026. [4]

Why is close-in award space hard to count on?

United's MileagePlus rules give the programme wide discretion over award seats. United may withdraw, limit, modify or cancel any award, increase the miles or cash required, add an unlimited number of blackout dates, and limit the number of award seats available to any or all destinations. [7] The same rules state that members may not rely on the continued availability of an award or an award level, and that they may not be able to obtain every award offered or use awards to all destinations or on all flights. [7]

Redemption sits inside that discretion: United establishes the amount, structure, availability, process and other criteria for award redemption, all of it subject to modification, cancellation or limitation with or without notice, and the mileage required for an award may be substantially increased or decreased. [7] In practical terms, what a search shows a few days before departure is what is on offer at that moment, and the rules keep that offer open to change. [7]

United may also prohibit award redemption for any member at its discretion, or where the law or other circumstances require it. [7]

What charges can come with an award ticket?

An award ticket is not automatically a tax-free ticket. United's rules say award tickets, awards, certificates and seat upgrades may be subject to departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other fees, charges or taxes, with the person using the award responsible for paying them. [7] An award ticket may also be subject to the taxes, fees, tariffs, contract of carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the airline operating the flight. [7]

Charges named in United's MileagePlus rules
ChargeWhat the rules say
Departure taxes and federal inspection feesAward tickets and awards may be subject to them; the traveller pays [7]
Passenger facility chargesMay apply to an award ticket [7]
Service charge for a change or cancellationMay be imposed for each change or cancellation requested after an award ticket is issued [7]
Redeposit service chargeMiles returned after a cancellation are redeposited subject to a service charge, and some awards are not eligible for redeposit [7]

Those change and cancellation charges sit outside the award price itself and are assessed per request, so a short-notice booking that has to be moved once is not priced the same as one that is moved twice. [7]

Award, cash or a connection: how do you choose?

The comparison starts with the full award cost: the miles United charges at the time you book, plus the taxes and fees attached to the ticket. [7] Because the mileage required can go up or down, quote the award and the cash fare at the same moment rather than relying on a figure remembered from earlier in the week. [7]

American Airlines adds a middle option for its own bookings. As announced on 2 October 2026, eligible AAdvantage members can combine cash and miles when booking flights on aa.com and American's digital app, as the feature rolls out in the coming weeks. [4] The member selects flights at their cash price, is shown an optional trip insurance offer at checkout, then sees the available cash-and-miles combinations, chooses a split with a slider, and the cost summary updates before payment details are entered. [4]

Connections carry their own conditions on an award. United's rules say awards for travel are valid only to destinations served both when the award ticket is issued and at the time of departure, and that neither United nor its partners are liable for schedule changes that result in cancellation of service to a destination. [7] Where an itinerary uses partner airlines, routing and destinations for award travel are determined by the individual travel partners. [7]

Finally, an award does not build your balance back up: under United's rules, award miles and Premier Qualifying Credits are not credited for award travel, including tickets purchased using a combination of miles and money. [7]

Exceptions and limits

  • Mileage redemption activity, including the processing of redemption requests for awards, may be prohibited in any MileagePlus account or suspended for a period after the account is opened. [7]
  • United disclaims liability for a partner's withdrawal from the programme and for cancellations of awards caused by it. [7]
  • If a member does not comply with the published award rules for air travel, United may accommodate them on a different flight, seat them in a lower class of service, deny ticketing or boarding, and the member is not entitled to compensation for that action. [7]
  • Premier status benefits are based on a member's tier at the time of travel, not at the time the ticket was purchased. [7]
  • Some awards state that they are not eligible for redeposit of miles at all. [7]
  • American's cash-and-miles option was announced on 2 October 2026 for eligible AAdvantage members, on aa.com and the American app only, and was described as rolling out in the coming weeks. [4]
