American Airlines AAdvantage launches cash and miles bookings, rolling out on aa.com and the app over the coming weeks
American Airlines announced on 10/2 that eligible AAdvantage members will be able to combine cash and miles when booking flights on aa.com and the American Airlines app. The feature rolls out over the coming weeks; no fixed date was given.

What changed
The new feature lets members pay with a mix of cash and miles on aa.com and the app:

To book: sign in to your AAdvantage account and choose flights at the cash price; at checkout, first choose whether to add trip insurance, then the available cash and miles options appear. Use the slider to pick the mix, the cost summary updates automatically, then pay to complete the booking.
The same release also mentions: members who reach 15,000 Loyalty Points in the membership year can choose two inflight food and beverage coupons as a reward; the 15,000 Loyalty Points level offers a 12-month New York Times Games, Cooking or The Athletic subscription, and the 175,000, 250,000, 400,000, 550,000 and 750,000 Loyalty Points levels offer a 12-month All Access subscription.
Who is affected
AAdvantage members without enough miles for a whole award ticket, or who only want to use part of their miles.
What to do
- Sign in to your AAdvantage account before booking.
- Look for the cash and miles option at checkout; it is rolling out in stages, so not seeing it yet is normal.
- When adjusting the slider, compare with the cash-only price and work out what each mile is actually worth before you decide.
