How to use New York JFK airport lounges

New York JFK airport lounges are the airline and alliance lounges used by eligible passengers departing from John F. Kennedy International Airport, and admission is decided by published cabin, tier status and route rules rather than by the airport itself. [4] For the oneworld alliance, Emerald and Sapphire members can use member airline lounges at JFK when departing on any flight marketed and operated by a oneworld carrier, whatever cabin they fly. Key takeaways

  • oneworld applies one lounge access policy across its member airlines, and at JFK it decides which alliance frequent flyers and premium cabin passengers can enter member lounges. [4]
  • Emerald tier status opens First Class, Business Class and frequent flyer lounges; Sapphire status opens Business Class and frequent flyer lounges. [4]
  • The flight must be both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline, and access is granted on the day of departure. [4]
  • American Airlines adds route restrictions for AAdvantage members, with a published carve-out for First and Business Class on the JFK–LAX and JFK–SFO transcontinental routes. [4]
  • The Chelsea lounge at JFK Terminal 8 is not part of the oneworld access policy. [4]

Who can use a oneworld lounge at JFK?

The policy starts with the ticket: the traveller must be departing on a flight that is both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline, so both the marketing carrier and the operating carrier have to belong to the alliance. [4] Eligible customers may also use a third-party lounge where the airline they are flying with has contracted one. [4]

By tier status. Members of a oneworld airline frequent flyer programme holding the equivalent of Emerald or Sapphire status can use member airline lounges when departing on any flight marketed and operated by a oneworld carrier, regardless of the cabin they booked, subject to the exceptions below. [4] Emerald members may use First Class, Business Class or frequent flyer lounges; Sapphire members are welcome in Business Class or frequent flyer lounges, and that Sapphire entitlement does not extend to Qantas Domestic Business Lounges. [4] Each eligible member may invite one guest, and the guest must also be travelling on a flight operated and marketed by a oneworld carrier. [4] Travellers should be ready to show a boarding pass and a membership card carrying Emerald or Sapphire status. [4]

By cabin. A passenger flying First or Business Class with any oneworld member airline can use the equivalent class of lounge without holding alliance status. [4] Where no First Class lounge is available, a First Class passenger may use a Business Class or frequent flyer lounge instead, and may invite one guest travelling on a oneworld flight. [4]

By timing. Access applies on the day of travel, or before 06:00 the following day, at the airport from which the eligible oneworld flight departs. [4] On a connection, First and Business Class passengers connecting the same day, or before 06:00 the next day, can use the lounge when moving between an international long haul flight and an international short haul or domestic flight in either direction; oneworld treats an international flight scheduled for more than five hours as long haul. [4] Access in that case is decided by the long haul ticket, whatever class is booked on the connecting sector. [4]

What are American Airlines' lounge rules at JFK?

American Airlines applies route restrictions on top of the alliance policy. AAdvantage members, regardless of tier status or class of travel, are not eligible for oneworld member airline lounge access when travelling solely on North American flights between the United States, Canada, Mexico (except Mexico City), the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Caribbean. [4] The same members are not eligible when travelling solely on domestic U.S. flights, with some exceptions. [4] Premium customers without Emerald or Sapphire status face a similar exclusion on domestic U.S. flights, between the U.S. and the Caribbean, between the U.S. and Mexico (except Mexico City), and to or from Canada. [4]

The published carve-out is specific to JFK: First or Business Class passengers on the select non-stop domestic transcontinental flights JFK–LAX and JFK–SFO, in both directions, are eligible for lounge access. [4] oneworld also lists a limited-time offer, effective 1 April 2021, under which American Airlines First and Business Class customers, as well as AAdvantage Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro and Platinum members, are eligible for Admirals Club access when travelling on an American-operated international flight. [4]

Paid lounge programmes run by Alaska Airlines, American Airlines and Qantas sit outside the oneworld agreement, and members of those programmes are not entitled to lounge access under it. [4]

Which JFK lounges are outside the oneworld policy?

oneworld names the Chelsea lounge — American Airlines' and British Airways' lounge at JFK Terminal 8 — as excluded from the oneworld lounge access policy. [4] British Airways' Concorde lounges are excluded as well, along with arrivals lounges, spa facilities and pre-flight dining. [4] Hawaiian Airlines Premier Clubs are also outside the policy. [4] Access to lounges that are included can still be restricted when a lounge is busy at peak times. [4]

Exceptions and limits at JFK lounges

  • Children. Infants under two travelling with an eligible adult are not counted as a guest; an unaccompanied minor aged two to eleven who is eligible must be accompanied by an adult, who counts as their guest; a young passenger aged twelve to seventeen who is eligible does not need an accompanying adult unless local law requires one. [4]
  • Alcohol and age. Local liquor laws may restrict entry for younger travellers where lounges offer self-service alcohol; oneworld gives Japan's restricted ages as 12 to 19 and notes that in the U.S. the age may be up to 21. [4]
  • Fare types. Qatar Airways "Business Lite" fares and Finnair "Business Light" fares are not eligible for lounge access. [4]
  • Alaska and Hawaiian status. Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian Airlines Atmos Rewards members are not eligible for oneworld member airline lounges when travelling solely within and between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. [4]
  • House rules. The lounge operator may refuse entry for statutory, regulatory or airport policy reasons, including health and safety and fire regulations, and may remove anyone whose behaviour or dress it considers unsuitable; food and drink must not be taken out, smoking is banned, and the operator has no duty to make flight announcements or to look after personal belongings.
