GUIDE
Start here: your first business-class award, step by step
A first business-class award is a seat in the business cabin bought with miles rather than cash, priced by the programme that sells it. [2] [4] The booking follows the same path as any award ticket: check your balance, find a seat released for award use, read the miles-plus-cash price, then ticket it. [1] [5] This guide uses the published pages of five programmes — AAdvantage, The British Airways Club (Avios Reward Flights), Flying Blue, Emirates Skywards and KrisFlyer — whose cabin availability, surcharges and routing rules differ. [2] [3] [4] [5]

Key takeaways
- A business award is always miles plus cash, but the cash covers different things: British Airways prices its own Reward Flights with a fixed cash amount inclusive of taxes, fees and carrier charges, while Flying Blue, Emirates and KrisFlyer each say taxes and charges are paid separately. [2] [3] [4] [5]
- Availability rules differ more than prices: British Airways guarantees a minimum number of business reward seats on its own flights to and from Heathrow and Gatwick, KrisFlyer sells Saver and Advantage seats from allocated inventory and adds Access seats over and above that inventory, and Emirates sells Classic Rewards in any class. [2] [4] [5]
- Read the change terms before you ticket: AAdvantage says award tickets carry no change fees, while British Airways and KrisFlyer charge service fees for many changes and cancellations. [1] [2] [5]
Before you search
Start with the balance and the top-up rules, because each programme limits how a shortfall can be closed. Flying Blue lets you pay up to 25% of a reward ticket with cash, but Miles cannot pay the taxes and carrier charges, which are paid separately at the time of booking. [3] KrisFlyer lets you buy miles during an online redemption if you already hold at least half the miles required, at US$0.04 per mile, and that payment is not refundable. [5] Emirates' Cash+Miles accepts any combination of cash and Skywards Miles and takes the amount off the fare immediately. [4] British Airways offers Avios & Money payment options at checkout where available, and points members to buying Avios, receiving them from friends or family, or pooling them with a household. [2]
Two access gates are worth checking first. Newly enrolled KrisFlyer members need a minimum number of miles in the account before they can search for redemption flights, and the programme does not disclose that figure. [5] Emirates requires Skywards Miles to be redeemed before they expire, although the reward ticket itself can be valid for up to 12 months, and miles due to expire within three months can be extended for a fee by another 12 months. [4] Expired AAdvantage miles can be reactivated for a fee within 24 months of expiry, up to 500,000 miles, but reactivated miles are credited as a bonus and do not count toward status qualification. [1]
Finding a business seat
Guaranteed seats. British Airways guarantees a minimum number of reward seats on its own flights: at least four in business (Club Europe and Club World) on flights to and from London Heathrow and London Gatwick, and two business seats (Club Europe) on flights to and from London City. [2] Reward Flights can also be booked with Iberia, American Airlines and oneworld partners, where the cash amount covering taxes, fees and carrier charges is variable rather than fixed. [2]
Allocated inventory. KrisFlyer prices Saver and Advantage awards from a fixed award chart out of allocated inventory, with a waitlist option, while Access redemption depends on seat availability at the time of booking, confirms immediately without a waitlist and draws on seats over and above those available for award flights. [5] Access is sold only on flights operated by Singapore Airlines, not on Scoot flights or on Singapore Airlines codeshare flights operated on another airline's aircraft. [5] Waitlists are not offered for Star Alliance redemption bookings or upgrades. [5]
Searching partners. AAdvantage award results on aa.com and the American app include partner airline flights, filterable by airline on the 'Choose flights' screen. [1] British Airways shows its own availability first, then partner availability. [2] Emirates' Classic Rewards cover any Emirates or flydubai destination in any class, with a choice of Saver and Flex Plus fares. [4] Avios-only flights are available in any cabin depending on the aircraft configuration, but those seats are sold first-come, first served while they last. [2]
Reading the miles-plus-cash price
Fixed cash. A British Airways Reward Flight costs an Avios amount plus a fixed cash amount covering taxes, fees and carrier charges; the price depends on date, destination and class, and the date decides whether the Avios amount is peak or off-peak. [2] British Airways gives a business example of a Club World seat from 154,000 Avios + £350 return, with all examples correct as of May 2026. [2] Avios needed for partner flights may vary from British Airways prices by route and distance, and bookings with two or more oneworld partners are priced on a separate chart. [2]
Cash on top. Flying Blue Miles cannot pay taxes and carrier charges, which are paid separately at booking. [3] Emirates Classic Rewards pay the full cost of the ticket with Miles excluding taxes, starting from 5,000 Miles. [4] KrisFlyer adds taxes, charges and fees to the redemption mileage, paid separately in the applicable currency. [5] Saver and Advantage awards need fixed miles based on the award chart, while Access miles depend on seat availability when you book. [5] With a complimentary stopover, KrisFlyer charges the lower of the sum of the sectors or the whole-itinerary price: its example shows Singapore–Frankfurt at 44,000 miles and Frankfurt–New York at 27,500 miles, but Singapore–New York is charged at 46,000 rather than 71,500. [5]
Booking and after
Where to book. KrisFlyer award and redemption tickets are booked on singaporeair.com or the SingaporeAir mobile app. [5] AAdvantage award travel is booked on aa.com or the American app, and American warns not to tick 'Redeem miles' unless the whole trip is to be paid with miles. [1] Emirates advises logging in before searching to see exclusive Cash+Miles rates. [4] British Airways asks members to call its contact centre to book with a specific partner, and to call rather than use Manage My Booking for changes involving a voucher, a connecting flight or an Avios-paid upgrade. [2]
Passenger names. KrisFlyer members can nominate up to five individuals to receive redemptions, and no booking can be made for a flight departing within 72 hours of a nominee being added or replaced; once added, a nominee cannot be changed for six months. [5] The cardholder paying the taxes and charges does not have to be travelling. [5]
Changing or cancelling. AAdvantage award tickets carry no change fees, though any difference may be payable, and miles are reinstated to the original account with up to 72 hours allowed for processing. [1] Cancelling before the first flight and within one year of purchase reinstates miles and refunds eligible taxes and fees at no charge, except sale-imposed nonrefundable taxes, taxes the airline must pay whether or not you travel, and trips already started. [1] KrisFlyer allows date, time and route changes online, with cancellation at USD 75 for Saver and USD 50 for Advantage and Access, date changes at USD 25 for Saver and free for Advantage and Access, and route, cabin or award-type changes at USD 25, for flights operated and marketed by Singapore Airlines. [5] Extra miles are charged if a changed itinerary needs more, and any excess is not refunded. [5] British Airways allows most Reward Flights to be cancelled or changed subject to availability for a small service fee, and cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before the first flight to qualify for a refund. [2]
Exceptions and limits
- Programme scope. Each rule above applies only to the programme named; a business award that works one way on one programme cannot be assumed to work the same way on another. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
- Guarantees are route-specific. The British Airways guarantee is stated for its own flights to and from Heathrow and Gatwick, and for London City; partner bookings are described separately, with a variable cash amount. [2]
- KrisFlyer cabin limits. Access tickets cannot be used for upgrades, and members can only upgrade with miles to a Saver or Advantage upgrade award. [5] Suites and First Class are available only on selected Singapore Airlines flights, and where those cabins are not fitted, business seats are allocated to members who redeem for them. [5]
- Emirates upgrades. Reward Upgrades move Economy to Premium Economy or Business, Premium Economy to Business, or Business to First, from 7,020 Skywards Miles; Special fares are not eligible, and Saver fares can only be upgraded at online check-in between 48 and 6 hours before departure. [4]
- AAdvantage cash and miles. Paying part cash and part miles is limited to flights marketed and operated by American within the contiguous 48 states, requires a valid U.S. home address and at least 500 miles, and is not available for Basic Economy, Alaska or Hawaii, international flights, multi-city bookings, trips including another airline, or reservations with different cabins. [1]
- Mixed cabins. British Airways allows cabins to be combined in one booking, for example economy outbound and business inbound, depending on availability, but an Avios-only flight cannot be combined with a commercial flight on the same booking. [2]
- Not covered.
